In DA:O I always go for rogue, if only for being able to lockpick every locked chest and thus gain a lot of extra experience you wouldn't have been able to otherwise. With that said, I'll be the first to say that for someone new to the game, dual-wielding is the way to go. However, once you get the handle of the game, you can also try out some archer on the side. Scattershot + Tier 4 Stealth = Mayhem. Plus, Arrow of Slaying is practically a must when you want to get rid of enemy mages quickly. The disadvantage is that the best archery abilities are at the end, so expect some difficulties during the first few hours of the game (I usually deal with that with adding some dual wielding training and/or dual wielding finesse and kill enemies once they get close enough).

In DAII, the mage abilities are awesome and, like others said, you're able to cast spells a lot faster and thus do a lot of damage. The most fun though would have to be dual-wielding rogues again. As Hawke him/herself puts it: "So much blood!"

In DA:I, I think a very well built-up warrior and/or knight enchanter can own the field. In the first case, you can use chain to drag mages over their traps and KO them, Vanguard passive abilites that can cause even *more* damage to enemies the moment they touch you and even some lunge and slash along with combat roll; they can get you everywhere in the blink of an eye. In the second, you can use fade step to either get close and deal a blow or escape when things get ugly, Spirit blade is brutal when the enemies have Guard up and if you build up your Barrier abilities, you're indestructible.

It's just my opinion though - you could try several options to see what suits your personal style best. :)

I like going mage for all three and make at least one elf. Story reason: I just like the irony (?) of having not one but three times the oppressed and reviled saving Thedas' sorry butts.

Gameplay reason: I just prefer mages, especially in Inquisition, I hate trying to stab a guy and he runs off and I am stuck stabbing air

I didn't plan it this way but I also went mage for all three. When I first saw the opening of origins about how magisters started the blights, I knew I wanted to play a mage. I guess it is a little odd Thedas keeps getting mage heroes. But eh I figure mages cause a lot of things to happen in Thedas, both good and bad, so it's not so strange really. It did make me feel more engaged in the lore since magic seems to be involved in a lot of problems.

But obviously you should play the class you find most fun or what makes you feel more engaged with the story. Some people swear mage Hawke fits the story best for DA2 and some people find it jarring and like rogue or warrior better, so it's a matter of perspective. My Inquisition playthrough was with a female elven mage (with Solas romance), and I enjoyed it a lot.
