Hello, I am trying to configure my mass effect 2 game and the configuration utility continues to crash within about 30 seconds of opening.  (there are no actual error codes/D's being reported though I just started using Windows 7 so if there is a location in W-7 that I can look up the error code for this crash let me know and I will add it to this post)

Specs:  Sony Vio VPCF115FM/ i7-1.6/ 6GIG 1.333FSB/ Nvidia GeForce GT 330m 1 GIG DDR3
OS:        Windows 7 Home Premium Edition
Original medial game was installed from:   STEAM

Also to note I have tried accessing the Configuration utility both with the UAC enabled and Disabled and this has no affect. 

Please note that I also have Mass effect 1 and the same problem occurs with its configuration tool as well.  The Mass Effect 1 game came from a retail box set.

This makes it insanely hard to import my Mass effect 1 characters.  Is there a way of manually copying the saved games into the correct locations, if so what are the correct locations?

Try running the MassEffect2Config.exe program in the installation folder as Administrator. If that doesn't work, try the workaround posted Here.

Ok, will for me luckily that seemed to work as I can now see my character from the old ME1 game ready to import however this does not really fix the core problem: Mass Effect 2 Configuration Utility Crashing.

Thank you for this update for getting the saves to work and I hope that others will see this posting and be able to get their ME1 chars in to the new ME2 game.

However I am noticing that a very large number of persons are having the same problem with the ME1 and ME2 configuration utility crashing all the time for no apparent reason on Windows 7. Is there a patch or a fix in the works for this by any chance? My question is because I would like to be able to reconfigure the graphics if they get too hard on my laptop, I have not even entered the game yet to see how the graphics will affect my system so adjusting them is kind of important for me.

You should be able to adjust in-game as well, by clicking on Extras, then Options.



No idea what's causing the configuration utility crash or whether they're working on a fix. Running as Administrator doesn't help?

would anyone happen to know why the config utility is reading my processor as single core and not duo?

I have reviewed the in game graphics settings and I have to wonder, why are all the advanced settings not there too as a backup settings location for this game? Without a working ME2 Configuration tool the advanced ant aliasing and so on cannot be set. This is actually kind of important as my system is capable of greater visuals but right now all I can adjust is the resolution basically. Is there any research into this problem and if so can I assist in some way, debugging that can be done to help find the root cause of this problem. If so I am happy to help in any way I can..

ME-2 was not optimized for a controller, but instead for the mouse and keyboard.  The configuration Utility doesn't cooperate nicely on an unpatched game, either.

There is no one here but game players, and very few of us any more. If you want instant help, you go to EA for it.  You already have as much of an answer as your incomplete information justifies.  A complete problem report hasn't been provided for diagnostics purposes.

i got the same problem only iam trying to run ME1, i trye to run it as adminstrator but it doesn't work.
