Thinking of playing the series, but is it a must to play it in order?. I've read some post that ME2 was the best so maybe I could just start with that? Or ? I already bought the first but haven't really played it beyond cc.

It's a trilogy with a story told in three games, so yeah, it is highly recommended to start with the first if you want to really enjoy and understand it. Plus, there is save game import, so some of your decisions, their consequences and your character face carry over from one game to the next.

I know ME1 is somewhat inferior to ME2 in some terms of gameplay, but it has a far superior story and does its job great in introducing the universe and its story holds key elements in the overall story arc, without them, it's somewhat hard to understand what happens later.

In short: play ME1. You won't regret it.

Thanks guys. I don't actually like shooters but I do like story driven games. Got bored with Inquisition too fast and I need fix from somewhere else. Hopefully the story on this one satisfies.

When you start playing, you can post your playthrough here if you like.

I don't like shooters either. That is why I like Mass Effect (well, at least ME2 and ME3). I almost always go with the mage-like classes like Engineer, Adept and Sentinel, because I stink at shooting. I tend to rely mostly on my powers. For exmaple, you could look at this segment  from ME2 where I don't fire a single shot for the entire first two minutes of the fight. And this is on insanity, the highest difficulty level. Indeed, I understand there is a "no shots fired" playthrough somewhere on youtube where the person didn't use his guns at all.

Now, if you mean by "shooter" something that is strictly about killing bad guys, Mass Effect is not that either. It is very much about characters and story. (ME2 is very much about characters, less about story, ME1 is more about story, and ME3 is equal amounts of story and characters.)

I should have probably read more before I started playing because my game is full of suck atm. If I am a guy I'd miss the toilet completely, I am a really crappy shooter that's why I hate it. I'll scrap this soldier play through and make an Adept. Thanks for all the advice!

There's an aim assist feauture available in the settings even on PC which should make your life easier. Also, try postioning the crosshair on your target while still in cover, then you'll only need to pop out and fire some small bursts while doing only slight adjustments to your aim whenever it is necesarry. When using a fully automatic gun, I'd also recommend the "continous burst fire" tactic by rapidly clicking the left mouse button, thus firing only small bursts, but very quickly with a good overall damage while still maintaining accuracy.

But no worries, you'll get accustomed to ME's shooter mechanics pretty quickly as it is really forgiving on lower difficulties. ME2 and ME3 have a more refined weapon combat, where different guns require different approach as they firing patterns differ, but what I've said about a quick learning curve still stands with these games as well. When I first played ME, I was terrible in shooters, now I won't play anything under the insanity difficulty.

In ME2 and ME3 the Engineer is like an elemental mage with some conjuration thrown in. You got a drone you can conjure, plus the three elementals - fire, ice, electricity.

The Adept is like a force-mage/rift-mage - lots of powers to toss people around and hold them in place.

The Sentinel has a little of both.

In ME1, though, at the start of the game you are going to end up relying on your weapons more because cool down times on powers are atrocious at the start.
