Actually, in the middle ages armour was vitally important because it could stop weapons easily, and defense was often more powerful than offense (eg why castles were built).  Then, with gunpowder, the balance shifted to offense, which is why armour faded out of use and cover became important, and why most soldiers don't wear full suits of heavy plate.  However, recent technological trends show that defensive tech is not only improving but is actually catching up, with new body armours that are shifting the balance back towards defense, and indications are that we may in fact end up back to the days of defense > offense.  Therefore, in the future it may in fact be possible that we'll have armour that allows us to indeed take tons of bullets before going down.

As for the rest of your post that I haven't quoted, there was no need for your offensive remarks or personal attacks on that person, and it just shows the rest of us what kind of person you really are.

Unfortunately from what I've seen so far, I'm inclined to agree with you Kabraxal.

Edit:
http://www.bravenewg...-mass-effect-2/

This guy actually gave the game a high score in his review.

Personal thoughts:

reload - If you don't like it, then fine. It took me a while to get used to it, that's for sure. Doesn't change the fact that its an accepted staple of shooter games, as it paces the battles better.

'secretary'  - She's just a guide for newbies and a 'sex interest' for the horny. I just think of her as Shepard's friend.

'difficulty' - Change settings. Problem solved.

stand out characters - WHAT? There are tons of stand out characters.. ironically so many that it makes it easy to switch between them ;)

direction - I'm actually quite glad this one is about the exploration, since I bet ME3 is all about the culmination of all the major plot points. Let me put it this way - ME1 is assorted human lands of a little importance, ME2 is the Terminus Systems (both backwater and heavily populated), while ME3 will likely deal with capital planets. The sub-stories in this one work remarkably well.

I just have to ask... do people really think the exploration in this game is better than ME1? Really?

But they are constrained, linear, and rather tedious to even get to in comparison because of the horrid exploration system in this game.

This system made the universe feel so limited and tiny in comparison to the open world feel of ME1. Granted, the MAKO could be frustrating... stupid Caliban.

I love love love the new ME2. Everything feels tighter. Everything is more streamlined. It's like I get to play a gears style game with the ability to choose my own adventure, try out endless different "builds" and play a game where I can't help BUT care about my squad.

The more I play the game, the more I think "This has to be in the top 5 games of all time for me"

It beats ME1. That said, I was never into spending hours trying to figure out how to best allocate my skill points and the frustration when, at the end, I couldn't change whatever I did, even IF I screwed it up.

I LOVE ME1, I really do. I put so many hours into that game, that it's almost embarrassing. I had 2 level 60 characters and at least 1 or 2 (I don't remember exactly now) level 40+ characters.

I can foresee that happening even more easily with ME2.

no Mako, no more cut scenes where characters look off dramatically to the right and then move off screen.

The story is great, the voice acting is even better, and the hot chick from Chuck plays a hot chick in this game.

There's so much win, it doesn't even compute!

Lots of good posts in here, cheers to both sides.

Just a note: not being happy with the changes in ME 2 does not make someone a troll.

Also, those defending the changes do not need to be so childish and personal... if anything that reinforces some of the stereotypes you seem to be arguing against.

Well, my wife sends her thanks.

After days of trying to get into this game I give up. Sure, it is dark, edgy, and slick. It also has no soul, and that is how it differs from ME 1. This was the only game I was keeping the xbox for.. now it can go!

The funniest thing in this forum is reading the posts by people attacking those with complaints about ME 2. They are almost without exception crude, personal, and inappropriate.... in short they sound like most of the feral adolescents that constitute the larger console customer base.

Congrats bioware, you definitely got your larger target demographic. I'm sure you'll get game of the year too.

Before I go... would like to say thanks for Mass Effect 1.. it was truly unique, a great piece of interactive storytelling.

For all of the flames sure to follow: please be as rude, personal, and ignorant as possible... it is funny when you prove my point for me : )

I'm trying not to read too many of the posts concerning ME2 since I'm not planning on playing the game anytime soon. But the more of the little that I DO read seems to suggest that my tardiness is not unwarranted.

I played through ME 1 at least a dozen times and enjoyed every minute of it.

ME 2 is the first game I've ever pre-ordered.  It will also be the last.

I'm not saying ME 2 is necessarily a bad game in its own right, but it is missing so much that made the original unique that it seems almost misleading to call it a sequel.

ME2 is so linear it hurts.

Simplify the inventory system? That would have been great.  Completely eliminate loot and inventory?? What??

Reduce the amount of time consumed roaming around secondary planets? Worthy goal.  Eliminate this aspect completely??  What??

ME 1: achievenents unlocked new, interesting options.

ME 2: achievements are pointless.

ME 1: skill tree allowed experimenting with unconventional skillsets.. lots of fun, GREAT replayability.

ME 2: skill planning is brain optional.

ME 1: character development made events feel important, made the scope of the game epic.  I often told friends that one of the best movies I saw in 2008 was actually a video game....

ME 2: I'm finding it hard to care if my team lives or dies...

etc, etc....

There are so many games out there that appeal to the simpler "shooter" mindset.  I've played a number of them and enjoyed them.  ME 1 was unique though.. something really special.  It was actually the only reason I didn't pitch my console completely.  Looks like I'll be able to clear up some space for new AV equipment now.

The game changes will certainly open up the Mass Effect series to a much larger customer base.  Can't fault a business for making a good business decision.  It is sad to realize, however, that games like ME 1 will forever remain vulnerable to their own success.

nope not even close to being bored :)

I'm bored but that's more likely because I have the game in front of me and cannot play it, tempted to rent it for the 360 for a week or something, I have 1 complete save there anyway.

I keep trying to crouch. I just cant kick the habit.

