You already have the 40% bonus regardless of which evolution you take. The actual choice only adds 40% more.

 

Once you've got HVB, shotgun amp, passives, etc. that 40% is more like ~17%, according to narida.  Also, what N7_SP3CTR3 said.

You mean 40%, and it's not multiplicative. So I get 4200 dmg + a lot of survivability instead of 4900 dmg - ~16.6%. I'll take it.

 

If it's a weapon-based class, I take damage. If it's not, I take duration.

Only Shadow falls into the latter category. Briefly considered Huntress, too, but dismissed the idea, it's not worth it. Although Huntress is the weirdest character, so what do I know.

In fact, I never have. Same as I never played an infiltrator without TC, or a Drell without fitness

 

Besides, I'm talking about a no Nova build, here. No fitness is vastly better, but I still prefer to spec out of shockwave, as I have a hard time imagining a situation in which I'd rather use shockwave than BC.

 

definitely no fitness.  Who the hell would spec out of nova?  You don't need fitness on the HV and you get a lot of utility through walls with shockwave.  It also helps to break up the ridiculous amount of repetitiveness of the character.  Give it a shot with lifting shockwave, you won't be disappointed.  Besides you have 2 to choose from 

 

don't forget to spec bonus power on charge.

I hear ya. I usually play off-host and screw up my cooldowns within the first 20 seconds, so I just take the damage instead of hoping my cloak stays on ;-)

Don't know much about this kit except that I just unlocked it, but this kit is so ridiculously crazy, and I so like it!  I also don't follow the 40% vs 80% damage bonus.  Then again, I'm the noob here.

Infiltrators get a 40% damage bonus when you use Tact. Cloak. At rank 4, you can choose another 40% damage boost for a total of 80%, or you can choose to have a longer duration on the cloak

Some people like to take the damage boost for maximum pimp-slapping, others like duration so they can be more sneaky

Infiltrators are ridiculous either way so just choose whichever you like. If you don't feel the need to stay cloaked for very long choose damage, but if you want to have more time in cloak and don't mind a damage decrease choose duration. Neither choice is going to break the character.
