You guys are dumb. ME2 is the future. Its the perfect hybrid between RPG and shooter.

What's funny is you are the same type of person who accuses people of being trolls or stating opinion as fact, when you come on here make a comment like that and can't even back it up with contructive, inteligent, critical assertions.  I'd like to see you say something intelligent and back it up.   I dare you actually.  Who's dumb?  Do you even know what dumb means?  Please tell us why Mass Effect is the perfect hybrid between rpg and shooter in your own words.

LOL. I'm pretty sure my IQ, my pedigree are all better than yours. ME 2 is much much better than ME 1, and anyone who says otherwise is delusional or a troll.

Too bad for that supposed pedigree of yours. You are proving it is pretty worthless with that attitude of yours.

Good post and I agree. Playing ME2 just makes me want to go back to ME1. ME2 obviously has mroe polish, looks better and probably had a higher budget but I don't give two sh!ts about those things. Guess I'm part of the dying breed then. I'll play ME2 once. And then sell it. Hope you make a lot of cash Bioware, but you've broken a lot of hearts in the process.

It's like the movie Titanic or Avatar. Are these really the best movies or just the biggest productions. There is something to be said for artistic integrity and individualism and capitalism here. This is what EA does is take a creative company on the verge and capitalizes. But at the same time EA isnt going to put money behind a game unless it targets a certain demographic and is going to make money. You can look at it one of two ways. I appreciate the production values here and a lot of what bioware did they might not have been able to achieve without EA's backing, but in the same regard alot of the artistic integrity and soul is lost. It is concerning to me a bit. IMO they took the rpg genre to the action adventure crowd. It is a blend of hte two. But after a while all these games like Gears, GTAIV, Assassins Creed are all becoming the same. Where's the difference and the creativity? Where's the meat and guts?   They are all ultimately being melded into the same thing.  What is the point of even levelling up in this game when you are just upgrading powers like Batman arkayn asylum? Are you really levelling up or just added powers as you go through the game.

Dude, you are really dumb. You are being contrarian for the sake of being "EDGY AND COOL".

Is your iPod filled with obscure underground bandz that no one has ever heard of?

Sorry dude, some of us don't normally play shooters, so we dont mind the more shooter like direction of ME2. if you are looking for a traditional RPG, there is still Dragon Age.

P.S. Both Titanic and Avatar were great movies. They are not arthouse movies, but they are still good movies. STFU.

Some of you have a bad case of Nostalgia. ME was a great game, but both the inventory system and the character development system were subpar by RPG standards. Getting spammed with a page of useless weapons after a big fight was SOO fun. Having to micromanage the guns for the entire SQUAD was SOO FUN, amirite?

The gaming industry sadly has become just like Hollywood: generic piles of garbage touted as wonders of entertainment. It isn't surprising that I haven't gone to 5 movies in the past 5 years. Hell, I hardly watch TV anymore either because of the formulaic BS. I guess true gaming died with the PS2 and now we are going to be stuck with shooter after shooter after shooter... or "dark" and "edgy" game after "dark" and "edgy" game.

what's amazing is EA keeps becoming bigger and bigger and keep recording record losses every quarter.  And you wonder why we are in a recession and the economy is crap.  There isn't the same diversity.   Maybe someone else has to be in control and these companies are getting way too big for the common good.  Not to get all political but greed is a messed up thing.   I also think there are other things going on in the world we don't know about.  When companies like walmart and EA and Exxon etc are all deciding what i can do with my money and where i can shop.  Some people don't even realize it, they just kind of accept what is handed to them, but if they open up their eyes they might.

Lol, "I'm sticking it to THE MAN, GUIZ." Get over yourself.

Also, if ME2 were more of the same from ME1, all of you people would be saying, "WHY WASN"T THIS A DLC? THERE ISN"T ENOUGH NEW CONTENT."

Actually, if ME 2 were more of the same from ME 1 I'd probably be on my second playthrough instead of posting here : )

I'm pointing out some of the obvious personal characteristics of the whiners in this thread, because none of their actual complaints is really worth addressing, because they are ridiculous.

Actually, most of us would be too busy playing the 89th playthrough since it would obviously hold our interest more than the current game. Despite your proclamations, ME2 is not universally praised or loved as a good sequel.

Absolute BS.  You might personally like the changes, but that doesn't make it fact that it was for the better.  There are too many fans listing the same defects for it to simply be whining.  It is called legitimate criticism... you know, the same thing some did to ME1 which got us into this whole mess.

Please google "ad hominem" and then ponder the implications for yourself.

If you would actually read some of the critical posts in this thread they offer very specific viewpoints that are no less correct than your own.

Once again, stop acting like a child.

Haven't played the game yet but I've read a lot of comments...

Seems like some of you guys act like the Star Trek fans when the new movie was released, the hardcore fans missed the endless, hourlong debates, and the fact that the movie looked and was much better in terms of SGIs, yet most people just felt it was a vast improvement.

