Was there any particular reason he shouldn't have been there? I think they wrote him in well.

I agree. I don't think Varric's part in the story was badly written at all.

Because the resources could have gone to someone else.

Because he was popular .

But for in story reasons was already there and being brought to tell his story to the divine, and most likely would have been recurited into the inquestion one or another if the divine didn't die anyhow.

Meaning what? Varric was a waste of resources? Somebody else would have fit better in the story? What scenario, exactly, did people have in mind? Can't we just be content with what we have?

Nope.

Varric was a complete bore. All he ever seemed to do was mumble that he doesn't understand what's going on and he has no opinion on things.

Unfortunately, since BioWare decided to stick with requiring a rogue to pick locks, I ended up taking him everywhere anyway since I didn't care for Sera or Cole much either.

Yes. There are literally dozens of other character concepts who could have added more to the story and lore if they were given the resources Varric got.

Remember, Varric is really a popular character outside of these forums. So, most people don't think he was a waste of resources. He won best rogue character in Bioware ultimate companion poll. (I'd wanted Cole to win!!!)

Is there a specific example? I could argue that any and every character could have been scrapped for some other character concept, but that doesn't really mean much, because we're not guaranteed to get something better just because it's new.

I love Varric and he's been a constant companion for me in all my play throughs. Although, in this one when he talks about missing Hawke and you hear the sorrow in his voice, I get jealous. Makes me totally want to find Hawke and rip his heart out! Even though I was Hawke, Varric would hate my Inquisitor, and it just plans sounds crazy. Like stalker crazy. ☺

Believe you me I thought he was a great character. I just can't understand why people would complain about Varric's inclusion unless they didn't like him. Otherwise it makes it seem as if they're whining that some hypothetical character inside their heads should have been included instead of Varric, and that strikes me as ridiculous.

He's also the only character to trend world-wide on twitter when they first started the poll.

Personally, if I had to scrap a character from the inner circle to be replaced by someone else, it would be Leliana.

I'm really not big on twitter, but how many hashtag does it take for something to start trending?

A character who is really tied to one of the conflicts in the game comes to mind, since they would be taking Varric's "mandatory companion" slot so is always able to contribute. Like for example, and even though I would hate the character, an Orlesian Chevalier. They could have come with some noble who went to the talks, since we know there were some, and after the noble was killed tries to help stop the Breach and join the Inquisition. They would be able to give us a lot of information about Orlais and what was happening there, rather than the entire OCW only be a single mission and a loose premise for a map.

Meanwhile Varric doesn't so anything like this. That'd be fine if he was an optional character like the others, but he is a mandatory character. The only other mandatory characters are Cassandra and Solas, and they add a lot more to the game than Varric does.

I liked him. He was both a flamboyant poet and a diminutive badass, cracking wise and kicking butt with Bianca. His dialogue with Cassandra was great, the tension between the two as well as the reluctance to admit that they needed one another in the Inquisition was well written and entertaining. And WHAT a chest. You rule, Varric. Come back next game

Varric adds chest hair that this game is missing.  Even Iron Bull looks like he shaves his chest.

Leliana made sense though since she was the Left Hand of the Divine, and forming the Inquisition was the Divine's directive should the peace talks fail. It's only logical her Right and Left Hands be a part of that.

As someone who had zero interest in DA2, my impression of Varric is solely based on this game. I kind of like him, though I was a bit disappointed that his apparent "gotta help fix the mess I helped cause" motivation is only hinted at instead of being a real character arc. Too much convivial joker and beloved-by-everyone star writer, not enough introspection. In a way, the writers treat him with kid gloves and just gloss over his various failings and misgivings and hurts without losing a step -- even Cole is never allowed a chance to show Varric's deeper feelings. Not even if Hawke dies. As the Inquisition's unofficial "morale officer" who facilitates people bonding and relaxing with each other (see the awesome Wicked Grace scene), he did get in my good books, but I just felt he was a bit shallow on the personal level.

I think Kaiser raises a good point. Arguing that a character should have been replaced with a hypothetically better character is meaningless. Varric is supposed to be the entry point for Hawke, Corypheus and red lyrium and I think he suits that role well. If you didn't like him than I'm sorry but he does contribute much more than Solas does (until the big reveal of course).

Why shouldn't I mean we all knew he was going to play a role in this game in some shape or form after DA2. I mean if you don't want he you could just leave him in the throne room.

Aside from Cassandra and Solas, the other companions weren't essential to the story. So aside from them two, X companion could've easily been replaced by Y character. I wish Y character was introduced instead of them giving us X character.

In mein personal opinion, Varric's not even in the top 3 of 'which companion should've been left out.' He wasn't as interesting as in DA2, but at least he's bearable.
