Chitchat is fine, as long as it is witty, intelligent, funny, engaging, or interesting.  She was none of these.

In fact, the one time I had something to say on the mic, there was an awkward pause, followed by her asking the guy if he'd heard something, and he replied no.

If it's a private conversation, then have it in private.

I'm not sure my conversations count as any of those things. But if it's my lobby I reserve the right to talk to my friends as much as I please. PUGs are welcome to join in, since the conversation is public, and I've had some nice chats with them. I've only once had someone tell me to "shut the F up" but since he heard me and Treezzzzz in the lobby and readied up anyway I didn't feel bad about inviting him to leave. He didn't, but he stopped complaining suddenly when he saw that Treezzzzz' DI was outscoring his TGI harrier by 100k.

And back on topic, I still love the GPSMG on the GI.

I believe that you are both having a constructive discussion but not quite understanding each other.

SMR, please explain to Purp that on PC any voice chat in the game is completely public to all, if one wants a private discussion one has to use an external method like Skype or Teamspeak etc.

Shinobu, please understand that on XBL private conversations that are not audible in the game can be set up in about 3 seconds using the built in infrastructure, even between people who have just met. There is literally no reason at all to be having a private, no-one-else-is-welcome, discussion that's audible in the game chat.

I need a couple more waves for Machine Mastery, and it occurred to me the GI might be a good character for it. I'd definitely try Shuriken on him, but I've completed that challenge already. Are there any other worthy candidates? I have no intention of listening to your advice even though I've gone out of my way to ask for it. Hurricane or gtfo, but I wanna know your builds anyway.

I'd advise you to max weapon damage in Hunter Mode, but you probably don't like using that, and I'd advise you to take the maximum debuff in PM but you probably spec out of that because it doesn't do enough damage, so really the best choice would be Reegar AIU.

QED.

Incisive! +10 <3 Having played on PC only I had no idea private conversations were so easy on console. In that case, yes, they were being super annoying. :?

Not only that but on XBOX you can (for example) be in private chat, then you want to send a voice message to someone else not in the chat, and XBOX will helpfully mute the other conversation while you record the voice message. It will also mute the other conversation while you listen to any voice messages you receive.

Incorrect. It isn't breaking any rules and if one of said people is the host, the complainer can leave the goddamn lobby or make their own if they don't like it. I don't have to bother spending those 3 seconds to placate some butthurt monolingual 12 year old if I don't want to.

I hear people converse about irrelevant nonsense in English all the time in my experience, but you rarely if ever see complaints unless it is in a language foreign to the complainer. I've never had someone complain about me talking in English to someone in any game, but I've had plenty of instances with the same happening in Russian even when it's conversation related to the game I'm playing.

I don't care about the language, I think if it was one I understood it would be even more distracting... but I -need- to hear the enemies. I don't mind chats at all but some people never shut up. Just talktalktalk without a pause. At that point I have to wonder if playing the game isn't distracting them from their conversation.

I could mention that it's somewhat rude to speak a language the rest of the team doesn't understand but I doubt that argument would go far.

Can you think of any other game or activity where such a behaviour would be okay? It's distracting, it undermines any teamwork and pretty much every talkative person played like crap because they didn't really pay attention to the game.

In fact you are utterly incorrect that I am incorrect. Especially since you snipped the context to make it appear that I was speaking in general, rather than the specific case, which was that of XBL, where it takes seconds to set up a private party.

Personally, I have no objection to friends talking to each other in game, but if they don't want me to be listening, then they can take steps to ensure I don't, and should do that in preference to acting offended.

On a side issue (since we've hijacked Clyde's serious thread already) don't you like it when you have no mic attached and so the pugs assume that if they can't hear you, it must mean that you can't hear them? :D

I'm inclined to not believe it had nothing to do with it, otherwise you wouldn't have mentioned their language and such similar complaints wouldn't be so common on English language forums. Either way, no one's forcing you to play in that person's lobby. There's nothing in the TOS that states one cannot talk about last week's episode of *insert TV show* over ingame chat. If I'm in a lobby with something that annoys me (lets say flamer, because conversations in any language don't unless the content is overtly offensive), I leave or deal with it. I also find your complaint of not being able to hear the enemies to be unlikely, because voice chat volume is relatively quiet on this game in my experience compared to sound effects.