Feels like a similar situation with this game, every hardcore fan feels betrayed because it doesn't follow the old pattern, and every critic is pissed because a part of the RPG element has been taken away and replaced to become a TPS-RPG, but it doesn't feel like it's coming from nowhere as ME1 was aspiring towards that road.

The Star Trek comparison is apt... while it is a good moive in itself, it is not a good Star Trek movie. In fact, it had very little of anything related to what Star Trek is other than names.

I played through ME 1 at least a dozen times and enjoyed every minute of it.

ME 2 is the first game I've ever pre-ordered.  It will also be the last.

I'm not saying ME 2 is necessarily a bad game in its own right, but it is missing so much that made the original unique that it seems almost misleading to call it a sequel.

ME2 is so linear it hurts.

Simplify the inventory system? That would have been great.  Completely eliminate loot and inventory?? What??

Reduce the amount of time consumed roaming around secondary planets? Worthy goal.  Eliminate this aspect completely??  What??

ME 1: achievenents unlocked new, interesting options.

ME 2: achievements are pointless.

ME 1: skill tree allowed experimenting with unconventional skillsets.. lots of fun, GREAT replayability.

ME 2: skill planning is brain optional.

ME 1: character development made events feel important, made the scope of the game epic.  I often told friends that one of the best movies I saw in 2008 was actually a video game....

ME 2: I'm finding it hard to care if my team lives or dies...

etc, etc....

There are so many games out there that appeal to the simpler "shooter" mindset.  I've played a number of them and enjoyed them.  ME 1 was unique though.. something really special.  It was actually the only reason I didn't pitch my console completely.  Looks like I'll be able to clear up some space for new AV equipment now.

The game changes will certainly open up the Mass Effect series to a much larger customer base.  Can't fault a business for making a good business decision.  It is sad to realize, however, that games like ME 1 will forever remain vulnerable to their own success.

I am 100% with you Orogenic... For those of us that were enthralled with ME1 ME2 leaves much to be desired. It's a sad day for those of us who replayed the original multiple times, Bioware/EA has to pursue it's business interest true enough, but CRPGs have always been a little outside of mainstream, with shooters being the dominate gaming genre since Wolfenstein3D, and it's a sad thing to see such a unique and wonderful game be followed by such a refocused mass appeal (forgive the pun) product... Bioware has long been a CRPG developer and in this game their leaving part of their roots behind. Sad for us RPGers, good for EA stock holders? Let's hope Bioware never does a sports title. LOL!

I learned about ad hominems as a senior in HS. I'm a grad student now. I dont need to look it up.

There are times that ad hominems are appropriate, especially when the other side's argument is pure whining, and they things like "ZOMG CORPORATES AREE EVIL. I ONLY LIKE THINGS THAT DONT MAKE A PROFIT. THIS GAME IS SOULLESS, BECAUSE IT'S POPULAR, JUST LIKE AVATAR."

Wtf? This comment perfectly exemplifies the lack of thought put into the defense of the video game industry in general. BioWare is a video game developer. They make video games... for entertainment. Entertainment, the opposite of boredom. Please tell me you see where I'm going with this.

I've played a TON of RPGS, tracing back to Fallout1, Baldurs Gate 1, etc. I bought ME because it was an RPG. I still dont care about the things that they dropped. Inventory management SUCKS. The sidequests in ME were like a laundry list of bitmap planets and buildings. ME2 IS SO much better.

Also yes you're right Lycid, we should all just ignore our political convictions and rush blindly into actions to meet the approval of a supposed grad student on a video game website who somehow doesn't understand basic grammar.

(This is a troll post)

This is why the arguments here are not even worth addressing. Some of you are ridiculous. GUESS WHAT? Mass Effect 2 is not the only game Bioware has released in the last half year or so. Guess what the other one was, and if anyone questioned that it was an RPG?

Personally I've known for over a year that I would not like this game. There were many annoying elements of the first, but I found it playable enough in bursts. I saw that there were many changes being made to the sequel and I knew it would scarcely be the same game. When EA bought up BioWare and all the promotional material talked about it being "the much darker, second chapter" for the 500th time I knew that it would be a streamlined cookie cutter game. This is why I didn't buy it. I played friends' copies for a few hours, realized that I was completely correct about the game, then went on the spoiler forums and confirmed the obvious and predictable story.

If you are, in fact, a grad student then act like it.  Respond to the content of the argument instead of resorting to personal attacks.  Quit presenting your opinions as if they are fact.

In short, quit acting like a child.

By the way, I loved Avatar.  It was brilliant and obviously a labor of love for Cameron.  Commercial success is not the issue here.  ME 2 feels "soulless" because there is almost zero continuity from the great character development in the first game and lackluster development  as you play through the second.  There are definitely lots of nice explosions though.
