Hey all, just an idea that has been bouncing around in my head for a while.

In each of the games there has always been a clear goal (though in DA2 that goal changed with each act) and a clear present antagonist/threat that would have to be thwarted for said goal. I had an idea, what if there was one ultimate but multiple antagonists, a story wherein the PC isn't just facing of against one group but multiple groups, kind of like the Orzammar assembly plot line in DAO but on a much grander scale. Imagine the following the scenario

2 factions of significant power are fighting over an ancient power that was recently discovered. Both sides have their own motives but it is clear that if either side were to win then Thedas will end up paying the price. You, the PC, are seeking to stop both groups but along the way there is a third party interested in doing the same thing. At first this party seems to ignore you but as you make progress they begin to view you as another threat that needs to be addressed. Now you're fighting three groups. All the while on the side a greedy merchant has been exploiting the chaos for their own ends; they aren't a clear threat like the others but are enough of a problem that they too will need to be taken down at some stage. A normal good vs bad scenario has now become a multi-party struggle that the player must now untangle.

The scenario above is just an example but imagine a situation wherein you have to juggle dealing with multiple opposing factions. It wouldn't just be another us vs them scenario as the "them" is no longer as clear. The past games have had diversion from the "them" and focused on other groups for a time but these moments were short lived and quickly returned to dealing with the "them". It could also introduce a dynamic feature wherein the player will gave to careful in not strengthening one group by targeting other groups; against Corypheus every time you won a victory he was ultimately weakened but in the above scenario if one group was weakened it may be a fleeting victory for the player as now the other groups are that little bit stronger.

I'm not being too clear about this right now I know (its 3 in the morning as I write this) but it just an idea I wanted to get out there. Just my thoughts and would like to hear from you all if such a thing could be viable in future instalments? Do you have similar ideas and scenarios you would like the propose and discuss and if you don't think it'll work then why not?

I like the idea of multiple warring factions for the player to have to contend with.

My only concern would be too much "grayness" for my taste. I'd really rather the player have the option to decide where they want to fall on the sliding scale of idealistic to cynical morality, and not have it be decided for you.

Edit: By which I mean I could see this looking a lot like Westeros, and I'd really rather it didn't.

I personally prefer the singular antagonist formula.

How do you do this without satisfactorily without having to spend a lot of resources on alternate plot lines?
