Anybody still here?

Ugh. You know, I wanted to like DA:I. I just can't get into it. I was so hoping it would be a reversal of all the mistakes of DA2 ... but it wasn't.

Let me check off everything ...

Not only is there no Mac version, unlike DA1 & 2, there isn't really a PC version. As the "this sucks on PC" thread moves to page 700 or so, I concur with what people have said. "Made by PC gamers for PC gamers" is a lie. Plain and simple. I have found the controls and UI for this game irritating in the extreme. 6 patches haven't fixed much. No real tactical AI for companions, highly limited customization. Complete with a DLC that is only available exclusively for one console platform?

That is, when all that Origin DRM crap lets me actually start the game.

No possibility for mods to fix either the bugs or the intentional limitations.

Dialogue seems more "mechanistically wheeled" than even DA2 into limited options.

Combat is just a lot of slot-limited, action button mashing.

You know, I came back, mostly to see if people were bitching about the same things as me. They are. Then to see if they were liking PoE better. Most were.

Pillars of Eternity ... ready for Mac/PC/Linux on day one, designed for PC gamers for real, lets me actually read and select dialogue by thinking about it (complete with dialogue lines determined by reputation and ability, missed that since DA1), doesn't have a mod kit but is really designed for mod-friendliness ... IMHO it lacks only one thing, which is it also has no tactics or AI for companions. But other than that, I'm like ... what is so "old school" about doing RPGs this way?

And I gotta say one thing ... the voiceless protagonist did not bother me one freaking bit, because what s/he had to say (in text form) was often far more interesting to read/say.

Welcome back to reason. Thank you Obsidian.

I like the game. It's far from perfect, but few games are. It's far from the kind of game I would have wanted it to be, but I knew that well in advance.

It was clear to me from very early that they intended to do "a better DA2". And even if the game has some success - with me too - I always suspected that would be a mistake. I'm surprised and pleased that they did as well as they did.

I'm not disappointed, much perhaps because I've buried DA:O far behind me. I never expected a reversal from DA2.

When DA2 failed, the things D.G said amounted to that there was nothing wrong with the ideas behind the 'new direction', only the execution wasn't good enough. Something I wholeheartedly disagree with. The main problem was the 'new direction', not that the game was rushed, re-used environments, or such talk.

Then, despite that it was said that DA3 would take the best from DA2 and DA:O, as time went on there was absolutely nothing from DA:O visible. More and more the questions - 'What elements from DA:O will be there?" and "What elements from DA2 will be removed?" - begged to be asked. And they were asked, by me and others, many times. Always to be met with deafening and suggestive silence.

There are obviously a lot of marketing directives from EA making demands on the game design: 'Iconic' characters, multiplayer, same game on all platforms, easier character development, console actionplay... etc, but I also feel that the people mainly responsible for DA these days, don't understand different perspectives on games. They do what they believe in and understand. And I don't think developers can develop a game they don't understand. There's zero chance of the current Bioware to develop a DA:O again. It won't happen. There's hordes of people there who admire things like Diablo, Dungeon Siege, Japanese action-RPGs, and "got into RPGs" from Final Fantasy, and very few who've even played things like BG or VTM:B.

I'm not disappointed. Much because DA:I turned out much more enjoyable than I had dared to hope. The combat is foul diarrhea, but it's possible to role play a little, despite all.
