Honestly, I really don't. You said it yourself, you played many games where you're a human, that shouldn't be a problem or anything like that. It's a common thing, after all, you're human.

This is now a matter of personal taste, but I can't bring myself to play anything else than a human in roleplaying games. In DAO, it was always the human noble. It's the only origin where I feel comfortable to command the PC, it feels natural, no doubt, so forcing me to play, let' say, as a Turian, I would probably let it pass. Heck, even when it comes to romance it works like that, sure, the personality pays a huge deal as well, but so does the looks, and I can't "feel" (lol) the Aliens.

I have no quarrel with people who wish a race selector, if Bioware makes one, which is very unlikely, at least with the main Mass Effect game, I'll be fine with it, as long we don't lost content like most of the time.

The lack of variety is the problem.

I know it just personal taste, and unlike you I'd feel completely fine as Krogan because I'm already very much like Wrex in reality so RPing a tough yet smart PC is what I already do in RPG's Krogan fit my playstyle despite looking different. So if Krogan was available in game I could easilly play that species, Turian too but I'm much closer to Krogan in mentality.

No problem, point taken :)

I just want the race options to fit the story (which it didn't in all ME games so far. The story is centered on humanity's push into the stars...then later, Harbinger's obsession with humans. Being a Turian defeats the purpose). Don't care what the race is once the story is decided.

Would be nice as opposed to playin generic space marine number 500 and eighty billion.
Although Mac Walters involvement and the overall decreasimg quality of Mass Effect since the second game has made me not care regardless.0

I am continually baffled as to why so many players think that if you take a dullard human character and make him an alien or a elf he becomes interesting.

Well, I want a Batarian Mad Max game...

But I doubt that'd sell well.

Better to get used to it. You won't be disappointed later on.

That's a rather odd way of interpreting that particular discussion.

I actually agree with babypuncher. If it's like DAI, then it's a bit shallow. If it's like DAO or most RPGs, then you get to start up in a whole world of it's own. Even an MMO like WoW does this better than DAI (which is saying something, since I loathe MMOs). New races aren't that cool unless they have a unique backdrop or the story is centered around some part of their culture. It's pointless if they just act like humans and are overly concerned with human affairs. It doesn't make them interesting if they just look different.

The tired presumptions that people seem to have that additions like racial choices, or multiplayer, is ultimately what caused the overall game's quality to decline is rather annoying. Mass Effect 3 was a bad game as far I'm concerned along with ME2, and that wasn't because of the introduction of multiplayer, nor do I believe racial choices in Inquisition is the reason why the story wasn't all that engaging (I liked the game myself more than any of those Mass Effect sequel).

Also, it's interesting you're using Origins as an example of how to do it, given there's literally no larger significance in that game either outside of the origin stories. Perhaps it's the lack of origin stories that people seem to dislike so much? If that's the case then I find that rather odd -- It's not like Shepard had any origin story either with any overall significance to her character, he/she is just the same generic space marine, conversing entirely through lame platitudes and inspiring military courage in an exaggerated grunt-gruff voice that would make David Hayter take a step back.

I don't agree that the protagonist can't be interesting, if she's an Asari, unless it partially centers around said race's culture -- I didn't need to hear an over long exposition on the Malkavians' place in the world in Bloodlines in order for me to like my character. It's entirely dependent on the story, and I don't believe race factors into that any more than I believe gender would.

I don't need the game to constantly remind that I am a woman for me to be engaged by my character, if she happens to be female -- I don't believe that's actual basis enough to ask "why don't you just play a male bloke then?". That doesn't hold stick.

If it's going to be done like in DAI then no. You were basically a human cosplaying as a dwarf, elf or qunari. Sometimes poeple remembered you were cosplaying and commented so you'd give an answer "in character" but I didn't feel like I was truly a member of any of the other species. The only times when they've done it right in my opinion is in DAO and SWToR.

Maybe if the selection is limited to human, asari and turian it might work (they're the most human like in culture and behaviour) but I'd rather they didn't. For the few images we've seen* we know the protagonist is human, the only other species that would fit under that armor would be the batarians and asari.

So I'm suspecting that it's going to be human only.

*I don't have the link but they did show on a panel the images of an armor for the protagonist and there was a male and female version. It's from the same video that that mako footage.

There doesn't have to be a large significance in DAO later, because the story is centered on blights and Wardens. A very general premise. The origins are good there for roleplaying purposes though. And gives it some personal angle. You have friends and clans and people to care about... you're not just some bum dragged out of a ditch. In DAI, the story isn't general like blights and wardens. It's more speciific (Chantry and Orlesian politics).

I don't know what multiplayer has to do with anything I said though. I have nothing against it.

