Is the PC UI better yet?

After hearing about ther horrible PC UI, I promised myself that I'd wait until BioWare actually made a real PC interface for this game to buy it. Has that happened??

Dragon Age Origins was one of my favorite games ever, so I really want to play this, but I'm not letting BioWare get away with this "made for PC" bullshit when it clearly wasn't.

So, please tell me it's all better now!

Bioware's made some improvements but nothing substantive. However, and this is my particular pet peeve, a shitty UI does not mean that the game isn't made for PC. TW2 is a great example, since it was made to take advantage of PC hardware but made to run with a controller first and foremost.

Ty for mentioning this point. FOr all the griping about The DA:I controls, I found them to be much easier than TW2, using mouse and keyboard in each case.

I believe the controls have improved quite a lot since release, but then again I can use the Mouse/KB controls in Witcher 2 without any problems either.

Recently started another Dark mode playhthrough in prep for TW3.

The UI is terrible. It hasn't changed at all.

The controls are still poor, but you get used to them. They did pick off some low-hanging fruit and added in a sometimes-functional auto-attack key, but things are largely the same as they were at release.

You should try playing. I think the controls do detract from the gameplay (thanks in no small part to them attempting to mimic the controls from the past games), but there's nothing that's functionally unusable. It seems clear they've gone as far as they intend to with the changes they've made in the last few patches, so there's probably not much use in waiting any longer.

Yeah, nothings much changed. It still feels slightly clunky and unresponsive at times. VERY disappointed with the PC version of the game overall.

I honestly still don't get what the problem with the UI is...

Is it the limited ability slots? That's the only "problem" I can think of...

I'm really curious here... can someone elaborate? It's not the most amazing UI ever created but it's far from shitty.

I don't have a problem with the controls in action mode, although the auto attack they added feels a bit weird since you have to press a button to activate it.

The last time I checked, the tactical cam was still pretty messy to use with a KB/M setup.

If you meant the graphical UI and not controls, then I have no idea what you're talking about.

Inventory is crap, like in Witcher 2.

And tactical camera is still atrocious. But basically if you don't plan to play trough tactical camera you can get use to controls fairly quickly.

I tried the mouse and keyboard but after less than an hour I just plugged in my trust 360 game pad. I'm not sure how much better the tactical camera would be with M&K but I never once found myself needing to go into that mode anyway. Although I'm starting a new play through as a mage on "hard" so I might try M&K again and see if the tactical play is any better. The lack of ability slots is the real disappointment with Inquisition though; having so many awesome and useful abilities to choose from only to be limited to 8 is a real tragedy. This is especially problematic once you unlock specialties because by the time you get them you already have all 8 abilities filled and if you want to use some from your specialty you'll need to re-spec your character. I would have preferred to have the ability to map a few skills to the "wheel" especially focus based attacks since you don't really use them that much. In fact my character was basically limited to 7 ability slots because I kept "mark of the rift" on my tool bar event though I only used it a few times during the game. On my next play through I plan on leaving it off and only putting it back on before boss fights.

I can only speak from my own experience, but the eight slots is a major pain, and the menu design is just terrible. There is so much going backwards and forwards through menus which could be avoided simply by having menu tabs. It's very obvious that the menus were made for console and simply ported, because the moment you plug in a controller they make sense and work as expected. Personally, I persevere with m&k because the advantage of hot keys and mouse targeting outweighs the irritation of the menu design. Oh and one more thing - NO TOOLTIPS! Mousing over skills and items should bring up descriptions of them for quick reference. Overall, the UI just feels slapped together with little thought and even less testing.

I'm not sure about that. I thought the menus were pretty bad with a controller, the most egregious fault being the inability to navigate menus with the d-pad like every other game.

Maybe I could suggest that the menus are terrible because they are designed badly, without regard to input method?

The addition of "mouse-look" made all the difference for me.  I went from having to fight the controls almost every step of the way, to being able to play almost without thinking about them.  The exception being AoE attacks, which cannot be targeted in that mode.  One has to remember to switch to the tac-cam first to gain targeting control for those.

Still not on par with DAO/DA2, but much better than at release.  ;)

Sometimes it's unresponsive, if you play DA2 or O and have a feel around it's UI you'll definitely notice the difference. As in you click on something and it doesn't happen until a small delay, or you hit the button and the sound plays after a short time(not a UI issue but a PC issue to take note of). I'll cut them some slack because it IS a new engine.

So you believe in Santa Claus also ? :D

That damn consolesque UI, those damn arial-like fonts and damn caps are hurting me (among other "details"). I have 39 hours in-game and I don't feel like playing it anymore.

My bad: I dreamed of a very good game...

Well, they did finally add in the ability to walk and to rebind the mouse buttons.   Most of the other PC UI issues will never be fixed.    The game is cross-platform title and as such is always going to suffer some design issues.     The game is also designed to be played as more of an action game now than an actual pause and play tactical game.

If you have played ESO, SWTOR, or other modern style action MMOs then the you can easily reconfigure the controls to act almost exactly like those titles.    The game is never going to play like the previous DA titles.   The tactical cam is purposefully limited because of issues in the engine.

If you buy the game, take a few hours of time to reconfigure the controls into something comfortable.   Once you get used to it, its really not bad.   Just a shame they couldn't have done a bit better job on it before release.    They need to hire someone who has NEVER picked up a controller in their life to design the PC interface.   I sort of knew before the game was released that the PC UI would be shoddy when all their demos were with the controller.

Yes it is.

The auto-attack button, the tac-cam scrolling out further, and with the ability to issue combat-commands outside of tac-cam have made things much better.

The controls still aren't as complete as they should be (can't issue movement-commands outside of tac-cam), but improvements have been made.