Yes, that argument would go nowhere because I'm pretty sure you don't start speaking Portuguese if a Brazilian or two shows up in your lobby, because you probably can't. In your specific case, literally half the team was speaking Russian, including the host and someone who was likely invited by them. You weren't. They can speak whatever language they wish.

Yes. If and when you play a pick up game of *insert sport, board/ card game etc. here* with friends do you literally not talk about anything but the game? Do you get pissed at random people at the gym holding a conversation about work? Not that it is relevant, but are you also sure that said conversation was the reason for those people playing like "crap"?

I think QMR would not be taking issue with this if it hadn't involved someone from Russia.

It is irrelevant.  I don't care where someone is from.  I dated a black girl in my teens and 20's.  Don't forget they were speaking English in the games I played with them, and copped an attitude when someone other than themselves said one single sentance.  QMR is making a racial issue where no racial issue exists.

I said the host was a Russian.  That is no more racist than saying Garrus was a Turian.  It was simply a means of identification, and QMR is choosing to read more into it when there is nothing more to read.

In-character racism is fine, but don't let it become real-life racism.  Take a chill pill.

It isn't racism if you really are all scientifically inferior. Saying a quarian is better than *insert chosen lesser life form* is no different than saying a human is better than an ape.

Besides, I didn't pull the racism card in the first place, because speaking a specific language is in no way a racial trait. You made that implication all your own. I doubt the responses would have been different were it two Americans who were studying and practicing Russian in school vs ethnic Russians, but I'm not convinced the same complaints would have been made otherwise. In my experience, people tend to get butthurt more often when you speak a language in the lobby that they don't understand, when they otherwise wouldn't. That doesn't at all imply the complainers are racists (at least not consciously or overtly), but it does mean they are irrationally getting upset at silly things. But don't take my word for it.....

I didn't understand a single word they said though. Perhaps if I had chosen Russian instead of French in 7th class, this might be different. But alas, I thought French would be more useful in life. ... yeah.

that's not a very rational basis for complaints

Lucky for us, that wasn't the basis of the complaint

"butthurt?"

That's a term I would expect to show up in places like Steam discussions. Most of the people who still employ that term are twenty-somethings who still think like teenagers convinced of their own superiority. You're better than that. Then again, Quarians do love to recycle what others would gladly throw away.

I prefer booty-bothered, or taint-troubled, fanny-flustered, rump-grumpy, ass-gravated... there's a world of creative language out there for that superior Quarian brain to explore! Go forth, and invent!

All this Russian Discussion is making me want to bust out a batch of my absolutely not-famous Pryaniki. The secret is orange marmalade.

The basis was lots of nonstop noise throughtout the game, by two players who distracted each other instead of playing properly. The language they used didn't matter one bit in that context.

So far I kind of liked you and your posts in this forum but playing the discrimination card against me lost you almost all of my respect. Yeah, I know, you don't care.

The self-admission that things may have been different had the complainant understood Russian lends evidence to the idea that it was a primary factor upon which the complaint was based.

Good for you. Your opinion of my diction or locution is irrelevant to the point made. If it is really necessary to elucidate the obvious, the term was used to imply dismissal of the (IMO) petty complaint in a semi-humorous manner.

I understand what you're upset about--there is definitely unwarranted animus between Russians and Anglophones. That is a real problem and it not only includes but goes well beyond this game. However, you're accusing Daemion of that without proof. I think you owe him an apology.

Now why would whether you took French or Russian be in any way relevant or be a source of possible differentiation, if the only basis were the "nonstop noise throughought the game by two players" who in your (unverifiable) supposition "distracted each other instead of playing properly"?
