If anything is cool and trendy right now, it's hating on the garbage you hear on pop stations. Don't get me wrong, a good 90% of what you hear IS pretty bad, but there's plenty of good music on the air nowadays as well (and if it's not on the radio, then you can find it on Spotify, YouTube, etc).

And by "modern", I mean "new", as in from 2000 to now.

Anyway, what kind of modern bands or songs are you a fan of? I've been listening to a lot of Nothing More (a San Antonio hard rock/alternative metal band) as of late. Their self-titled 2014 album is really good and definitely worth a listen.

Actually, 2014 wasn't a half bad year for rock music, looking back at it.

I normally can't listen to "songs" though. Songs, as in music with a person singing. I just sort of tune out, I think it's because song lyrics are most of the time just the same old bubblegum pop music about failing or winning at romance. Heard it one too many times some while ago, and now I just zone out but not in a good way more like I get bored or oblivious.

Oooh there's so much good new music I'm hooked on right now. I loooooooove Saltillo. Here's a track off his 2012 album Monocyte

And I know... I know Skinny Puppy are not new by any stretch of the imagination... but they are still releasing awesome new stuff, so I think their new stuff qualifies for the purpose of the thread. So here's a track from their 2011 album Handover

Music is no worse now than it was thirty years ago. It's been 90% soulless since the sixties, when pop music really began to take off. A lot of the fondly remembered musicians from the last few decades are absolutely awful without the rosy tint of nostalguI goggles. Good music is all about knowing where to look, and right now, the indie scene where most of the true artists reside.

Well I work in retail and I work 38 hours a week hearing the bubblegum pop they play every week, so I kind of don't have a choice but to hear music I don't like :(
