What other word should she use, slutting? Yeah, that's a real verb (sarcasm). Whoring or slutting, which would you figure is the better way to word the act of being a $lut?

Her "women" are thieves since she apparently stole something. So unless Aveline meant stealing someone's virginity, I don't think it's a sex worker that Aveline was talking about. Seems more like she's teaching people the art of pickpocketing and lockpicking to me, creating a non-violent thieves gang or something.

She discovered them like most men do. She's in the mood for sex, and here's a nice brothel that gives all you want. You need to be a prostitute yourself to discover heavily advertised brothels now?

The idea appeals to me, though the "evidence" seems to point both ways. I'd say it's up for interpretetation, or perhaps even an issue that has been made deliberately vague because it's so disproportionately provocative. I love Isabela with all my heart, and a background like this would only make her more interesting in my eyes. She is, arguably, the companion character with the most depth in DAII, and probably the most underappreciated. I don't think most people bother to look past the surface, so I appreciate threads like this. Any opportunity to further analyse Isabela makes me happy. :)

People seem to imply that she goes around all the time and bed people which, in fact, if you hear some banter she admits to Aveline that she doesn't "******" herself out as people think she does.

And Isabela is awesome.

Edit: why is wh0ring in asterisks. Really?

She's a woman who is comfortable inside her own skin. She knows what she likes, and she doesn't believe that she should feel ashamed for liking it.

Isabela accepts herself as she is. She makes no excuses, offers no apologies. She is capable of caring for other people, and she does, with great passion and loyalty, but it's always going to be on her terms.

I'd say that's pretty much the opposite of being a harlot.

I never got the impression that used to have sex for coin. Having said that, I do find the "she would never do that" responses interesting. She is after all a person who murders for coin. The latter is a lot worse than the former.

HSF, it isn't about what's worse. It's about the way she identifies herself. Killing people? Meh, it's a job. But the way she embraces her sexual identity, that's who she is. I'm not saying that she'd never accept money or gifts from a lover because hey, if somebody wanted to give her money for the sake of giving her money, she wouldn't turn it down, but I think she'd draw the line at anything that suggested she was selling herself.

She felt betrayed by her mother because her mother sold her as somebody's bride. That's a really big deal for her.

That said, she doesn't have a problem with prostitutes. She's a regular at the Blooming Rose, and if Hawke hires one, she wants one, too. But she's playing for pleasure, and the transaction is conducted on her terms. I don't imagine she'd react well to somebody who pushed a handful of coins at her and started issuing demands.

Isabela was a victim of abuse by her husband, sold to him as a child. For years she was alone, never with someone that cared about her, who treated her like she was worth something. Her mother got rid of her, her husband was just a sexually abusive dick, and then Zevran killed him, and she was free to do what she wanted for the first time in her life. So she took to piracy and the life therein.

The reason why she's teaching them to fend for themselves is because she's had to fend for herself for so long, and the world doesn't look kindly on women. She's selfish as a means to survive, a person who betrays before she can be betrayed. She does this because she has such low self-esteem from her years of abuse that she feels she's worthless, that people won't care about her, that they'll just use her. So she keeps them at arm's length. She feels that these women need to be able to look after themselves, because no one else will.

She's not teaching them because she was a sex worker. She's teaching them because she's been a victim of abuse when she was married to Luis years ago.

All of that makes her growth more poignant to me, if you show her you care about her.

I didn't know any of that. This makes me view her character in a slightly better light despite otherwise not really having a good opinion of her in general. Interesting. Thank you.

I would say no. Isabela is just a woman who enjoys sex and talking about sex. If she were man she would be cool and a stud, but because she is a woman is considered a harlot and a tramp.

I wish they had put more emphasis on the pirate and duelist aspect of the character instead of making it all about how she has sex a lot. Jack Sparrow is also a heart-breaker, but in his case it's just an anecdote, not a huge part of the character. But of course he is a male.

i think the reaction to isabela is interesting in general because sexualised women are so common in video games we don't speak up much, but once you give them agency like with isabela they get slurs hurled at them.

i kind of think people's reaction to the idea of her being a sex worker is an extension of that though. it sort of goes against some of the stereotypes we have of sex workers as disempowered victims.

Not for me. I think prostitution should be legal, and I have absolutely no moral or ethical issues with prostitution or prostitutes to speak of. So don't act like I'm just arguing you because I have some problem with the idea of Isabella being one. My problem is the facts don't like up with that assumption.
