Just been having a look at the "creepy" thread here and it got me thinking, it's pretty obvious that only certain species can have offspring together, but what about sex...how is FemShep supposed to even kiss Big G: I mean have you seen his teeth?

On a more serious note, is it just me or would a non-physical deep LI with an alien present a greater challenge for players in terms of nurturing that relationship to emotional fulfillment; and the scenes where they have to face up to what it is they are going to have to sacrifice to make a relationship work?  Give the writing and VA they could have been truly heart wrenching for Garrus lovers.

For me personally that would have presented a truly satisfying emotional outcome, rather than the few paragon conversations then it just goes along tickety boo....ish.

It is at this point someone will post "C'mon what do you really care...I know you're addicted to blueberry legover pie" you loon  :D

About Garrus romance :D

Spoiler

I still don't like the inclusion of alien sex in Mass Effect. And if Asari at least have some lore excuse, adding Turian, Drell and Quarian romances was a mistake IMO. Still, I acknowledge that they are written and voiced very well. Garrus romance, in particular. But sex scenes were not needed. Look at Samara's romance arc, including Citadel DLC. There is no need to add a sex scene to make romance arc engaging and rewarding.

I, personally, would prefer it in terms of Quarian lore if there was no sexual encounter with Tali, and it was just a deep LI. To me, it would seem a lot more realistic and a lot better. But, y'know, I don't generally ask how they're supposed to do anything in terms of alien LI's. Would be more creepy than any Reaper. :)

Quarian Master Race, that is without doubt the funniest post I've seen since I joined BSN, and there have been some blindingly funny posts and exchanges.  Thank you for making me spit out half a glass of wine in fits of laughter

Genius, pure genius.

I never understood the Garrus relationship myself. I think most people like it on a personality level. So it still works. The devs scratched their heads at first themselves and didn't think anyone would be into him or Tali in ME1.

But I think now, they realize that many fans would even romance a Nug if they could. :\

I've never romanced Garrus. The only romance which felt genuine to me is the one with Tali, and even then I disapprove of the sex.

I liked Garrus romance a lot because he is a great character. He supports you and your actions and he is there when you need him and he doesn't judge you of your actions. He has also a sexy voice :D The romance itself was also very funny which I liked a lot. I also liked Thane romance a lot. He was also there for you and gave you a nickname and he has a  sexy voice too :D I think both Garrus and Thane are both confident outside the romance but it was nice to see how romancing them affected their character and how they weren't that confident anymore :D

I think alien LIs  have been very similar to humans not physically but the way they think so they don't feel that alien. Maybe some people see a predator in Garrus but if you don't think about his looks then he could be like any human being. Same goes for other alien LIs.

I think that last bit, seems to hit it right on the nose. Aliens in the mass effect universe, aren't really that alien. They, on average, care for eachother, for their young, like pleasing vistas on the citadel, watch news, buy presents to eachother, read books and poetry and what not...

It's not that alien and it's not unreasonably that people, in this scenario, would like eachother, across races.

Sacrifices? Well, every relationship have sacrifices and compromises, some you can live with and are more than made up for... Others are dealbreakers...

Love makes you high as a kite... ;)

Garrus should never have been made a LI.

Turians shouldn't even find humans attractive, for starters. I will give the writers credit for kind of alluding to that in ME2 though. Garrus has that whole, "Well this is kinda weird..." dialogue before hand.

But still...Turians look like dinosaurs and they have mandibles, claws, and a metallic carapace. There is not enough brain bleach in this world. Bioware shouldn't have caved to the people demanding Garrus be made a LI. They should limit the romance options to characters that are either human or very humanoid.

I'm not sure I call it a mistake. I usually have the same reaction  as James regarding the Femshep and Garrus sex scenes: "I don't really wanna know" but of all romances I've seen, Garrus/Femshep seems like match made in heaven. Particulary if you are going with a renegade femshep.

But otherwise I agree. The asari had a well built lore excuse but then suddenly every alien was sexually compatible with humans.

It's interesting that you talk about sacrifices because I have never thought that Shepard and his/her LI has to make sacrifices even if the other one is alien. I always think that their love is what matters and the obstacles what comes when the other one is alien is just an obstacle which you can cross.

I can almost imagine Bioware deciding to create an Asari character that is a LI, and then working both to give a lore justification for why that is possible, and to ensure that the character is sufficiently human-like...only to have ME1 release and have someone post on the forums, "Dat Quad: Wrex for companion and LI support thread."

Bioware checking the forums after ME1:

Why Turians shouldn't find humans attractive? I don't see it that it is any different than Asari who find humans or any other species attractive. Why do you want to limit options? I believe Garrus is quite popular LI. More popular that Jakob and he was human.

Not really. Shepard can get allergic reaction from Garrus and rash and hallucinations from Thane unless they use precautions.