This game is amazing. How can you be bored with it. And importing your character over just makes it so much better. Its like a movie. My shepard is back and she is better than ever. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about the game.

If scanning didn't play so much into how the story turns out (you need upgrades for a suicide mission) I wouldn't be so let down....But bioware made the mistake of making a huge aspect of the game really really really fricken retarded.

Its as if they held a meeting and went "Ok, we're gonna have a contest to see who can come up with the worst idea imaginable...then we're gonna take the winner and put it into the game to annoy the crap out of everyone."

Even that aside, the side quests are boring. What happened to "The side quests will actually have something to do with the main story." Only 3 side missions had anything remotely to do with the main story.

Don't get me wrong...i still LOVE the game, i just started my 2nd playthrough (insanity is...insane). But the scanning system can't be ignored, I don't understand how something that impacts the outcome of the game so much is the weakest, most boring part of it. Guess its something that can be fixed for ME3. If its not....well.... my ME story might just end here :P

Seems to me we mainly have two opposing opinions here; the ones who consider the RPG-genre as something static and a singleplayer derivative of generic MMORPGs on one side, and those who are more concerned with gameplay and actual roleplaying rather than shoehorning a game to fit a rigid definition of what an RPG is supposed to be on the other.

Experience tells us dinosaurs unable to adapt will inevitably be left behind in the dustbin of (gaming) history. But hey, Diablo 3 is not that far from being released and until then there are a gazillion clones and MMORPGs out there whose aim it is to dazzle you with overly extensive loot and skillsets to distract you from the general lack of story and meaningful roleplaying.  I for one am glad Bioware value gameplay over conservative standards and have evolved the series, and with it, the RPG-genre further.

THIS. Mass Effect was never an RPG to begin with. Not one for the "hardcore" fanbase, anyway. ME2 just becomes truer to it's universe. You want an RPG? Go buy Dragon Age. You want a gripping sci-fi story that makes sense? ME2 is it.

I could just as easily say that Mass Effect was never a pure shooter to begin with, and certainly not one for the "hardcore" shooter fanbase. So why should ME2 have been made more of a shooter? Because you like shooters? Hyopcrite much? You like it because you like shooters, and it becoming more of a shooter isn't a problem for you. However, there's no reason for people to be such JACKASSES towards RPG fans who are a tad miffed that Mass Effect has gone from being about 60/40 RPG/shooter to being about 80/20 shooter/RPG. In getting more of what YOU wanted, they LOST much of what THEY wanted.

And not everyone who disagrees with this new direction is some stat-whoring micro-managing masochistic MMORPG zealot either. I just don't like that ME now feels more like a mission-based shooter with dialog trees than it does any sort of open-world RPG.

I can't agree ME1 was one of the worst games I have ever played. If it was a movie then it would of been one of the best in history but as a game a completel failure. ME1 had characters, story, weapons, ridiculous plot, but none of that matters if the gameplay is just absolutely terrible. You couldn't pay me to play an hour of ME1. There is just nothing there...no reward for doing anything. Limited animations, just slow...dull...pointless combat. ME2 seems to of pulled away from the deep RPG aspect but I think it is a perfect balance of PRG & Shooter. I'm only 15 hours in & I couldn't be more satisfied. This game has awesome characters, amazing side quests, it is rather linear but what Bioware game isn't? At first I felt the environments were recycled often along with the quest paths but now the game is really opening up & I can't blieve how much they improved every last aspect of ME1. The only downfalls I see is 1 plot is just there, no shock & all like before(but we have side quests to add to story) 2 some RPG elements were lost (less loot, less customizing our chars) BUT there is plenty to back this game up as a great RPG & shooter. Money well spent unlike the money I wasted on ME1. I would love to know all the plot connections from ME1 but I'll never finish it due to severely broken game mechanics.

Just went to Illium. OH MY GAAAD ITS FRECKIN AWESOME! That place is the coolest place in a video gaem I've ever been to. I want to live there. How could anyone be bored with this game? I'ts got the best of both worlds: an awesome shooter that's fast paced and intense, and the rpg elements that make it personal and different then anyone elses game. I actually care a bout telling my squad where to hide and what power to use compared to the me 1 when it didn't really feel like it mattered where they went.

Thank you Bioware for THE greatest game ever made!

I agree completely. rpgs are like heavy metal to the mainstream. Most dont like it and it needs to be softened up and watered down with some pop but in mass effects case it means it needs to be watered down with more of a shooter emphasis. I mean ammo? wtf man.

They took Ozzy Osbourne and made him Britney Spears.  Thing is that really happened to ozzy and he had his own reality show.  IF it can happen to Ozzy it can happen to Mass Effect. Money talks.  Ozzy is a watered down puss himself now.  Ozzy sold out.  So did bioware.  So did George Lucas.   It happens.   Yeah the majority of people out there don't get what depth and intelligence actually is and the mainstream plays video games now because they are cool.  Not what they used to be either.  Go on xbox live sometime and listen ot the people.  That wil tell you something.  EA and bioware are out to make money.  That's just reality.  most people are dumbasses and don't knwo ****.  Companies like EA take advantage of the dumbasses and make money off them.  Hey guess what american idol is a terrible tv show and a freak show.   It sells.   There is nothing talented about it.   The dumbasses ultimately get what they want.   The majority of people aren't that smart.  Video games are becoming more mainstream and more people are playing games.   More money to be made off the dumbases.   The people that are actually intelligent and were ahead of the curve ultimately get screwed.   Yeah harsh.  But true.  Kid's these days only know what they know.  These companies are targetting a certain demographic and take advantage of people ignorance and lack of knowledge.  Not much different than what cigarette companies do.  If you've ever seen the movie idiocrisy we aren't that far off.  I do hope as people get older they educate themselves and notice these trends because I see it all the time.
