It's really obscure, and I'm not sure if anyone's done this before- but I can't seem to be able to start a romance with Dorian even though I already A) did both personal quests B) Did the do with him and C) Asked him multiple times if I could 'get to know him better' (which was the Start a Romance With Dorian option)

During the Sex Scene I selected the option that wasn't breaking up with him but it also didn't start the romance fully. I have his romanced tarot card but during the Wicked Eyes Wicked Hearts campaign he didn't show up at the end??? I was so dissapointed! Damn I went through three hours of bad accents just to get to the very ending and... he doesn't ask me to dance.

Right now, since i reloaded a previous save, when I talk to him in Skyhold he only has one conversation option which is - "We should talk" (and he says something like "oh, is there news on the 'us' front, then?" and I say "I want us to be closer". It's supposed to start the romance but..) For some reason, I'm able to select this conversation over and over. Like, it never goes away. And I'm pretty sure it's supposed to.

I just went through the entirety of WEWH I'm uber pissed and I need that mustache on my inquis. Does anyone understand what might be wrong??

I don't think it's a glitch, he tells you "Perhaps this is something we can speak on later... once we see whether you or I survive this whole business." And there's reference in epilogue to this decision, but he puts romance "on hold" if you choose that option.

No way really?? Aww.. That's so disappointing. I suppose I should have chosen better.

Still.. it doesn't explain the whole "start a romance with dorian" option that never disappears from his conversation. I saw that after the scene and I assumed that I could just start it up whenever.. No sweat.

Well thank you anyway!

If you're stuck in a loop, then did you not kiss him after his personal quest with his father and instead kissed him during the talk with Mother Giselle? Because that gets the romance bugged for me.

Nah I kissed him right after I gave him the amulet.

Dorian says he doesn't care, but he's specifically looking for a romantic relationship. If you tell him you just want to keep it casual, that cancels the rest of the romance. It's not a glitch.

Just in case anyone else has the 'repeated conversation' bug, I put up a video of it on youtube.

It's not a bug? Alright, well I admit to defeat, it's my fault not the game's.

Time to go back to earlier saves! :)

I know OP went back to earlier saves, but I have been a fool and not really done multiple saves at key points...don't ask me why. I usually do. Recklessness? Whatever.

If anyone has come up with a solution, please post. I was wondering if the Magister's Birthright won't trigger because you have to be at a particular part of the main quest? Right now I am right before "Here Lies the Abyss." To keep myself entertained, I've been doing random map quests and going to places, some fun, some not so fun (I like Exalted Plains, but the wasteland stuff? Boring). Should I do Here Lies the Abyss but not do "Whispers"?

Do I just restart the entire game??? Quite a nuclear option. The benefit of doing all those sidequests is that I'm now a level 16 mage, which means I really don't want to start over (oh, yeah, and 60 hours of gameplay).

Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope...

You should be able to get the quest before here lies the abyss , you can wrap up Dorian romance shortly after setting foot in Skyhold.

Anyway you need to do his father quests first , flirt with him , and have high approval.

I know this is back in April, but as this thread was necroed I really want to ask and hopefully the OP is still around...

If you like Dorian and want the romance, why did you pick the keep it casual option and not reload once you saw it? He shuts right down (emotionally) after you say this; it's a complete reversal of his attitude. So despite his actual words, I don't really know how you can think that it's really anything more than what your PC says: a casual fling for sex only.

To me his reaction to that option is even worse than the one-night stand option. He's pissed in that, but his utter disappointment (because this kind of casual sex is what he's used to) is just heartbreaking, and of course it's considerably worse if you've picked the investigate, asked him about it, and he explains fully what it's like in Tevinter.

Also, during WEWH if you are in a romance there is a "I expect a dance" option during his dialogue.

OP here! to answer your question: I did it because I'm a sucker for angst and a good story. I was hoping at the time to turn it around, (you're right, Dorian is extremely disappointed and upset that it turned out to be casual and that's what I was going for) and to go from "love isn't worth it, this is how it will always be. " to "wow this is real". But sadly the romance's guidelines wouldn't allow me to romance him after I said I only wanted it to be casual. :/
There's also the fact that I play by my Inquisitor's personality, and I know a lot of other players do this (intensive role play). Trust me, we're it possible I would jump Dorian's bones and ask him for marriage at the first chance... But that's not what my commitment-fearing Inquisitor would do.

Hi,

Thanks for trying to help. So I actually did do all that. Father's quest, war table quests, flirted, pretty high approval (flirts back, etc.), and the game gives me the option to start a romance with him. "This will start a romance with Dorian." I've done this over 100 times. Leave Skyhold, come back. Do side quests, come back. But it doesn't start. No messenger from Leilana, no Ponchard at Val Royeaux. Unlike OP, I didn't do the do and then go for casual. Blagh. If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know.

Well I don't know what's the problem :s

It could be glitched or you're lacking a tiny bit of approval ?

Did you do the mage quest or templars?

Althought usually doing the Maevaris Tevinter war table mission + tracking and killing venatori should do the trick.

OH hoping to turn it around certainly explains it, and I do appreciate your attraction to angst. I've seem other people who would like the option to "take it slow" and then have a love scene later on, but that isn't doable either. If fact, I read one person that watches both cutscenes and just head-canon's that that is what happens anyway.

That said, everything plays into Dorian's history and personality, which is one reason the romance can seem like it moves really quickly after you get to Skyhold, especially if the player doesn't deliberately space out the events. In fact if you take the no-sex path he does actually say, "Quickly? By my standards we've been positively chaste." He likes the Inquisitor a lot, and things said here and there are starting to give him the feeling that there might be "more," but he's afraid to hope for it. So, he does what he always does, what he's used to and has experience with, and goes for the sex. If you actually do have sex, then he wants to know what to expect for the future, and even though he knows it's "foolish" to hope for more, and does not expect to be told "Yes," he still hopes regardless. Having those hopes dashed, even though he expected it, was a major disappointment and his walls go up and remain there as he continues his physical relationship with the Inquisitor.

So, while I do understand your RP aspect of it and like the idea, the way it all plays out actually makes sense for the character. This is in addition to these romances being optional content, so they aren't going to get too carried away with having them be too complicated.

(You probably knew all of that, but I can't pass up an opportunity to talk about Dorian.)

I... hate to say it but I'm thinking that you should just start over, or perhaps just finish out this play so you've seen everything and then do a second play. For the future, I do recommend a hard save before and after every major mission. And I do say this as a person that has gone back dozens of hours in a play because I was dissatisfied with some inconsequential choice I made.

If you're at the point where the "hit this button to start a romance" thing appears, but it doesn't actually happen, I'm really thinking that you're glitched :(.
