One small correction though: In HLTA the Inquisitor didn't open up an already-existing-but-dormant Rift. The Inquisitor created a new one as they were falling. If they had fallen through the one Clarel had created, we would've popped up right in the Nightmare's face, before all ten thousand of his eyes. So the Inquisitor is able to open up new rifts, at least from HLTA on out.

The Rift we fell through wasn't created by the Inquisitor, you can see about 1:30 and 1:44 in this clip that there's a huge pre-existing dormant Rift lying within the Abyssal Rift far below Adamant Fortress, the Inquisitor just took advantage of it as they're falling?

It's not related to the rift that Clarel was trying to bring Nightmare, just another one that formed nearby because of the weakened Veil in the area.

Ah, so there is another one. I admit when I first played, due to the extreme lag caused by a crappy framerate that no matter what I do can't be fixed, I couldn't make out a lot of details in the game. I had just assumed it was more sulphur-like crap, or maybe a lot of lyrium (since the Hissing Wastes had green lyrium), then anything else. Certainly not a Rift.

It's the reason I haven't done many replays, only going at it for maybe an hour at a time (wherein I don't get much done). Plus, the dialogue once you reach the Fade never talked about it being a pre-existing Rift, and was in fact ambiguous enough to let people assume we opened our own ("The Inquisitor opened another rift" and "The Inquisitor opened another, pre-existing Rift" have different levels of clarity, y'know?).

or maybe that's just true for me :P

Personally though, I've already gone with "My Cadash has gotten a lot of control of the Rift already" so I'm unsure whether I'm going to use that one in my headcanon, since I've had my Cadash as having opened a new one on his own. Probably because the implications of opening up a huge-ass dormant Rift and leaving it open when we come out are.... not at all addressed in-game. Better a smaller one then one the size of the entire Abyssal Rift.

...especially since couldn't the Nightmare just.... pop on out from the other end?

Yeah, the game really doesn't help make clear how much control we have over the Anchor at any given point, does it? Or how we know we can do certain things at certain times? Kinda wish that we could see an alternate version of the ending where you trid to banish Corypheus into the Fade, only for nothing to happen whatsoever?

Inquisitor: You wanted into the Fade... *Nothing happens*

Corypheus: *Though a broken jaw* Yesh, thetsh why I dibh evpheryphing!

As for that huge open rift, hopefully it snapped shut after we fell through it like the other rifts do, or the Chargers and Inquisition soldiers managed to bury it under rubble when they knocked down Adamant Fortress? Wouldn't be fun to learn that we accidentally gave Nightmare an even larger portal to come through within spitting distance of his lair?

How can you destroy Adamant? I heard it's possible, and my Inquisitor would most likely have done it, but I never saw an option for it.

The Chargers have a war table mission to tear it down.

That's what I suspected, but no such mission ever opened up for me.

Really good theories and plot holes pointed out in this thread :D I liiiike.

I also wonder if we'll start to see any long-term effects of having the Anchor...I really wanted them to study it too. My first time playing (which was very recent; I finished two days ago), I was like, "Wait what, how did Solas know I had to do that? Am I in pain? Wait whoa, this dude just made me bend the knee oooohmygawd, this can get really bad...oh it never got bad...oh okay..."
