I think an exception to this rule is when all the lore seems to state that something isn't a coincidence, but then you get new lore saying it might have been after all.
If the world of Thedas was real, and you were a mage, would you want to be free?

that's not what we have, we have proof the Magisters found and used the Blight from Corypheus himself, and there's no reason to think it's a coincidence that the First Blight started with no input from the Magisters who breached the Black City.
Coincidences are pretty rare in fiction

While I don't want to interrupt the Divine discussion going on, I'd like to slip a question regarding templars and free mages in here in the hope that someone is willing to give me their interpretations of what the comments (both made by Morrigan in DA:O) mean.
-"The templars would come again and she would look at me and smile and say that the fun was to begin once more." [she= Flemythal]
-"A little girl to scream and run and lure the templars deeper into the Wilds and to their doom." [Morrigan's role in the fun and games]
Is there anyone willing to guess on what sort of "fun"?
Does "doom" = "death" or is it a more spiritual doom, or doom of faith? Were they killed or broken?
All opinions or interpretations are welcome and appreciated.
I think she killed them, violently.

If I was in Tevinter, I would like to be "free," as in, I would not want to be a slave
If I was anywhere else in Thedas? I would like to go to the Circle. If I was born to parents who did not want to send me, I'd report myself to the nearest chantry to go to the Circle.
If I lived in a Thedas where the College of Enchanters was created? I would go to the Chantry and learn from the Loyalists. Being associated with the Chantry would give me more good will with the commoners than a new organization with little outside funding or oversight.
If I lived in a Thedas where Leliana became Divine, I would freely go to Tevinter.

They do and are infected with the Taint that creates the creatures whose only thought is to serve Dumat and his siblings.
Years later, Dumat is free.
That hás all the makings of a coincidence.

Yeah, Dumat orders the Seven to breach the Golden City.

That hás all the makings of a coincidence.
Dumat is free... and warped into an insane monster. That doesn't strike me as the sort of service he'd ask for.

Many thanks, Steelcan and Lady Artifice. Dead as a door nail templars seems the most reasonable of assumptions about Morrigan's comments. Inspired recently to think about it, sometimes I like to imagine that "fun" means playing with the doomed templars a little bit first - like a cat playing with mice before the feast. Perhaps that's just a twist in my imagination, though.
And I've even imagined that perhaps Morrigan and her sister(s) were sired by doomed templars who went mage hunting and never returned to their post. That would be a rich fictional irony given the templar attitude voiced by Cullen in DA2.
[Regarding a templar's purpose] “It is a losing battle. Every day new mages are born in Thedas. Every day, those born a dozen years ago come into their power. Best we can do is to contain the threat.” - Cullen (quote courtesy of lil yonce)

I'm not sure DA:I supports us inferring the first part. As I recall a codex entry during here lies the abyss suggests that the old gods had gone silent, which is why Corypheus and the others breach the Fade.

That's not exactly right. It says:
Master once laughed and joked. He could be stern, but he was not a cruel man. The weakening of the temples brought fear into his heart, and that fear has changed him. The cuts upon his arms are deeper and longer where he used his blood magic more often. He speaks to his wife little. He listens only to the voices in his dreams.

Possibly. Which contradicts the new World of Thedas vol 2, which shares parts of the Canticle of Silence. The version there claims that Dumat reached out to Cory, who then got the other 6 involved in the plan.
I'm curious as to which is truly correct though.

That's vague, and I think purposely vague. Even if Corypheus isn't a dreamer, it doesn't mean it was the OGs speaking to him.

A personal theory of mine is that it was actually the Nightmare who whispered in Corypheus dreams and convinced him to breach the fade. From all informiation we got so far it seems that the Nightmare was the only one who profited from the outbreak of the blights, since it fueled his power born of fear immensly.

Wouldn´t it be the first one? Second one is usually just a lot of backpedaling.

In Legacy, Corypheus has this line "You promised the power of the gods themselves."
Something talked to him a thousand years ago.

One wonders why Dumat could't just go "I'm down here, start digging."
Unwillingness to admit weakness before a worshipper?
Wanted to destroy the world and needed the Darkspawn to accomplish it?
Wanted the power boost that comes with the Taint?
Entirely unknowable motives due to being, per Chantry lore, the very first living creature the Maker created?

Maybe he just engineered the creation of an entire race of short humans with a petchant for digging large tunnels underground but then got tired of the project going over budget and under delivering.

The Maker created the old gods?
I don't recall that tidbit of lore
It's in the Canticle of Silence.
The Old Gods will call to you, From their Ancient Prisons they will sing. Dragons with wicked eyes and wicked hearts, On blacken'd wings does deceit take flight, The First of My children, lost to night.
