If the world of Thedas was real, and you were a mage, would you want to be free?

I think we have to take anything the Chant says, especially the Canticle of Silence, with a big grain of salt. The Canticle of a Silence especially is meant to have been written Hessarian, likely after his conversion, so his blaming of the Old Gods may have just been because of the transfiguration that was occurring in Tevinter at the time (i.e. The destruction of everything to do with the Old Gods) and is supposed to contradict the story of Threnodies which blames "the voices in their hearts", so not the Old Gods but the pride of the magisters. There's a reason the Canticle of Silence is dissonant.

I mean, all of that makes sense, but its not really good evidence that the Canticle of Silence's story is less reliable than the mainstream Chant's story. Though I agree that none of the Chant at all is really good evidence.

True but I think it's important to think about the bias. Writing that it was all the fault of the Old Gods is basically saying that the "problem existed then but because we've converted it's all fine now", it doesn't really address the systematic corruption in Tevinter. It's not that the Chant has nothing to teach us, obviously it has some truth, but it's full of biases and inaccuracies that need to be taken into account.

All fair.

I'm gullible and I lack impulse control.  I'd be an abomination before I even get the option to choose.
