Totally agree on that point.

I don't want to see ME:Next pitting us against the 'Not-Reapers' of Andromeda, nor do I want to see a rehash of resolved story arcs. Make the plot about a band of refugees struggling to survive in an alien environment. There is no need to try and top the Reapers, or have the PC going out to be the chosen savior of humanity; especially when something as trivial as a ruptured O2 tank would spell the end for all people trying to flee to the new galaxy.

I suppose I should have also mentioned that, since we had to literally figure out how to put humpty-dumpty back together again (the mass relays), there's a possibility that we have a mission where we build a mass relay that links back to the Milky Way.  We would have acquired working knowledge of how the relays functioned during reconstruction.  This arc would then put us in the odd situation of potentially being the extragalactic invaders rather than the saviors/defenders.  I'd be interested to see how they would resolve this with those who prefer paragon-style characters.

Yeah...

Well, if the leak is genuine, they've already done at least one definite rehash.

Namely the vanished, ancient alien race.

There is no reason to have any character from the trilogy to show up in the next game. Have all new characters. If talking with someone in the Milky Way via QEC, have it be a character that has never been seen before

There's equally little reason to not have them, if possible given the timeline and the capacity for intergalactic communication.

Why?

Why should there be cameos for past characters?

It'd be funny if they included them as part of an arcade mini-game

Been away mostly, but oh hell, is it still looking like another galaxy? Talk about lack of imagination considering the size of this one (200 - 400 billion stars), plenty of room to get lost in even if you want to do your best to avoid any connection to ME3 events. If they're that desperate they may as well just create a new franchise without all the baggage, since other than the crew and background technology (just a means of moving the story on anyway) it looks like that's what they're trying to do.

I am not at all optimistic.

How many individuals would there be in the galaxy? Even if you're sticking with important people the odds of having any reason to have anything to do with any of them, at least below the level of Councillor / planetary government figure for a major race are negligable. Unbelievably unlikely encounters just make the universe feel too small (as it is I get the impression that some of the writers view the entire galaxy as about as big and heavily-populated as  a small village).

Has anyone actually read what folks were requesting when Casey started asks fans about the next ME?  There was a lot of, "Avoid the endings, move to another galaxy" posts in there, along with "If we go back to the Milky Way, you'd be too tempted to reuse the Citadel over and over again."  Granted, some of those were pre-EC, so what might have been the case then might not work as well now that we have the EC to go by.  There was also a ton of, "Make a canon ending please" in there and occasionally from what I read, it still pops up from time to time, though everyone knows that's it done too late now.   :P

This forum isn't as bad as some have told it me was (it looks better than it used to be a couple of years ago,) but this is probably the one of the most divided fan bases I've ever seen that's not terribly unfriendly these days.  You guys for the most part are very nice, but, to horribly mangle Samara's words due to a lack of sleep, if there was only three of you into the same thread, I'd get to read 9 opinions (7 that are thoughtful, one that's has some quote problems due to being on a mobile device, and at least one that's a gif.)  I can say that you all are fun to read, and I feel like I've been absorbing some neat perspectives on the series.  The love that many fans still have for the series despite their feelings on the endings (especially for the pre-EC folks) does show through even with threads like this one.   :)

So we're so desperate to sever connections between Shepard's trilogy and MENext that we're willing to write off the Milky Way galaxy and move to Andromeda

But we also want cameos from past characters.

And on that note, I'm gonna go back to lurking in this thread again.   I'm open to the idea either way, but I also don't feel like I have much room to talk.  I don't have the years worth of investment that many of you guys have.   I didn't suffer through the pre-EC debacle or the Tali sweat threads or any of that.

Spoiler

Past party members are definitely not needed in the next installment although I could see one or two of the more obscure characters from the Citadel showing up.

I would think that the mission to leave the Milky Way galaxy would have been a top secret side project that was put in motion as a failsafe in case they lost the war. Shepard and co. would not have had a clue that the project even existed because they were too busy with their own business of trying to save the galaxy.

I got into the series last April, so I missed out on all of it.  I did hear about the pre-EC uproar back in 2012, but you had to be living under a rock in the gaming community if you didn't hear about that.  :P

Fighting the good fight with baked goods.  Despite the rest of the silliness, that was a moment of awesome from the fans.

I believe that is called fan pandering.

Considering how most fans mark out for that now a days, I have a feeling it will happen with some characters depending on the timeline and story.

Already been confirmed that there will be references to the original trilogy and "familiar faces" in this new game.

I myself never said I wanted to move anywhere, I more or less hate the idea but I don't want to go on about it.

Indeed they'd be much better off staying in the galaxy instead, Bioware will have to explain what happened to the MW sooner or later.

Oh but some will go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on because they are desperate for it/not to be true.

And there is nothing wrong with that. They are allowed to express their opinions just as much as those who like the idea are.

Bioware's goal is to end Shepard with Mass Effect 3. If they truly want a new game they should and must not in anyway go with the ark theory at all because that theory is an attempt to be an indirect sequel which is problematic... it has unforeseen consequences and plot holes like the Milkyway suddenly becoming a huge mystery [and please don't bring up the extended cut explanation because it did not explain anything].

The best way to move the franchise forward is to start from scratch. RESTART THE MILKYWAY in a fresh state

will it be a monumental task to start explaining how the mass relays work all over again? what about the Council races? NO... They are the writers! do something! create a new means of transportation this is Mass Effect 4 not 3! change the history of these races in Mass Effect 4 the hell do I care

Will it be an alternate spin off universe? No, the right term will be A RESTART many RPG games does this i.e. Final Fantasy and Zelda Games to name a few. The mechanics are intact i.e. Space, Space guns and vehicles, N7 Program, Aliens and galaxies

Then give us Andromeda after the story of the new "hero" we can then move on to Andromeda.

Restart as in reboot? As in the Shepard Trilogy never happened?

That would be the absolute worse choice they could make, in my opinion.
