Though to be serious I'm pretty sure it works like a colony of ants and the broodmother is the queen. Or was it bees? IDK. That species of annoying insects that live with a big group of people that are born male if nobody inseminates them or female if someone (or something?) does inseminate them.


Although insemination doesn't happen I think, since they just take random women from all over Thedas, force feed them like it's a fetish and then have them produce Darkspawn babies..... Somehow?

I don't know about bees, but I read somewhere that at least one such species is actually mostly nonreproductive female drones while the small group of reproductive males basically just hangs around in the nest all day periodically mating with the queen.

Read a fanfic that had a scene like that as a nightmare that the Warden had (f!Cousland).  It was..... idk how to describe it.  At the very least, it was rated T, so I didn't have to worry about it going in depth.
