I'm old school.  I prefer the bad ending to Chrono Trigger if you lose the fight against Lavos if you fight him (it?) in 1999.

I apologize for getting so wildly off-track.  To get this back to the ME series, I do think that's something I'd love to see Mr. Dombrow write.  I'd love a few non-standard Game Overs, although probably not of the succubus kind.  I enjoyed that, but I don't think it would be as effective if done again.  Arrival's was good, and Overlord's was brief but very creepy.  Time to bring those kinds of failure screens back.   :D

Overlord had a failed ending? Never knew.

You have to wait for David to connect and not shoot the lights.  Brief, but very effective.

You have to wait for the timer to hit zero, but yes it does:

Wait you mean an Overlord game? I thought you meant the ME's Overlord DLC.

I edited my post.  Grabbed the wrong video and mixed up my descriptions.  It's Arrival where you wait for the timer to hit zero and then you get the fail ending.   :P

If you run a failShep, this is how his journey must end. Not in a blaze of glory, but like a total sucker!

I do enjoy a good non-standard game over screen.

That Overlord one is awesome.

Probably the best one of those I've seen was with Fallout 1, if the main character ended up being made into a super mutant:

There is a difference between the two however. If Samara is gunning for Shepard it is because of his or her actions. Morinth on the other hand wants to murder Shepard because she's a sadist who is aroused by it.

Samara at least can be trusted until the mission ends, and is a lot less likely to be murdering crew members or civilians while on shore leave. The only reason to choose Morinth is just to see how the story differs with her recruited. From a story perspective it never made sense for Shepard to recruit her over Samara. She is a loose cannon in ways that Samara is not, and would pose a much greater risk of compromising the mission.

fair point, that Samara is at least going to be more predictable/reliable, but I don't think either of them really make sense on such a mission. I also don't really make a distinction between their reasoning/ motives for trying to murder me insofar as they are both ridiculous. One has horrible psychological issues, and the other is Asari Al-Qaeda levels of zealous insanity.

Of course I wouldn't recruit either if not for then missing out on Niftu-Cal, but I generally skip Samara's LM.

I think it's an important thing for choice based narratives to have a 'bad' ending or several (although I do kind of dislike that term because it makes it sound like there's a correct one). Even if the player never gets them it adds weight to everything if it's possible to really screw up and have the game acknowledge it.

I'm so hyped now! This is amazing news, but I hope he keeps his fanservice writing to a minimum this time. I could only hear so many in-game inside jokes about calibrations in ME3 before I started shuddering.

The most desireable outcome when you have choices that affect a story are endings that are all equally valid, but I do agree that, with ME2 for example, you could get a pretty bad ending if most squaddies died and there was a sense of accomplishment if everyone made it out alive.

Those two endings are exactly the same, only missing a few people.

I'm a little out of the loop, has BioWare named a new lead writer for the next ME game?

Not that I know of. Unless you count Mac Walters..."creative director". I don't know what that is. Still a lead writer? Or maybe just "loremaster"? /shrug

I haven't played any Halos after 2 (but I recently bought the remaster). So I don't know if this is a good or bad thing.

that depends on which part of the Halo fandom you ask.

In my opinion, its a very very bad thing

I'm glad he's back too. I think Tuchanka is the best, but also think he had some misses too (Thessia). Maybe the latter was due to rewrites/time constraints.

I loved Thessia as far as the writing goes. It was really emotional and gave a great sense of hopelessness.

The general situation is sad... it's just... I don't know. Still not one of my favorites from him...

However, one thing that's always teared me up is seeing those Asari girls jump up and down when you destroy the Reapers :D
