I've been enjoying the Frostback Basin (no spoilers) and it occurs that one thing I really appreciate about open regions is not only a decent size, but vertically varied. I know some people didn't like collecting shards in the Forbidden Oasis because they were hard to get to, but I liked them for exactly the same reason.

The rocky outcrops in the Hissing Wastes are the best bits of the Hissing Wastes in my opinion.

And the Frostback Basin is as much about up and down as it is about sideways  :).

Do you like a topographically rich areas or do you prefer rolling flatness?

I like it.

I'm one of the (seemingly few?) people who've enjoyed (as much as I've cursed) all the platforming to get to shards and crazily-placed loot chests. :)

Having a vertical plain is very good; the problem is having a very inaccurate map that doesn't really show where things are located vertically.

I like it as well.  Adds another dimension to the game.

The best part of the Storm Coast was finding ways to climb the square rocks.

Now you mention it, I loved getting the shards in Lady Shayna's Valley on the similar rock formations.

I definitely like it. Flatness would get boring extremely fast.

I like it, and I am also glad that not every way is available but sometimes you also have to find the proper path to climb up a mountain. What I don't like are mazes. Let alone the Oasis, which by the way is quite a small area, Empryse du Lyon always give me headaches with all those tunnels, ramps, chairs and so on.

EDIT. Maybe for my 4th playtorugh I will have finally memorized all the routes...

I like it but why is it always night in the Hissing Wastes? That is one aspect that I think the devs took a shortcut on. At least the weather changes in one of the areas.

I like it. Elevation is great for my archers!

I like rolling weather too, though in Bethesda games I'd usually just wait to morning...

Knowing that the Frostbite 3 adaptation was a tough one, I can understand why not, this time.

I like that areas are varied in veritcality , but I think next time they need be aware of platforming when creating the new areas.

Jumping can be fun at times, but can also be very frustrating. <_<

I like the natural topography and variety of the maps which makes the world's appearance more real. There were several frustrating moments initially when trying to reach seemingly unreachable spots to fulfill a quest.

Now, on my third playthrough it is not an issue at all, so I can just enjoy the scenery.

I like it. Elevation is great for my archers!

I also use it in ranged combat as an advantage for my mages. :)

I kinda like it, except that I wind up using tactics and buffs during combat so I've got some health potions left to explore afterwards.  JoH is great for spotting alternate routes....

I like it. It's fun to exploit the elevation differences in combat.

Though I realize that probably only works because the pathfinding is so awful. But climbing up above the deep valleys in Emprise and attacking from above, when the enemies can't do anything but stand there and die, is quite enjoyable.

I don't have any problem with the maps.

I'm not super fond of map like the Frostback Basin.

Basically this happens :

Inquisitor :"hey there's a way doooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwnnnn....*falls of cliff which wasn't a path down.* help me I broke my legs!"

Cassandra:*disgusted noise.*

Inquisitor has been trying to climb this moutain for 10 minutes...

Inquisitor :"I assure you all this is the way up!It's on the map!"

Keep on jumping for ten more minutes and falling all over the place.

One hour later find the easy path up just around the corner.

Cassandra:*disgusted noise.*

The worst has been the Frostback Basin at night.Seriously , you can't see a damn thing.

Guild Wars 2 made me accustomed to jumping puzzles so shard collecting is a welcome addition—I'm still not finished with my collection but the view is always breathtaking no matter what. I show people gifs and snapshots of the scenery and people think it's real. I think visually arresting games should take full advantage of their open worlds the way GW2 and DA:I has more often.

I like that there is some terrain in the game... but do you have any idea how many hours I have been spent jumping around, trying to get up to some mountain for lame piece of shard? ^^;

I mean Dragon Age is not supposed to be platform game, at least I think so, I think developers could have took little easier approach to mountains and climping them in the game.

You're not wrong, though I suspect games like Skyrim have encouraged our confidence in climbing sheer rock faces  :D.

In DAI I find there is invariably a 'best path' to shards, including in a few cases (particularly in the DLC) some jumping down or across...

Som how I never find the easy route until I'm in top so I end up jumping around and trying to get up the hardest way.

At least in Skyrim my mount could climb almost 90 degree mountain :P Skyrim horses are apparently way more badass than DAI horses.  I mean they are like these: http://41.media.tumb...1vn29o1_400.png

I'm kinda burned by the "verticality" buzzword when it comes to Frostbite games. During my first encounter with it, I learned that it was a fancy way of saying "even more effin' snipers on the rooftops".  :D
