i thought this fight as a means to discourage you from looting that pile of gold.

I played on casual at level 27 and still died. I just stole the gold and ran away.

vulnerable to static cage and panicked, for extra fun throw a disruption field while they're paralyzed. done.

When I encountered this I think I was level 27. I put it on Casual and wiped three times. I am convinced that this encounter was meant to be a sadistic joke by some designer ... someone sat there and said "harharhar ... I'll show these players what's what ... let me see ... what is the most annoying, horrible, awful enemy in the game? DESPAIR DEMONS! Great. Now let me put in FOUR of them. And make them level 30 Epics, each. Yeah. Take THAT, players!"
I haven't yet done JoH on my second go but as a Rift Mage with Spirit build, I expect it will be quite a bit easier for all the combos and status effects I can pull off. I'll bring Cass for her Templar abilities and Blackwall to pile on Guard and Panic. Then maybe Sera for ranged. We shall see ...

It wasn't that hard, even on Nightmare. Rift mage, Cassandra, Sera, and Cole. Static Cage, Veil Strike, Immolate, Dispel, Mark of Death, etc. Focus on one at a time. Eliminate the number of attacks against you and the fight just gets easier. I did it without Aegis of the Rift.

If you want a cheap way to win on insanity, just sent everyone back up the path just before you pick up the gold, lock everyone in place, and just use your ranged attackers to pick off the demons one by one. They won't leave that islet and cave area.
It's more fun to do it the hard way though I can't remember the details of how I did it last time. I did use Aegis of the Rift and played the whole thing using overhead camera. The demons move around a lot so you need to control your party so as to sustain attacks on and slowly pick off one demon at a time.
