It really depends.

If I´m doing a serious play from a challenge perspective, then I pick my squad based on the most efficient combination for the mission at hand base on what type of opposition I´ll be facing. Their proficiency in stopping husks or quickly disabling geth, rachni or krogans will be the major factors depending on each situation. Also, the squad needs to have at least someone capable of opening locked content. My squad-mates will also have to complement my Shepard and compensate for his/her shortcomings. So the class I´m using and the talents I´ve evolved will also impact the decision.

If I´m just playing casually for the sake of the storyline, on a very easy difficult level or even abusing the console commands to make me invincible then it´s just a matter of trying different combinations to see if there are new results, or take the characters that best suit each particular mission.

There´s also the factor that I like to role-play. My shepard does not I would do in his or her place, but what he or she would do in a way consistent with his or her personality. For example a Paragon shepard that is open to aliens would gladly take Liara to confront Benezia. However, a renegade distrustful of aliens would never do such a thing since he or she would have many suspicions.

But if it was really up to me story-wise:

Rescue Liara: Given the climate of the planet, I think Wrex and Garrus do have more stamina to endure the situation.

Noveria: Liara and Kaidan. Rachni are vulnerable to biotics. And Liara will hopefully smooth things with her mother.

Feros: Kaidan and Ashley. Seems like a human matter;

Virmire: Garrus and Ashley. The place seems to favor shooting enemies from long distances, and it seems like a chance to allow ashley to repay saren for the attack on the colony where she lived in peace. I would save ashley at the end.

Illos: Liara (since she´s the resident expert) and Garrus (the citadel was his home).

I probably would never take Tali with me. Unless there was an instance of totally cleaning the area of enemies and then bringing her to open something or collect geth material. Otherwise I would not endanger a little girl that can so easily die from a cut in her clothes, much less bring her to a battlefield.

The scourge of Cerberus, Commander Verity "Blonde Bombshell" Shepard, Doctor Liara "Blue Angel" T'Soni and Gunnery Chief Ashley "Dark Destroyer" Williams are...

Girl Squad!

I was a grinning loon when the girls got back together in ME3.

LOL, I love this. I used to do the same on DA with Leliana, Morrigan and Wynne.

You can get really good full squad screenshots in ME3.

At the beginning of Grissom Academy

When investigating the asari corpse at the Ardat-Yakshi monastery (it's perfectly croppable!)

Felt like mentioning that in case you ever feel the desire to take more hot shots of the Girl Squad.  B)

I don't think I've ever gone somewhere and not taken Garrus, unless I didn't have a choice. It feels weird not having him there, I'm always like "yeah but what would Garrus say if he was here?"

so it bothers me if I don't bring him.

I can guess aoibhealfae's answer also

Hehehe~~ totally. My Spectre Squad always work together beautifully since Eden Prime.

mXjfQh4.jpgBut it really started with me finding the effective squad thing for Insanity playthroughs. My general motto with ME was the faster I kill people, the faster I get to the next cutscenes (with my OTPs!!). I don't think FPS was ME's strong suit until ME3. Cover mechanics was generally problematic in ME1 (walk-crouch like a sloth..) and ME2 (cutscene ended and you're standing like an idiot while enemies immediately gun you down.. there's a reason why a lot of pre-combat cutscenes in ME3 has the camera elegantly weave around Shepard finding a cover). So, wrong squad combo means a simple battle will just drag on and your squadmate or you die a lot. I have no time for that!

In ME1, its pretty straightforward to get a balanced squad (they're on the Squad menu), basically you can bring them everywhere and get that nifty squad achievement plus power ups.

Power-only squad will work effectively with Soldier-class Shepard. Liara and Tali is the best combo for Soldier Shepard. While Ashley and Liara/Tali is the best combo for Engineer/Adept Shepard. And ME1's Soldier and Adept life is a hassle when you forgot to bring Decryption-capable squad when you found a loot.

For Sentinel, Wrex and Garrus are best combat buddies. Sentinel don't have weapon specialization unless you make them as bonus power (although I prefer Singularity over weapon bonus). But I always get irritated by everyone shooting walls and pushing them from a spot just so they could have better view of the enemy.

Kaidan is the permanent squad for Vanguard and Infiltrator. His tech/biotic is limited so he's relatively ineffective if you play as Sentinel/Soldier/Adept/Engineer (ineffective doesn't mean useless. its just you're nerfing your squad) but with Vanguard and Infiltrator, he compensate what that two class lack in combat. For me, its mostly Kaidan+Wrex for Infiltrator and Kaidan+Garrus for Vanguard. Kaidan+Wrex are both brutal together as biotic support and canon-fodder... and I would be sitting at the back with sniper rifle and watch them make everything fly. Its different with Vanguard since you're supposed to take in Wrex's role and Garrus's combat style aren't exactly flashy and he didn't like close combat.

Of course in ME2, things are a bit different since its more effective if you choose your squadmate based on the enemy you're expecting. And in ME3, basically every Shepard's class was overpowered but I usually gauge squad effectiveness during boss fights through multiple combo blasts. Kaidan simply ace at ALL biotic/cryo/tech blast. He's worthy as a Spectre for that reason alone.

Besides, if you're attached to one of them as your trilogy's LI, you're likely to stick with them as your permanent squadmate. More content and stuff. And your LI should be your soul mate in any combat situation. That's how they fall in love dammit!

I played Vanguard, using my pistol, medium defenses, and basic biotics.

Yes: Kaidan, Liara, Tali

-Tali was my container opener until I felt Kaidan and/or Liara could handle it.

-Liara just seemed pretty central to a lot of things (I picked her up early) and I wasn't bothered by her so she stayed.

-Kaidan was first an attempt to be ready for M/M romance (pre-ME3), and now he's literally setup for it. So he's around the vast majority of the time.

