I figured a little more theoretical nuance went into the travel-time calculation than straightforward 1:1 conversions, since you're going to have to overhaul ... well, basically everything on the ships for this experimental road trip into uncharted space.

I lol at all the Mass Effect = Milky Way comments in the other threads

No, no it doesn't.

Andromeda has no Citadel, none of the homeworlds+planets we know, no Mass Relays etc. That kind of stuff is what partly makes up Mass Effect.

Mass Effect is about the setting, the characters, and the races. Andromeda, and quite frankly no other galaxy, has everything that made the Shepard trilogy Mass Effect. Of course Mass Effect = Milky Way. Does BioWare really need to spell that out?

Mass Effect as we know it is the Milky Way. Doesn't mean they can't expand beyond that.

They can't move all the stuff that made Mass Effect what it is out into another Galaxy can they? Sure they can move SOME of the races across, but we're going to lose all the key locations and stuff from the original trilogy.

It's like if in the new Star Wars trilogy, they just got removed lightsabers or hyperdrives or well-known locations etc.

The big things for me are the Citadel and the Mass Relays. The Citadel was literally the centre of Galactic society, getting rid of such a big thing is scary to me. And the Mass Relays are pretty much the foundation of the series, as they're what we use to travel the Galaxy and they're what brought all the different races together.

They certainly can, eventually... Three years exploring 1% of the Milky Way is hardly justification for moving on...

What you're talking about is a comfort zone. Getting out of it doesn't have to be a bad thing.

Mass Effect has always been more than just the Mass Relays and the physical locations. Don't be so dismissive.

"Don't be so dismissive."

Rich coming from the one saying we should just chuck the universe Bioware has spent 8 years building out the window and move into a new Galaxy, essentially rebooting the series.

Why is it bad to have a comfort zone? I enjoy Mass Effect how it is, and getting rid of the things I like about it isn't going to make me like it any more. I'd totally be up for expanding into Andromeda, if the Milky Way was still part of the universe and we could explore both, including areas we're already familiar with and love.

They're expanding the universe, not deleting it. Repeating "might as well be a reboot" doesn't change the facts. We've had our Shepard trilogy, time for a new direction.

So what's wrong with having a new main character in the Milky Way in a different part of the galaxy? Wouldn't you want to see more of the Milky Way?

why not just rename it?

According to these leaks it doesn't seem like MENext will have anything to do with what makes Mass Effect

Its a lame reboot (as expected after those atrocious endings)

Is this a serious question?

Why would they sacrifice the brand recognition of three successful and popular Mass Effect games?

No but they should rename it since its very clear that it won't have much to do with what makes ME, ME

Just another Sci fi game (not that there is anything wrong with that)

So what's wrong with having a new main character in the Milky Way in a different part of the galaxy? Wouldn't you want to see more of the Milky Way?

Been in the Milky Way, seen that, let's move on to something new.

So despite having a backstory that is heavily influenced by their expierences in the Milky Way Galaxy, technology that is still likely based off Reaper tech (at least at first), old prejudices and mistrust caused by their History in the Milky Way, they don't have much to do with ME?

I am going to have to respectfully disagree.

I still stand by my view that it's still Mass Effect as long as they're using mass effect field technology. Biotics and deep space travel. From the very first introduction text on ME1, that was their concept. Although EDI theorizes in ME3 if the laws of the universe would change if you went out far enough, so they may just use that to get rid of the mass effect fields too...

I disagree. We have not even seen 1% of the Milky Way. A lot of relays are left uncharted because the Council forbids their exploration after the Rachni Wars. There can be all sorts of new races and technology out there.

How could one run calculations on fictional physics and engineering?

No, it was merely to counter the claim that was being thrown around that "Andromeda is too long of a journey to reach". Specifically, people were throwing out millennia as an estimate. So I actually calculated it to prove that incorrect.

We discussed hypothetical ways to fix the discharge problem elsewhere.

I also showed that it would be possible to reach Andromeda at relativistic speeds, which is something not yet explored in Mass Effect. Those calculations are more complicated, but still just basic Special Relativity.

exactly so why abandon it?
I really don't get it, they could still retain the ME feel AND have a fresh start that way

Because new intellectual property is not as simple as you might think. It is far, far easier to build on established IP's than to create new ones.

I also disagree that it is a reboot. Taking place in the distant future? Yes. But that doesn't make it a reboot.

For what purpose? what about their own galaxy? wouldn't that make them squatters?

Well they probably seen everything there was to see in there own.

1. Staying in the Milky Way restricts creativity since they have to not only account for the fallout of the endings, but also deal with other issues in a galaxy that could be so vastly changed by those final choices that it may as well be a Galaxy Far Far Away.

2. Moving out of the Milky Way forces the audiences to deal with place that is no longer familiar, to reconsider what they thought they knew, and have no quick and easy route back to familiar space. You are alone, with no calvery coming through the gate to save you if you screw this up.

3. A chance to see how the old races on the whole deal with a new challenges, and introduce technology vastly different from that of the Reapers while still keeping that Reaper tech aesthetic for the MW Races.

4. Having an entire galaxy to expand to in future games provides more options than unopened relays scattered across the Milky Way. It also forces the races to build new colonies without the oversight of the council (for good or ill)

Two reasons I can think of:

1. If the Crucible waves affected the entire galaxy, and I think they probably did, they can't set a game anywhere in the Milky Way without having to deal with the consequences of the endings.

2. If the Crucible waves didn't affect the entire galaxy, then they'd have to set the new game entirely in the bit that was unexplored, otherwise they'd need to deal with the consequences of the endings. People would still be angry that we didn't get to see [place] or meet [favourite character] again.

And if ME Next did take place in the Milky Way, they'd have to confront the endings at some point. How do they possibly do that without stirring up more controversy, ruining headcanons, etc?

There is a way to stay in the same galaxy without having to deal with the choices of the trilogy

Spoiler

It gives a whole new playground without any influence from the Council (and all the other governments)

To clarify, I don't suggest exploring the places we have already seen. This sector of space will be entirely separate from the locations of the trilogy.

Points 2,3,4 still apply here.

The only thing that needs to be addressed is how the wave doesn't reach there. But then again, they need to address intergalactic travel for Andromeda, as well as travel within the new galaxy.

And I don't think that the game set in Andromeda or any other galaxy will necessarily be bad. I just think that going there now is not the best option available to them.

You can't, really, which is why I was interested in seeing the calculations.  But those are rather important variables to consider in the long run, and would destroy credibility if hand-waved to simple 1:1 travel conversions, especially if taking on the task amid the Reaper war.

I think 500 years from the point of starting to reverse-engineer advanced drive cores to touchdowning in Andromeda would be a generous estimate, and I think some of that time would need to occur after the Reaper war.

Eventually, perhaps.

But right now it would take deus ex machina space magic to rival the Crucible to make it happen