The Blight and Wardens aren't any less of a "general premise" as you chose to phrase it than Mages & Templars was in Inquisitions -- But I do see now that I was right that it's the lack of origin stories which has people like yourself soiling themselves over the whole racial angle, which of course I find rather odd but very well.

The multiplayer has a lot to do with the discussion going on here, as it is an example of a scapegoat that people need to blame for the decline in quality overall game. I think there was at least one poster on one of the previous pages who chose to use the whole "resource angle" as the bases for his argument. If it isn't the addition of multiplayer, then it's racial choice, then it's this and that, it's baseless strawman arguments where people like to cast blame that "resources" were wasted by implementing this and that mechanic. Or perhaps that game was just bad, because you can't win them all. At least, that's what I like to think.

Really? Because it seems to me the obvious and inevitable interpretation of that discussion.

Fantastic. Since you agree that it doesn't really make a difference, it should be incredibly clear why investing significant resources in animation and modeling and so forth for this feature might not be a very smart idea?

You seem to be having a lot of trouble differentiating between the standpoints of "I don't see why being an alien makes the protagonist compelling in a story where the protagonist's race is not going to be significantly addressed." and "I don't want the protagonist to be an alien." They're quite different. I would welcome, say a mandatory Asari protagonist if a compelling story was written to back it up.

What are you talking about? I agreed with babypuncher in an off comment and suddenly I'm "soiling myself"?  I don't even care about DAI that much. That's why I'm here and not over there.

I'll be here if you decide to actually talk to me. I don't know why you're bringing multiplayer into it... or why I'm soiling myself. It sounds like you have some extra baggage with this topic, and I don't want anything to do with it. Take it up with the actual people annoying you.

I think you're reading too much into what I said. I apologize if I offended you. Not really the intention.

I already explained the reasoning for the whole multiplayer angle, and how it relates to this. If that's not good enough then I'm sorry I wasted both our time.

I'm a fan of customization in games, I don't see it as insignificant even if the game doesn't take the time to implement it into a careful considerate story context. I drew a perspective towards that of gender as well as I thought it was relevant. Like, I don't need the game to constantly remind me "Hello, you're a woman" to be engaged from a role-playing perspective, nor do I believe that beckons the question "Why do we even have the choice of gender in the first place?" in a somewhat similar fashion to that of race as well.

Anyway, I shouldn't have entered this argument since I don't have time for it now, but we don't really seem to disagree in long terms. So I'll leave it here for now.

I'm a fan of customization too. I just want stories to fit that game mechanic.. instead of the other way around. If this is the route some developer goes, they should write a story premise around why it is that way. Take this new ME story, for example.. For the time being, it's very open ended. It could be anything it seems. I have no idea how humanity ties into it. With the other Mass Effects though, that was a very human centric story. There's no basis for another kind of protagonist. The first is all about humaniy's push to be recognized among the Council, about being the first human Spectre, the second is mingling with the darker elements of humanity (Cerberus) and Harbinger kidnapping humans that no one else cares about... etc..

Here

And here your being a selfish bloody hypocrite. And here's why their are people out there who feel the exact opposite to you just because you're in the majority who play humans only in games you get your content no matter what bloody games you buy where as the minority of us have to beg and plead our case you even said it your self you would be pissed of if you had too play a non human only game but some how when the minority feels the same the majority say we're being silly and say humans are easier to relate too but I personally (Now this is me I don't know how many others out there feel the same but I Loathe humanity) but there's a minority that if games didn't have other races then They probably would have no interest in playing those games hell I know quite a few people who feel that way. But just because it may take away from the resources from your game why does that mean that the minority misses out on what could be an amazing game for all of us? I see a lot of people saying but inquisition was terrible with the extra races cause it took away resources to make something that I don't enjoy but then there are people like me who those little re-skins as some people call them meant the world to us so please stop trying to drown us out of a game that we all could enjoy "sigh" that's all I've got take it as you will it just saddens me too see this kind of thing but oh well.

First, I will take your snarky remarks as someone who's butthurt because you aren't going to play as an Alien.

Second, I'm not doing anything to you guys who support a race change, stop being a crybaby just because of it, I explained my reasons to StealthGamer and he understood them as I understood his, so I get some of you, but not playing the next ME because you're going to be a human, like you always were, is incredibly stupid,. This is not Dragon Age. Just because one series did something doesn't mean the other should do the same as well.

Please no more only humans like Shepard.

We already play 3 games in ME universe as human who work for alliance and cerber, ME have a rich universe so please do not make us be only humans when it have much more.

Give us Quarians(healthy) and others who are human like so this is not be really hard to make them playable and make their dialogues and cut-scenes with them.

Would love to see this happen, but I know there is little chance it will happen. The most I'm hoping for is that the game isn't completely revolving around humanity like the last two games.
