In my playthroughs, I always seem to have Loghain as a Grey Warden in DAI genuinely because he is my favourite character in all of Dragon Age (yes, I believe he was right to abandon Ostagar despite the villainous protrayal of Ostagar). I have never had one playthrough with Alistair or Stroud and did not learn they could be Hawke's contact in the Wardens until a friend told me a couple of months after. I know people would say they prefer Stroud or Alistair due to us seeing Hawke having a form of contact with either of them, but I just prefer Loghain in the Warden contact role.

Who you generally prefer as Hawke's warden contact?

I've never done Loghain(no pun intended). I think I would prefer Stroud, but I hate having him die.

I've played with all three as the warden contact.

Alistair makes sense story-wise, and it's cool that he, the man who refused command during the blight is now the senior warden everyone can potentially look up to and lead them, leader of all southern wardens.

Loghain, however, I think is the best of them.

As much as I liked Loghain appearing in DAI

Him in the Warden contact role felt out of place, Alistair and Stroud made sense

Stroud, though I don't even know who he is -- DA2 held no interest to me, and I hear he's from that game, so to me he's just a random guy appearing out of the blue. Loghain is dead and Alistair rules, alone, though I still think that was a really stupid plot point ... just more palatable than the alternatives.

Alistair has more dialogue but I agree, Loghain feels right there. Or maybe I'm just too happy to see him again.

I think Stroud is the most logical option for the warden contact since he is the only one who could have interacted with Hawke. But if the sibling wasnt made a warden then Alistair could make as much sense.  Loghain is the only one who doesn't make sense, since hawke has very personal reasons to not trust him, giving how carver, and hawke possibly, were at Ostagar and suffered first-hand Loghain's pragmatism.

Not everyone sees that the same way, though they wanted to make Loghain out to be villain in DA2. Hawke has had plenty of time to make her own mistakes and get over it.

Loghain is one of my favourite characters in the series so ofc I would prefer him over all other options, including Hawke....
And him ending up the de-facto commander of the Orlesian Wardens was just to awesome to pass up.

Loghain. Alistair is king of Ferelden and I have no idea who Stroud is (never met him in DA2).

Loghain is my favorite DA character, so I prefer to see him there. If I were to purposely put a different character there, I'd choose Alistair.

Alistair and Loghain are my favourite, because I feel something for them when they die - and intend to have at least one PT where they live. Stroud is nice enough, but I don't feel anything for him. He did save Carver though, so he's got that. Plus the lip ferret.

Either Alistair or Stroud could meet Hawke depending on your Import so either one would have worked as the contact. I really don't know how Loghain ended up as as a viable option. Would have made more sense to have Loghain stationed at Adament and been a Warden you could convince to stand down.

Well, I had two different interactions with Stroud in DA2 and I could see them meeting again when Hawke had Bethany shipped out of the Free Marches, so he makes the most sense to me.

Hawke has zero interaction with Loghain in DA2 and I can't see him wanting to have any dealings with him either, as my Hawke was at Ostagar and was one of the soldiers Loghain left to die on the battlefield. But he's dead in my canon, so it doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter too much since I always kill Hawke in The Fade. Hawke ruined DA2, so he deserves to die.

I killed Loghain in DAO - never much cared for him.  I only ever recruited him once for the achievement and then immediately went back to a previous save and killed him off.  And I did not read the books to get another perspective on him.  Alistair is king in my canon so the only possible warden for my PTs is Stroud.  And most of the time I leave him in the fade because Marion Hawke is awesome.

I think the reason they did that was because they couldn't think of any other way to bring him back

The one time I had Loghain I sacrificed him because I generally hate his character and will always. As for my favorite Warden, it would be a tie between Stroud and Alistair. I never sacrifice either of them if they are the companions that Hawke talks about.

Stroud. Then you can sacrifice him and save Hawke. I would prefer Alistair though. Seeing Alistair again is so refreshing. I just hate choosing between Alistair and Hawke!

Yeah, during the climax of Act II in DA2, you'll meet a Warden wandering through (with your sibling, if they've been Wardened by Stroud).  If Alistair was still a Warden, it's him; he's a bit nicer about apologizing how he can't help with the Qunari then Stroud is, too.

(Weirdly, if he romanced the HoF and she sacrificed herself, he also gives Hawke who he just meets a reminder of his long lost love?  It's like 'Do you really want to do that, Ali?  WE JUST MET!', but, well, whatever.)

So it makes sense for Alistair to be the Warden contact, as if he's a Warden, he and Hawke did meet, if briefly.  Loghain really doesn't make so much sense... but I was glad to see him.

I like how it shows the character development of both Loghain and Alistair.  Loghain has matured in to being extremely dedicated to the Wardens, even though they don't trust and like him.  Alistair has matured in to being able to lead and comfortable with it even non-Kingly, and able to brush off words that would have hurt him severely.  And depending on your playthrough (and luck) both have awesome conversations with Morrigan: Alistiar and Morrigan's can be really sweet and adorable, I thought.

One set up I really like is if you have both Alistair and fem!Hawke single and not tragically (IE, the HoF wasn't his lover and killed himself, or she didn't kill lover Anders or have lover Seb storm out on her), and you've gotten the 'mad about blood magic, but doesn't hate the Grey Wardens' Hawke (I'm not sure how to trigger that over the 'RAWRGH GREY WARDENS ARE AWFUL RAWRGH' one), they almost seem... kind of flirtatious.  Not to the degree that would get Bioware angry 'HOW DARE IN A PLAYTHROUGH I DIDN'T ROMANCE HIM ALISTAIR SHOW ANY INTEREST IN SOMEONE ELSE' (like Darkspawn Chronicles prompted) letters, but still sort of ribbing and sweet and I was like 'If the world was nice, these two awesome people would become closer and eventually hook up and live happily ever after (until Ali's calling, anyway) without more crap in their lives'.

Then, you know, nightmare.  Yeah.  That dream ruined.

...Stroud is nice, though, as I don't feel as bad about sacrificing him (though he seems pretty cool).  Loghain and Alistair, it's really hard to sacrifice, so... um... my poor Hawkes leave a lot of broken hearts behind.

Loghain as the Warden contact made for the best narrative in my world state. Ten years ago, he was left to watch as the young woman who'd given him a chance to reedem himself gave her life away to defeat the archdemon. Ten years later, when faced with the prospect of letting another young woman with all her life ahead give it away to save them in unnecessary heroics, he decided it was time for "In death, sacrifice" to mean something, just as it did for the HoF all those years before. It was the perfect ending for his character arc, and I was glad to give him the honorable death he deserved.

Stroud. Easy to make the choice on who stays behind that way.

I don't like having any of them die (except Loghain) but I always go with Stroud. As much as I wanted to be merciful, Loghain's actions really disgusted me in Origins so I let Alistair execute him and he became King and my Warden became Queen. Alistair was always one of my favorite romance companions so having him die feels like utter betrayal. Plus, I can't kill off me (Hawke) so Stroud is the only answer.

Well, if I'm ok with tyrants being allowed to live in my playthrough to the point Loghain actually survives DA:O, it's Loghain. Good/evil actions to determine a person's value just doesn't matter to my character if I spare him.

Otherwise... on practically eery playthrough it's Stroud. I've never had Alistair remain as a Grey Warden.
