It appears from the previous posts that its a problem specific for the 3800 series (I have a HD 4800 and the game plays fine).

I would however like to offer a suggestion.
I know everyone will say "make sure you have the latest drivers installed" but I have at times had problems caused by installing the latest drivers.

With that said could I suggest that you guys try using the 8.12 Catalyst drivers.
support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/8-12/Pages/radeonaiw_vista32.aspx
These drivers have been around for some time and have proven to be very stable for a lot of gamers.
I am presently using them and they run DA:O, Drakensang, Crisis, Sacred 2, etc, etc.

I know its a PITA to completly wipe drivers and then reinstal them, but it might just help.

The latest is not always the best ;)

I will back this up by saying my ATI HD2900 Pro has no issues running the game. So certaintly sounds like an issue with the 3800 series.

Anyone have a link to older 64-bit Vista/Windows 7 ATI 3870 drivers? The one for the 8.12 only links to 32-bit drivers as far as i can tell. I've tried going as far back as 9.7 with no success.

I'm willing to try anything at this point - whatever the issues are between ATI/AMD and BioWare/EA, I just wish they'd figure something out. Yes, the 3870 line appears to be problematic in some way, but the fact that this happens (for me) only after I arrive at Ostagar makes me think it isn't simply a driver issue but the result of the way something is coded in the game itself. Or it's a combination of the drivers and the game programming.

Before I found this thread, I created a thread with more details on my situation here, just in case something in my description might help to diagnose this:

I'm wondering if there could be something that's causing the videocard to go into a sleep mode of some sort - the screen goes black (and the entire screen does this even if you play DA:O in a smaller window), but one can still hear sound effects, music, etc. playing. So the entire computer isn't locking up, just the videocard.

Gonna try the RivaTuner fix tonight and see if that works for me.

Nope, the RivaTuner fan boost didn't help.
