Just a list of some random questions I have about things I think don't make a lot of sense. Maybe someone can unravel these mysteries for me. Here goes:

Why is the Grey Warden contact in Crestwood?

- he just hides in a cave. In the middle of the area... why is it that the searching Grey Wardens couldn't find him, when he's doing nothing AT ALL to help the people?? Shouldn't he be fighting the demons? Shouldn't we find him at the furthest rift, battling away heroically, ala Grey Warden style? What would have been great, is if he was hiding in the cave BEHIND that dragon (to protect him from the searchers), and the dragon had a large aggro range, so the party would HAVE TO fight it to get him! No that, would have been epic!

Why do I have to go to the Hissing Wastes?

- what happens if I don't? It seems a completely pointless area, not at all connected to anything. I was running around there last night like a headless chicken, thinking 'why?' What would improve this experience is if that dragon actually guarded the tomb of Fariel (ala Smough...), and you HAD TO fight it to get the reward. Make it meaningful! Make it epic! But alas....

Why would Erimond choose to do that ritual at an abandoned unprotected fort in the Western Outreach, when he could have gone to Adamant from the outset? Seems particularly stupid, given that he could have used the GW to protect him there....huge plot hole imo.

Why is the Grey Warden contact in Crestwood?
Because he's hiding from the Grey Wardens. He's the only one not seduced by Erimond's manipulation with what the Calling means. Clarel sent the Wardens to bring him to Erimond and they search for him with little question, thinking Erimond will help them bring and end to the Blight. Any actions of grandeur would get him noticed which is the last thing he wants. (I'm assuming you're talking about Stroud/Alistair/Loghain XD)

I can answer the first question but the others, I don't really know without looking it up. I'm sure there's a reason—it might be insignificant to the main plot but essential to the lore. I don't know. All the places are so beautiful and I enjoy exploring them, especially now that I can jump freely.

1. The Grey Warden contact seems to be travelling all over and laying low. Based on the Grey Warden journal entries in the Storm Coast and the comments of the wardens in Crestwood, it seems he's been leading them on a merry chase and hasn't actually been just hanging out in a cave.

2. You don't HAVE to go to the Hissing Wastes. But there is a large Venatori presence in the area if you want to deal with them. Also there's ancient dwarven ruins that date back to before the First Blight, built directly on the surface. If you're interested in dwarven history or feel like Indiana Jones (plus getting some of the best schematics at the store in the canyon,) then it's for you. It's totally optional, but there's some really good schematics you can loot in the tombs, some really interesting lore, and some of the best armor schematics in the game can be bought at the store.

Plus you can harvest Nevarrite in abundance there.

3. Erimond chose an out of the way ritual tower to do forbidden magics with the Wardens. He was hoping to be out of sight until they summoned a demon army. He wasn't counting on the inquisitor already knowing about the demon army and investigating the wardens.

1. "Battling away heroically ala grey warden style" - This is the words of someone that doesn't really know what the grey wardens are like, no offense. Remember Stroud in DA2? Most Wardens are like that, they either don't care or just don't want to get involved in any problems not related to Darkspawn and the Blight.

2. Yes, The Hissing Wastes is a pointless Zone, Worst in the game Imo.

3. I guess they were trying to keep the mages away from the rank and file to some extent, Because if they were to discover how they were completely possessed that would pretty much Shatter Erimonds plans.
That and because the plot dictates it thus, Its not like you can walk into their fortress and discover what their up to that way.

Those two Wardens at the beginning of Crestwood were probably scared of getting rekt by the rift demons, wild dogs, undead, etc., and ran out with their tails between their legs. I dunno. Don't really care. Stroud, though, he's a cool dude.

I assume the reason they make you go to Crestwood first, is to ease you into your first dragon fight.

Regarding the Hissing Wastes, I go there as soon as I possibly can, after reaching Skyhold. Why? For the tier 3 materials, and the Masterwork Dual Curved Blade schematics (as well as the superior versions for each class of armor from the shop). And, lots of XP from enemies who have to scrape a bit of my Inquisitor off their boots from time to time.

You don't have to go there at all, but I always do. The lure of good crafting is something I can't easily ignore.

Regarding the last question, I don't know. I suppose they probably wanted to save Adamant for later in the MQ.

1. As others have mentioned doing heroics like that would call attention when he's trying to hide out. Plus the Wardens main job is to dispose of darkspawn, everything else is if they really feel like it.
And fighting a dragon just to get to him would be a little unnecessary but that's just IMO since I saved most dragons for a after the main story thing. I'd rather not fight them if I don't have to tbh: Dragons are so majestic.

2. Hissing Wastes was a total waste of time save for a few perks of materials and junk. If we didnt have mounts I wouldnt have even bothered. If I wasn't such a completionist I'd skip it so, no, I don't think you'll miss too much.

3. He was cocky perhaps? Figured no one would find him or get past the feral animals/White Fangs (or whatever they're called) or maybe he just wanted to save the really nice place for the final event.. I probably would.
