You are correct that that's what this term usually means. But get rich quick scheme or slot machines, I personally want none of it in MP whatsoever. So I don't care if it's a furry monster or one with three heads.
If you're disappointed by the particular extra money mechanic that's fair and just. But to me it's unsettling and slightly obscene to even consider that as a general criteria for good or bad multiplayer. If you're upset the game doesn't support getting the best stuff quickly by throwing extra cash at it, it's not for you. That doesn't mean it's bad though, not by a long shot.
Why is it obscene that I would prefer a system that doesn't nerf the entire loot system to cater for their slot machine money making tactics.
It doesn't matter if people are running around with the best gear because the bought it, because it's co-op.
You're also assuming these people who buy platinum stick around, but they don't, so in no way is this servicing the community... However to let someone get a staff they have been grinding for after 1M gold is spent is.
It's not that the game doesn't support getting the best stuff quickly, it's that the game doesn't support getting anything at all. There will be players who could be buying chests from launch to a year out and never see certain items.
Case and point.
Yeah, but I'm still baffled people never even consider what this game would look like if that weren't exactly so.
You would have to alter the effectivity ratio of items in general from ground up to balance that out. I mean, I'm not even sure how I feel about the game being as gear dependant as it is, but if drops were even increased, why bother at all? I can run around Routine with my base level Hunter whom I gave my best upgrades & trinkets, I can Scarface-tank a busload of archers for ten minutes and get a coffee (and a fresh daring hybole). And no, I don't have an awful lot of promotions.
I don't get people's qualms with the droprate, since a good drop is always a total game changer, and there's only so many of them.
In the perfect world when I killed 5000 Venatori, rather than a useless prestige star, I would get a BiS weapon like "Staff of the Venatori Commander" but instead we have a game that in no way rewards progression instead we grinding gold aimlessly on the same 3 maps over and over again so that I can put it in the Bioware slot machine so I can land some sweet highland dirks.
I know this system is designed so eventually those frustrated with not getting the BiS will cave in and buy some platinum to put in the slot machine, but I'd rather save my money and focus it on complaining about changing it so we actually have a MP co op game to play.
There is a point in this when you don't have anything left to craft, because you crafted it all and yet you still have not decent gear for the classes you want to play.
I'm sure the game would have content coming out faster if they monetized it the right way and would not need to deal with the terrible matchmaking system because things would be getting fixed.