No: Ashley, Garrus, Wrex

-Ashley was used sometimes, off and on. I don't hate her, but I do sacrifice her at Virmire and I try to not get too attached.

-Garrus is barely the bro to me that he was to others (even in ME1). I used him once in a while, but with long stretches in between.

-I'm cool with Wrex, maybe even the most of these three, and when I feel like my team is weak against something I may bring him in, but I have little love for him as well. I'm also a Vanguard and don't need another.

So I guess my answer is: Kaidan, Liara.

-Vanguard

-Sentinel

-Adept

= 0.5 combat, 2.0 biotics, 0.5 tech.

Occasionally combat and tech get more and the team is more equal, if I use characters like Tali or one of the other 3.

First game? Team Dextro all the way.

Second, I tend to alternate in Miranda with Garrus, until Tali comes along to take the Cerberus cheerleader's place.

Third is much like second, except with Liara as the replaceable.

Since I play mostly easier difficulties (I like just enjoying the story), I usually take who I like more (or I pick depending on the fighting style I want). Which basically is mostly Kaidan and Garrus in ME1, Jack and Garrus/Thane in ME2 (with the occasional Grunt here and there), and Kaidan (EDI before getting him) + Vega in ME3.

Depends on the missions, for ME I made 3 squads; Liara and Garrus, Wrex and Tali, Ash and Kaidan. Sometimes I would mix the first two but I rarely took the third squad out. In the overall trilogy the most used buddies were Garrus, Liara and Tali (I miss you Wrex), Jack, Grunt, Thane and Kasumi in ME2 (beside G&T), EDI and Javik in ME3 (beside G,T&L).

I try to be "reasonable".

At starting parts Kaidan and Ashley, because while other races stab us in our backs these two are only ones i can trust.

Then at some point Garrus or Wrex replaces Ashley depending on my morality/missions. I understand her frusturation against aliens, that goes deeper than simple "racist" hatred  but i have a team, their morale and trust is more important than invidiuals. (As Renegade Kaidan goes, Ash is around)

Before Benezia part i tend to bring Liara with me(Call it a "bullying"  Benezia or "trying to negotiate" with her depending on my morality) so Kaidan goes this time.(As renegade Ashley goes this time)

So after about 50% of the game passed i stick to Garrus/Wrex and Liara.

Not only they're great individuals but also it shows that humans can work with other races very well.

I sometimes would like to bring Ashley/Kaidan aswell but i think they're better at the ship. Even as paragon it is an Alliance ship and has passengers of so many races. Better to leave someone i can trust there in case something happens.

Paranoia? Council said same to me before, see what happened?!1 :P

I always take Kaidan on every mission (favorite companion). For the other squad member it depends on the mission, although i end up using Garrus and Wrex more than the others.

Wrex. Easily my favourite character in the game. Damn near unkillable, and always good for a laugh. The only reason I've not got him with Shepard on my current run is that I want the acihevements for Turian and Asari friend.

Also a big fan of Garrus.

Garrus because Garrus, and Tali because she's adorable (plus the engineering abilities...)

And Wrex is right there too.

I love my squad! And for those Tali haters out there, I can understand why you feel the way you do for ME1, but she does get better in the following games!

I go for the characters with the most abilities - Liara and Tali. They're like nukes. I spam their skills at start of every fight to give me an edge, and usually that fight is over before we run out of abilities. The only enemies giving me grief are the damn resurrecting krogan.

What's a bae?

Anyway, favourite team is Tali/ Wrex. Shotguns are the best weapons for squadmates because of Carnage. The former covers boxes and Mako repairs if I am playing a Soldier or combat focussed infiltrator (my favorite setups), and both are quite survivable (useful because of derpy ME1 squadmate AI becomes very noticable on insanity and the inability to order them to seperate positions). They get in the enemy's face and shove a shotgun down it's throat while I bring the hurt from range most of the time. They have useful talents for a wide variety of enemies, and it doesn't hurt that they are my favourite characters in this game as well  :) .

Garrus gets a good amount of use from midgame on as well, mostly on geth missions where a tech team absolutely annihiliates, and he gets brought along for Illos> endgame along with Tali pretty much every time now (roleplaying reasons, mostly). Early game though, he's a bit too squishy and doesn't have the same utility as Tali does in performing essentially the same role.

The other 3 are more situational. Ash simply isn't very useful in comparison to Wrex due to only having weapon powers, though I like the character and bring her on side missions quite a bit (she gets a bit more uptime in ME3 if she's the one around). Kaidan and Liara's biotics trivialize the game far too much for my liking, and I also don't like the fact that they don't have weapons training in ME1 as being quite videogamey (or in general that they didn't include some military or other training background for Liara). Liara gets brought along to Noveria most of the time.

Otherwise I would not endanger a little girl that can so easily die from a cut in her clothes, much less bring her to a battlefield.

Then it's probably a good thing that you're exaggerating. Tali is 22 years old in ME1 and quarians don't actually "die from cuts in [their] clothes" that easily. Beyond infections that would result from injuries that are probably fatal in and of themselves simply due to physical trauma, any injury serious enough to kill her is probably going to kill anyone that isn't Wrex due to his redundant physiology, in particular the humans and asari in the squad who are less physically resilient than quarians by nature. ;)

ME1: Garrus. He was the constant for most missions. I found his mix of tech and weapon talents to be pretty useful to support my Vanguard. The other slot got swapped out a lot depending on the story, like, Tali didn't go with me unless it was to fight geth. Though in the end, Liara ended up filling the other slot, because in ME1 she's pretty much a biotic goddess.

ME2: Miranda and Garrus, which is easily my favorite combo.

ME3: Garrus again. He and James go on every N7 mission, and he's basically on every main story mission all the way up to the beam run.
