dumb question maybe: but is it "rude" to ask if someone is tranquil?

IIRC you're usually asking to confirm what they already brought up.

The Tranquil in DAI seemed a little more... alive than those in DAO. Then there were the ones who supported the rebellion. Maybe the devs are saying that the Tranquil are getting better on their own?

Tranquil are cut off from the Fade, that's how they're made as they are. But in DAI, there's a big gaping hole to the fade right in the sky and at least a dozen smaller ones all over. Those tears are probably enough that tranquil are not fully cut off anymore, maybe they're like 10% more reconnected to the fade than they should be (possibly even more connected than that, like 25%). We know that the fade coming into the real world can make tranquil to be not-so-tranquil, like when Anders let Justice out around Karl. So when the fade is pretty much part of the real world like it is in DAI, a similar but lesser effect to what Karl experienced isn't surprising.

I only just thought of this theory thanks to you bringing that up. It seems like a likely idea, does it not? It adds up.

They definitely were able to clearly state having a preference in DAI. That one in the Redcliffe tavern, says he would like to live rather than die.

It could also be that the Rite is like any other 'treatment'; it has varying levels success depending on the individual, the person administrating the treatment, tools, etc.

I mean, the Rite is merely cutting them off from the fade, right? So it's like seeing bright colors and then having someone put frosted or tinted glass in front of your face. You can still sort of see the colors, but they're dull and you can't make sense of what they belong to.

How effective the glass is would depend on the skill of the person making it, the quality of the materials, etc.

And what about the mage's connection with the fade? Someone with a really strong connection like a somniari may suffer far more from having that connection cut than someone who had the magical potential of a grade schooler.

Tranquil Feynriel apparently was no different than any other type of tranquil.

May be there is a difference between a tranquil who voluntarily agreed to the procedure and one who has it forced on them.    On the whole the ones who seem to ask for it are relieved (if you can call it that) they no longer have to worry about becoming possessed.   Generally they would seem to be those who either had very little magical skill anyway or were scared to death of their power.   The thing is when the rite is performed I'd assume they would be very relaxed about it and may be this impacts on their subsequent demeanour.

Maddox was forcibly made tranquil.    I would imagine this might also leave a mark on his demeanour.   In Asunder it is stated that tranquil do not lack free will; they simply do not generally have the desire to embark on projects without someone pointing them in the right direction.     When the Gallows went into melt down, Cullen admits that the tranquil were largely left to either be killed or fend for themselves.    When Samson helps Maddox, the latter would remember their previous connection.   He would acknowledge that Samson had helped him before, it was not Samson who made him tranquil and Sampson had been punished for his actions.    Logic would dictate that he should now be "loyal" to Samson and in opposition to anyone who is an enemy to Samson because Samson is the only person who has bothered to help him.

I'd be interested to know what tranquil are like in Tevinter that have been altered by the Magisterium for crimes against the state.

Tranquil want to live rather than die, whilst in tranquil state (when restored they would rather die than become tranquil again).   They can feel hunger and cold and recognise the need to remedy these deficiencies.    They can recognise friends as people who are interested in their welfare and foes as people who either do not care or actively try to harm them.     However, since tranquil have always been on the fringe of events or only involved when their tranquillity is reversed, it is difficult to really understand them.    It would be interesting to have a tranquil companion but the writers probably feel that would be too much of a challenge because they haven't really thought through the lore thoroughly enough for it to be consistent.

Sad thing is, you're actually right.

They've been deprived of all emotions. Someone thought it'd be a good idea to strip away most of their humanity.

It is why I do not like them.

They are creepy, and some of them represent the absolute worst aspects of humanity.

They are not creepy in the entertaining kind of way either.

They bring me down, Bruce.

Bah.
One rogue tranquil in what?
Six centuries?
I wish that track record extended to reality for a few things...

I guess you could also say that Pharamond was rogue, in the sense that he caused the deaths of so many people.

No, it's like asking a pregnant women if she's pregnant.
