Can you romance Liara in ME3 if you rejected her (gently) in ME1?

Title says it all. I'm feeling a bit contrary in my new playthrough, and want my Shepard focused and professional in the first game if at all possible, with his "near-death" experience providing a wake-up call and his eventual bonding with Liara during the Shadow Broker DLC and throughout ME3 resulting in a relationship with a healthy built-up.

Is this a viable way to play? I'm currently at the point where Liara first confronts you about the possibility of mutual attraction, and "I just want us to be friends" is the closest option to "We're all working through a lot of stuff at the moment, and this isn't the time to explore that. We just killed your mother together, for one thing."

Will I be able to rekindle a relationship with her in the sequels if I turn her down like this? Or is it a one-time decision for the entire trilogy? Or do I have to admit that I am attracted to her first before turning her down? And if I do that, will I still be able to let her down gently?

I did not reject her gently in ME1 and used the horrible, mean choices, and she's still all over me in ME3, and all I did was pick the "nice" answers every time I talked to her. She's attached to you no matter what it seems.

So I guess, go for it :)

It doesn't matter what you say to Liara. Except specifically rejecting romance options (but that resets in each game. She has a short memory).

You can romance Liara in ME3 even if you were mean to her in ME1.

It's just like that.... The woman has a huge crush on Shepard even if you threaten to throw her into a volcano.

I must've missed that mission. :D

I think it only happens if you go to Therum after Feros, Noveria and Virmire.

Oh wait.. maybe you're right.. I think I've seen something like that.

It's so hard to make her mad. I think the only thing that gave her pause was killing Falere. And even then, she tries sparking up romance right afterwards on the Citadel.

That's the downside of a lack of approval/disapproval and a shallow reputation system, which ensures that characters don't really remember a lot of what you do. The only one who ever seems to remember what you did is Wrex lol.

It's too bad actually. Because there is a good character there. I can see that. It's also a failure of the whole "import" process. Like it's cool that she asks about any of the other LIs at the end of LotSB. It's a nice close to that story. But the fact that she doesn't remember that in ME3 is annoying. It makes her look like some tramp, trying to steal other people's spouses. Which is not the intent, I'm sure.. but still.

Personally I never done it. Mainly because I like Liara and considering that she is pretty much railroaded into being a friend or possible love interest, my Shepards are usually nice to her. Or they gradually warm up to her after Noveria and after she gaves Shepard's body to Cerberus.

I never killed Falere because I always had Samara alive for the monastery and I don't let her commit suicide. Although she is marked for death in my next ME2 playthrough... Maybe I will kill Falere then.

Falere fits for me... in a metagamey sort of way. My dude started off a Renegade.. but by ME2, got a little soft. Morinth got the better of him, so it scared him shitless. He's paranoid about Ardat Yakshi. Secondly, I kind of wanted my Shep to be hypocritical in one thing. He's very pro-Organic and thinks nature should take it's own course and evolve freely. So he helps Krogan, rachni, etc.. But the Asari... they have this oddity. And he's isn't cool with it. And Morinth's words haunt him. "We are the genetic destiny"... even though Samara dismissed that.

But I digress ;)

I always rejected Liara in ME1. But in this playthrough, I axed the romance trigger by being mean to her. It was during when she said she looked up Shepard's history through extranet. I used renegade option even when she says sorry. She got a bit mad and saluted Shepard in the end... which was pretty cute.

But if you're always paragon with her in ME3, you'll get a chance to hook up with her again. In my current playthrough, my Shepard didn't even have an option to say "Just friends?" so I think the flirt trigger is somewhere when she asked a sitting Shepard about who Shepard is fighting for and Liara will respond "I hope I'm among them".

lol.. yeah, the salute is about the cutest thing she's done. Which is ironic....given how you have to get it.

Its the only time in the trilogy you can talk to her like that. Too bad since there are other parts in the trilogy that she deserves to be talked to like that

Maybe it's because Drew K wrote her then. He wrote so many parts of ME1 and had to be objective. Still though, he started it... he's the one that made her obsessed. lol

For me kaiden is even worse. He doesn't even feel you out to try and determine your orientation, at least steve did that, he just invites you to have a beer and wham!

I was like...dude , yer my bro...but you have seen me with women...whats up?

I think the romance triggers in ME are a bit weird. Being nice means that everyone is falling in love with me?

I hope for the next ME they will have a more complex system. It's not the end of the world, but it could be so much more.

I had one playthrough with Kaidan awhile back, but never noticed anything romance related.

Steve is funny. I like helping him, but being nice triggers some romance like lines. Like the shuttle crash at the end. "Anything for you!" It doesn't bother me much though. It's not like he's the "close talker" or trying to be intimate confidant like Liara.

Everytime I have Kaidan alive in ME3, I've learned to lock in my romance before going to have diner with him. That way he doesn't come on to you.

That way Shepard actually says: "You are my brother Kaidan."

Question: does he say "are you flirting with me" if you ask him about his biotics during the hospital visit? He does not on a non-import run. I didn't buy the bottle in that playthough, can it be tied to that?

In my first ME3 playthrough (import-run) I also didn't buy the bottle, and he didn't ask if I'm flirting with him, but later he did say in the café that he has a thing for me (I had dumped both Liara and Miranda before and not locked-in any other romance).

And you're saying in a non-import run he's not onto you in the café scene, granted you didn't buy the bottle for him?

I never did a non import run of ME3 so I don't know. However I had heard that if you didn't bought him the bottle he wouldn't come on to you so I didn't bought the bottle.

He didn't say "are you flirting with me" but I accidently asked about his biotics a second time and he did say it. I think buying the bottle ends up being irrelevant to the romance because I loaded my previous save, didn't gave him the bottle, he didn't said anything about flirting with him and Kaidan still asked me if I was interested during the Citadel meet up.

Yeah, he was all bro-like during the cafe scene. But I romanced Liara on that playthrough and that could've been the reason.

I'm not sure whether romance imports count for that conversation. And I'm not sure if Jack or Miranda romances count here. I don't think he'll say anything during the dinner if you are locked into romance with either of them but the hospital scene plays quite early in the game. I don't remember if you could reaffirm your interest in Jack or Miranda prior to that.
