The fight with Gurd and his adds was tougher for me than those 4. One of them nearly died instantly with Cole (Archer, Assasin), Inquisitor S&S, Viv (Fire/KE) and Sera (Tempest/Daggers) in MoD. After that my Inq (dwarf warrior <3) tanked all three while my party nuked one after the other. On NM without focus abilities. An aggressive setup with lots of knockdowns, stuns and other CC is the best for this fight imo.

But my gear is nearly maxed out with Cole (5 guard, 5 hidden blades), Sera (5 guard, 5 hidden blades, walking fortress), Viv (5 guard, masterwork) and Inq ( 5 guard, 5 hidden blades, Veilstrike <3) and everyone on full basic T4 and T3 offense mats. So, with weaker gear and not at level 27 I assume they can be tough.

Gurd on the other hand, especially these Twohander warrior adds were a lot of work. They nearly onehitted everyone except my Inq. She solo'd Gurd and some adds in the end while everyone was dead.

Okay, I've been back.   I'm Level 27 and have finished the main quest of the DLC but even so I think it wouldn't have made too much difference if I'd done it immediately before the final part.    The main trick is make sure you have your focus on maximum and then use Mark of the Rift immediately the demons appear because they are clustered together then.     It took me no time at all to polish them off then.    I am only on normal difficulty but even so.     My Inquisitor is a rogue archer and I had Cassandra, Dorian and Vivienne with me, all bar Viv with cold resistant clothing.   Also having gone through the main quest I had the cold resistance positions you get the recipe for, so downed them immediately the demons appeared as well.    I barely broke sweat in defeating them but even without the cold potions I reckon we would have done all right.    Mark of the Rift is the key.  I used it during the Gurd fight as well.

I did it rolling 3 mages (with static cage), the cold resistance, and a warrior. I find controlling and keeping the demons from flying about far more important than any measurable DPS boost from a rogue character, but then I heavily disfavour the rogue in both DA:O and DA:I (for different reasons).

...you haven't seen my Inquisitor fight ;)

I use the Griffon bow & Hook'n'Tackle, so basically like a shotgun Infiltrator. A coat with Fade Cloak on hit, so being constantly in the crowd becomes real cozy. I haven't even skilled Longshot, Full Draw etc - so it's not your classic Assassin Longshot-spamming onlooker. Yet my way, there's not much flying going on for them.

I can absolutely understand people favouring mages, especially in the DA series - it's just never been my thing. I've just always been rogueish ever since BG, so that's not going to change. (And when it comes to my companions, the selection is almost never stategical)

But you know, whatever get's you through Nightmare and brings you joy, I declare viable!

The difficulty of these guy from hard to nightmare is like earth from heaven. Hard it too less the 5 mins to kill them. On nightmare is was more then 11.

I bested this encounter with a well equipped group at 19 on normal, and 23 on nightmare. They are hard, but not that hard. Use lots of barriers/guard, concentrate all your dps on one target at a time, they die pretty quickly that way.

i just kept them together. It hard to depend on guard and barrier in this dlc because everything in the dlc has ways through them.

Most difficult fight? I one-shotted it on level 23 or 24n Nightmare difficulty. It was a good thing I picked the magical shield left by Telana and had a point to unlock it though, LOL. And I suppose having 2 Rift Mages that constantly kept demons together for AOE bombing was a plus as well.

I found them quite easy. I was a tempest dual wield rogue at level 24 on nightmare difficulty when my party fought them.  Consisted of Me, Cassandra, Varric and Dorian.  i entered in stealth, twin fangs the furthest one away then elixir of fired and just uppercutted one followed by elixir of lightning and beat one to death while the rest of my party kept the other demons busy, rinse and repeat a few times and one shotted the encounter.  Although i was very disappointed with the lack of loot. just some gold was so meh

P.S.: I'm almost certain there was a peculiar sound effect playing right after I slew the very last one - anybody know if this unlocks something, other than letting you loot the gold in peace?

*clears throat* Anyone have any input on that?

Even with Mark, I didn't find it really feasible as a level 25

I was level 24/25, on Nightmare, had no mages, don't know how to combo those "kill a High Dragon in 5 seconds" thingies, and I make a point out of not using or even learning any Focus skills for any of my characters because I dislike the mechanic.

Don't mean to brag or saying you're bad, just saying it definitely is feasible. Just don't get intimidated and focus on a single one - Don't let your tank use aggro & use the resistance potions!

Defeated these guys on nightmare yesterday (first time playing JoH) and it wasn't that hard. I thought the ice giant was harder.

I was playing my level 24 rift mage with level 23 party consisting of Solas, Blackwall and Sera. Dispel was extremely useful for destroying barriers AND giving me barrier and bonus damage. I used about 4 healing potions and Solas' Firestorm focus ability tier 2. Sera died after i killed the first despair demon and i didn't bother reviving her until there was only one left.

I did beat those twice on nightmare.  First time with level 26 rift mage and  level 25 party (Varric, Cassandra and Solas). Cassandra's Templar spec were helpful as well as my mage's dispel. Second time was easier - level 27 rift mage, (picked the new ability Aegis of the rift), level 26 party Sera, Cassandra and Vivienne.

Oh, and fire runes and fire spells are your friends ;).

This fight was the point where I started questioning playing the dlc with my DW rogue first.. (DW rogue is the class I am worst at.. totally crappy to be honest)

Yeah 2 rift mages in the team really make a difference. None of my guys died even once on nightmare. (lv26 for Inq and 25 for everyone else - had Cass, Solas, Varric)

Honestly I like doing it old school Carta-style. No tactics, no pause, no potions, no focus, no mage, just random chaotic mayhem.
