As a girl who played Dragon Age Origins blind and immediately fell in "love" (the embarrassment of getting attached to fictional characters is real xD) with Morrigan and spent the whole game thinking I was romancing her before finding out she was straight and being pretty pissed off about it, all I have to say is:

HA.

I had to re-do my canon PT with Leliana instead, and while I ended up loving the sisterly bond you can form with Morrigan, it was still sad. I remember wondering why they only allowed straight gamers to romance the "most interesting and attractive" character. That was my opinion years ago, I've grown to appreciate Leliana since then :)

It sucks, but if I got over it, you can too! ;)

(to turuzzusapatuttu) I've never played a romance in which I consider my romance's reaction before my character's when it comes to decisions because I feel it cheapens my roleplaying and my character. In Inquisition on my first and primary run, I romanced Solas and I disagreed with him on more than a few things not to mention I choose not to exile the Wardens. It also feels more interesting to me to have a party who works together even if they do not also agree with each other.

(italics to emphasis that this is how it works for me and not judgement on anyone else' playstyles)

Same, I never think about the reaction of the LI and most of the time it works.

The only time it was an absolute disaster was with Sera actually, I had to break up with her because my character values her cultural as a dalish and expects the same respect she gives to other religious people. She even end up question her believes and accepting Andraste and the Maker. My dalish elf, blunt and honest nature did not work with Sera, when people ask her to lie and dismiss her culture it is the end really.

That is why Cass begins has an adversary and end up being her best friend, there is respect in both side. I could even understand the OP on some level because Cass was heterosexual too and that was really disappointing but the tone of the post and the way they write lesbo really irks me to no end.

Seems pretty clear for me. Unless you were under a rock or have really poor social skills associated with ego stroke.

This. A hundred times this. I also romanced Solas, recruited the Wardens, drank from the well, disagreed with him on things in conversations.
It didn't make him love my character any less (...for a while. Sadface) and it made the romance so much more real to me.

Now I'm gonna go cry in a corner. Screw you Solas.

I don't really see what it has to do with the "straight gamers". I'm straight and though I totally didn't mean to romance Morrigan, she ended up my only one romance for DAO, because she's just goddamn adorable. Like, what's actually stopping people from creating a male pc or a female for being able to romance a character they like, instead of going for the character they don't really like. I mean, other than not wanting to start the game all over again, like OP.

Nothing, really. I did in fact create a male PC to experience Morrigan's romance (but also just because I like to roleplay a lot of different characters, not solely my own gender - it's fun!).

But what if you want to play a game as "you?" Some people don't do that, but my first PTs are usually based on how I would ideally react in similar situations. So obviously I tend to make my first PC female, like me.

So yeah...it's kind of disappointing, naturally, to find out that the NPC you click with isn't available to you...similar to real life. That's where I agree with the OP.

What I don't agree with is getting super whiny, rude or demanding about it, whether in video games or reality :)

"You're not my thing because you've got a thing," wasn't clear enough for you? She told me that in Haven when I flirted with her the first time.

Well... obviously, it's simply not possible for many reasons. Plus, it's not like our choices and reactions in the game are based on our sex (outside of the romance area).

What's not possible? Role-playing as yourself? You can get pretty close IMO...I mean of course we don't slay dragons and take names in real life (if you do, call me) but we can impose our own hypothetical reactions/choices and create a character that looks similar to ourselves.

You're right about our sex not affecting much besides the romance area though, thankfully! But for some people, including me, that's a big part of the role-play aspect...and what this whole thread is about...so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make...?

Not quite sure of my own now either, that's what I get for peeking in here and chiming in xD

To be honest, it would confuse me the first time, too.

But "See, we have too much in common. We both like... women?" is the ultimate "Oh, I see!" and a man who doesn't get the message THEN is an idiot.

Eh. It's only a hop, skip, and a jump from there to a guy thinking that "no thanks, I'm a lesbian" means "that just means you have to TRY HARDER to get me onto your dick". If I had a dollar for every time I ran into one of those guys...

To be honest, even if Sera was a straight romance, I still won't romance her. Cass is the best, I don't need anyone else. And lets be fair, theres plenty of woman sour about Cass being straight only.

Doesn't help that schools don't even touch on sexuality (as far as I know).  Would solve a lot of problems if it was at least explained...

Just breeds ignorance, not helped that when sex education is actually taught its usually only about straight sex & relationships with stuff mentioning LGBT issues getting attacked as "gay indoctrination", not surprising theres so many guys who think they can turn a lesbian if they keep harassing them & that a "no" really means "I'm just playing hard to get" when they have almost 0 knowledge about non-straight sexuality :?