I don't think it's a big deal that Garrus was made an LI.
As for "Turians shouldn't be attracted to humans". Irrationality. If you fall for something you fall for something. It's like that in real life, why shouldn't it be like that in a game? You can't control some of the emotions you are developing.

I understand liking the character. And to have fun with the idea.

But relationships aren't just emotional. There's an issue of practicality too. And the Turians weren't designed with any of this in mind. Even Casey Hudson was surprised that people wanted to romance him. He called him a "bird like guy with an exo skeleton" and scratched his head about it at first. But then he gave in... if that's what fans want. It has nothing to do with portraying realistic relationships. It's just there to make some players happy.

Why Turians shouldn't find humans attractive?

Because to them we'd look like hairless apes.

Just as they look dinosaurian to us.

Both species would be biologically programmed to find certain features attractive that the other doesn't possess. Turianmance is kind of weird. They are covered in metallic plating for one.

Well I can probably just argue that if people like him that much it's probably for his character, and then it doesn't matter what he looks like, or which problems arise. They can be dealt with, or not, and they break up.

Who are we to question people's tendencies to what they're attracted? To each their own I'd say. I mean some people sniff other people's underwear or lick feet...

I'd take romancing Garrus over that in a heartbeat

And of course it's not a realistic relationship, but we do not play videogames for realism, I'd guess? It's a fantasy, so I don't see the problem with giving in to making that fantasy possible, even if it was not planned beforehand.

It doesn't have to be just emotional. I believe Shepard and Garrus can make it work. It's propably quite different than with a human but still possible.

People have different tastes so it's possible that some turians could find humans attractive just like some humans could find turians attractive. Anyway the romance with Garrus isn't about the looks. It's about developing a deep emotional connection first and then falling in love with that person despite the different looks.

Well, I presume even horribly scarred people fall in love and not to mention handicapped people.... And there presumably a few out there that like ie. goats waaay too much. Not to mention the really weird ones (to me) that get them realistic dolls, get married to the eiffeltower and other buildings.

But yeah... I get your point. I think... It's probably rarer than it seems in the ME universe. It happens where the races are thoroughly mixed, like the citadel.

One species anonymous farm or mining planet 168... There it probably doesn't happen much.

PS: Or those people marrying serial killers in prison?

Heh, well it's not a relationship simulator *lol*. We don't really know that much about the characters. Hobbies, interests and so on... or just compatibility in lifegoals. Just as an example, you can roleplay shep as someone who really wants kids of his/her own, or as a shep that doesn't want kids... :)

Alot of that is what we, as the players, assign to the different characters.

I think that, if the compatibility is right and the love is most definately there, you can overcome many things, but that possibly some things are too inherently important to us, for us to give up. Stuff like children, career (possibly a problem if both parties throw themselves into it and cannot settle for less time together then) or just being treated with a modicum of respect (he's fun, but he allways makes jokes at my expense or it's great sex, but she throws plates at my head).

I usually play the romances in a way that the LI is the one for my PC. That's why I don't think about how they couldn't be compatible but instead of how they can be compatible. My Shepard loves Garrus and I haven't seen any evidence that Garrus wouldn't feel the same way about her. On the contrary.

I understand your examples and that love can't solve all the problems or issues in real life but when I play games I want to experience the love of the lifetime romance where the couple will be together forever or you as a player can achieve that if you want to and I think it's important to give that possibility to players.

You're just bullsh***in TBH. And so was that writer! He's the one who wrote the turian at the bachelor party saying he was attracted to asari, and the one who wrote a quarian and turian romance. So to take issue with femShep and Garrus seems like he just wanted to spite the female fans that wanted Garrus. Maybe he can't think outside the box.

Here is a female turian. She is over 6ft tall, has no boobs, no ass,a huge barrel shell for a chest, bug-like, wiry, muscled legs, two-toed big digitigrade feet, huge muscled arms, no hair, bald, fringeless scalp, exoskeletal plating, and a narrow waist and narrow hips. Their bodies look like exclamation points!

mass_effect_3__nyreen_reference__by_troo

Yet, a turian can be attracted to a quarian. A quarian's only common traits are dextro amino acids, yet they have red blood while a turians is blue, so different blood proteins, three fingers and three toes total with two prominent toes. The lower legs are more inverted than turians and don't have a bone spike sticking up out of them, the feet are flat to the ground, they are way shorter, way thinner, have boobs, have jiggly asses, the hips are wider than a turian female, and they have no plating, and lots of hair. They are pear or hartman shaped. Plus they are basically humans. They look less like a turian than a salarian krogan or elcor who also have three fingers.

And then the fu**ng asari are all sought after by turians. But we know how much the asari look so attractive to turians, are totally dextro and not levo, and look absolutely nothing like humans or hairless apes as you put it.
