And where does Andraste fall into all of this? Was she tricked by the OG to start a holy war and bring chaos to Thedas?

Or maybe was just like the Inquisitor - caught up in some plot that was later re-written as a religious narrative.

Who knows. Maybe 500 years from now someone will write about how our Inquisitor was in a polyamorous relationship with Andraste and the Maker.

Well there is the theory that she was an OGB born with Dumat/Mythal soul whisp. Now whether she was tricked by Mythal at any point (if this theory is true) is anyone's guess.

Interesting factoid (a fictional factoid, but...bah) adding to the post above - Andraste was born the same year Dumat was killed. Always found that interesting...!

But then why would Andraste start a "new" religion?  Wouldn't she be under the influence of Dumat to keep the OG notion alive and well?

You mean like how Flemeth and Kieran are going around proclaiming their divinity? For all we know, the OGs don't care about being worshipped. Heck for all we know, Andraste didn't actually believe in the maker and she just used the stories about him as a rallying call for her campaign to take down the TI.

I see your point.  Thanks!

If Andraste was a mage like the Tevinter people believe, then the whole myth takes on a whole new sense with the fact that she was approached by this 'Maker' in her dreams and offered power etc if she spread word of the Maker and gave him glory etc etc; sounds very much like a Pride demon or something of the sort to me....

We don't know if Andraste actually wanted to start a new religion. For all we know she just kept chatting up Dumat and people assumed that was the "Maker", and she - being actually a cunning villainess set on conquest - decided to take advantage of their gullibility.

Again, it's not like the Inquisitor needs to be religious to - through intertia and other's belief - become a semi-divine figure.

I just got back into Dragon Age so I don't know if anyone has considered this one before, but my crack theory is that Andraste was actually trying to create a force capable of ending the Blight. If belief shapes and empowers spirits living in the fade, what would happen if the Chant of Light was successfully spread throughout the world? If every dreaming being in Thedas truly believed that the time had come for the Maker to return and end the Blight forever how powerful could a spirit of faith that embodies that belief become?

It's cracky but works very well with my other favorite theories that the uncorrupted old gods are being used to seal the blight in the Black City. And that is why Solas freaks out over the Grey Wardens trying to kill them prematurely. Every time one gets tainted and killed the Blight (or Void) gets that much closer to being unleashed unchecked to devour everything. Hunting them down and killing them would just hasten that along.

This also works well with the idea that Andraste was an Old God Baby of Dumat, and it wasnt the Old Gods speaking to the Tevinter Magisters.

The preview pages of World of Thedas Vol 2 on Amazon hint that Andraste wasn't an OGB but her sister, Halliserre, was probably one. And then something happened when Halliserre died that provoked a sudden radical change in Andraste, both mentally and physiologically.

I also suspect that the Throne of the Maker in the Black City was probably the Throne of Andruil, back when it was still in the Physical Realm.

There are a lot of similarities between Korth the Mountain-Father and Andruil, and between Korth's seat on top of Belenas and the Black City. Basically if you merge Avvar Lore with Elven Lore, Andruil ruled over the lands on top of mount Belenas, and she brought the Blight back to "Her Lands" from her journeys into the Abyss, turning it into the Black City.

Mythal fought Andruil, Belenas was destroyed, and the Black City was quarantined into the Fade.

I wrote about this on reddit the other day, I thought some of you guys might be interested.
