It seems to be randomly dropped by lower level Darkspawn in various locations, at times bandits will drop it as well, there are Bandits in The Hinterlands that will drop it along with Highever Weave, I think. I'd also recommend looking around in Crestwood. If you haven't yet checked out Valammar in The Hinterlands, you should, there should be Darkspawn there and they will drop Plaideweave (keep in mind that not all will), you'll have to retrieve a key in order to access Valammar, however. The Stormcoast is a good place too, up until you close the, uh, holes that the Darkspawn come out of they will just keep respawning and sometimes drop Plaideweave.

I already checked out Valammar, it was during the Well, ****., quest for Varric and there were a few Hurlocks (most Carta), and I only got 5 Plaideweave during the entire thing. I'll check out the Stormcoast and Crestwood. I don't think there are any Darkspawn in Crestwood though  so how will I find it there?

Cloth is problematic in DA:I. All other resources can be gathered easily from readily respawning nodes, cloth takes a lot of hunting and once you've cleared out an area (e.g. removed the Venatori threat), the mobs are even scarcer. We need a cloth gathering mission on the wartable.

Not all of it will be dropped by Darkspawn. I included that it will also be randomly dropped by bandits. I should have clarified more, my bad. You can also occasionally find it in sacks with other crafting materials... considering that it's a 'common cloth' it shouldn't be so difficult to obtain, but unfortunately it is, same with Silk Brocade, I looove Silk Brocade but it's so hard to find.

As Toxicity mentioned above, Plaidweave can also be found in cloth sacks.  So, you should be able to farm a location like the Cradle of Sulevin.  Fast travel there, search thru the sacks and take any Plaidweave.  If you leave at least 1 item in any container, you can farm that container by fast traveling somewhere else and then returning.  For example if there are 3 items in a cloth sack and you take only 1, that sack will have up to 3 items the next time you return to its location.  However, if there is only 1 item in a container and you take that 1 item the container will be empty the next time you return to its location.  Generally, you should leave at least 1 item in any container you plan on farming for materials, schematics (T3 especially) unless the 1 item is something really good and worth giving that container up for...

There is a cloth gathering WT mission. You need to capture Suledin Keep in Emprise du Lion to get it.

Seriously? I did capture SK but I can't recall the mission showing up. Was it patched in or something? In any case, thanks!

Though it won't help with low-level cloths.

SK adds two missions: Gather Cloth and Gather Leather. These have been there from day one.

The Gather Cloth mission doesn't yield plaidweave, though. If you send Cullen, he brings back velveteen. If you send Josie, she brings back ring velvet. If you send Leliana, she brings back plush fustian velvet. All of those mats give + Attack, which is great, but it doesn't really do much for your crafting options. It's a pity there's no cloth merchant with infinite T1/T2 stock, like they have for leather. Yeah, they draper in Val Royeaux has cotton, silk, and velveteen, but there's no merchant who carries any other cloth. And let's not talk about the T3 cloths. Once you've taken Suledin Keep and finished A Quarry Quandary, good luck finding Dales Loden Wool.

The wiki pretty much says it - loot drops

The clothing store in Val Royeaux useless -only the junk you can get easily and very early in the game.

Whenever I need some fabric or leather early in the game, I just farm those loot sacks in Fallow Mire. There's several sack around each beacon and easily farmable. The second and last beacon seems to be the best ones of the whole bunch.

Sorry, this may be going a bit OT, but... how do you 'farm' those loot sacks? Loot, teleport to another area, come back, loot again? or is it a save/reload thing?

I think you can do either. The main thing seems to be getting the game to load the map again, probably easier to just hop between the area and Skyhold though.

For individual beacon, I just save a small distance away and reload if the sacks don't give what I want, and go each beacon the same way. When I've gone through all of them, I leave the map and come back and start over again. Those sacks give you pretty much anything if you're patient enough; leather, fabric, metal and herbs.  Oh, and the cabin next to the Skywatcher also has 3 sacks, which I also farm while I'm at it and those 2 sacks against a rock before the last beacon. :)

Of course darkspawn are wearing plaidweave. After all, they had to give it to some common enemy, and the undead are disqualified. Everyone knows dead men don't wear plaid.
