My guess is that your friend didn't feel like the gameplay was realistic enough and wanted to use tacky and animeish to descripe unrealness of it.
'Realistic' is a curious term in a game with dragons, demons and such...

You should probably be taking criticism from people who's never played the game themselves with a grain of salt. They can say all they want but seeing is way different from experiencing. They have one of the better UI's and their combat style, although faulty, has really improved from the first game. I think he'd also appreciate it far more if he started with the previous entries 'cause I actually enjoy building my characters now.
