After stopping Cerberus from controlling the Reapers on Horizon, Tali can be found drinking in the Normandy's lounge. She talked about Miranda, and used the "b" word. Did I miss something? In Mass Effect 2 they never got into any arguments, nor did they talk about each other. Did something happen in one of the books?

Jack's rubbing off on her. :P

While Jack and Miranda were the rivals, Tali is still an alien - and one who, frankly, isn't genetically gifted (for the time being.. being in a suit makes her unhappy and susceptible to illness).. so she has her own reasons to feel annoyed about Miranda.

She doesn't hate Miranda. She's toasting Miranda, and is already drunk when she says all of that.

It's the truth though...

Funny that my whole ME3 squad is full of people who've lost their entire teams. Except Liara.. she just lost Feron. While the ones who are gone don't need much leadership education anymore.

I never got the impression that she hated her. Not liking someone doesn't mean you must hate them. In fact she even mentions that she respected her. All she says is that she was a b*tch. As to why someone might think Miranda is a b*tch... well, its subjective I guess, but personally I'd be surprised if anyone really has a hard time figuring that mystery out. Her personality isn't exactly one of friendly modesty nor is she particularly easy to get along with. Miranda being a b*tch hardly seems like a unique opinion of her from the Normandy crew. Don't they call her an ice queen? Or is that a community thing?

Doesn't Tali die in this situation?

No, it gets the person in the tunnel killed instead.

I think Tali explains it perfectly well: she didn't like her attitude. Miranda being with Cerberus doesn't help either...

And if you don't like someone it stings if that person has qualities that you always wanted to have, such as having the nerve to stand up to your oppressing father, or being an example of physical perfectness instead of being allergic to every microbe in the universe.

But still I think hate is a strong word.

Do you truly view the world in such a black and white scope? Must you either like someone or hate them? Not liking someone doesn't mean you must therefore hate them. I didn't like Miranda either yet I don't hate her. Though that's just me.

I also think it's just Weekes trying to give voice to this aspect of Miranda, but without Jack around, his other character has to air it out. I think Tali even mentions Jack and uses her word "Cerberus cheerleader". It gets better if we have DLC, but in the main game, this is the best we have to work with.

Pretty simple really: the characters are completely different in morality, philosophical views, disposition and attitudes on pretty much everything, as well as personality type, which generally breeds mutual dislike. Tali is fairly humble and hates Cerberus and everything it stands for. Miranda is pretty much the personification of Cerberus with a bit of pretentiousness thrown in. It's just usually more subtle than say, Jack's dislike of Miranda for similar reasons, because Tali's not really a Type A personality like the other two.

It isn't just one way either, Miranda dislikes Tali as well. Bring them both around together on missions enough in ME2, and Miranda will often have some veiled insults or catty comments to make. I forget some of the quotes since I did my playthrough for Miranda's dialouge long ago, but one that jumps out is her sarcastically calling Tali "really mature" or something to that effect for getting mad at Kor Tun's and the C-sec Officer's racism against the quarian Lia Vael. Also, it doesn't really require much imagination to discern some reasons why Miranda probably picks the engine room to ahem....consummate...her ME2 romance arc with broshep, when her two "rivals" are right there on the same deck.

"Hate" is probably a pretty strong word. I've worked or gone to school with people whom I disliked personally, but had a healthy respect for the competence and ability of. Tali herself admits she respects Miranda and even has a toast in her honour. That's not something you do for people you hate.

Tali said she did not like her, then she called her a b***h. I was just asking because in all of Mass Effect I had never heard Tali say anything like that to any one person. I thought that a lot of people liked Tali. In fact most of the crew seemed to be nice to her. Ashley -- despite her opinion of aliens -- referred to her as a sister. As soon as Tali said she did not like her, the first thought that came to my mind was, why? What happened? Then she said she was a b***h. If she was just talking about her in general then... I guess nevermind. But if something did happen between them, I would certainly like to know what it was.

No, she doesn't. The only "b-word" Tali ever even says in regards to Miranda is "bosh-tet". She says that Miranda was rude to her and always full of herself, but she never calls her a b***h.

"I didn't like her. Keelah, she was such a b!tch, but I respected her. Sometimes that's better than liking" is a direct quote. Watch the after-Sanctuary scene again.

I DID watch it again, right after playing through that segment yesterday. "B***h" was never uttered. so I'm guessing Tali has more than one variant of the speech.

I get a similar line too.

Maybe it's different if you romance Miranda. Then she's respectful. The last thing she would do is call your girlfriend names, especially after some nightmare like Horizon.

these are the only two variants I know of. Relationship Tali has a few different lines at the end and dead Miranda has her saying "I wish she were here"

Edit: Never done the Mirimance in ME3, so IDK if that modifies it, but I can't find a youtube vid.

She's not necessarily "respectful", but the way she verbally says what she says, it's in a casual and respectful tone.

I still don't like how Tali gives her speech as though Miranda dies, even when Miranda is perfectly fine. She uses all past-tense verbs ("she WAS always so rude", "I know you two WERE close").

It kind of does assume tragedy and death, in a way. It's kind of lazy.

Right around this time, Javik also has his "shard" scene about whether he should remember dead friends. Like they're assuming Shep is going through the same things. Like it works if Miranda just died... or even Jack in the next mission, if you abandoned Grissom.

Well ME3 is the best place to start playing the trilogy, and doing so causes people to die left and right sooo......

Bioware certainly was when they made that part of the marketing for ME3.

You know, I can't think of very many series where the last chapter is the best place to start. Return of the Jedi certainly isn't the best place to start with Star Wars.
