Never really used Dorian as I have no idea how to fully take advantage of the Necromancer tree. Playing on Nightmare if it matters.
Solid Dorian build?

So I just realized there is a build section I should have posted this in (I don't come here very often) and I have no idea how to move or delete this, whoops.

Necro does not have a decent mana recovery system so he needs low mana spells.

technically not quite true as death syphon (necro tree passive) regenerates mana every time something dies around dorian - including nugs / animals. so for mobs he has enough mana, with dragons/ large single targets this can be trickier.
give him heal of kill / heal on hit equipment or craft it for him and let him die a lot and go into simulacrum and then cast stuff for free.
use flashpoint (fire tree)+max crit % and/or mana surge (winter tree)+barrier with upgrade on any mage including dorian to get free casts. if you use a necro+ spirit(barrier)+inferno(flashpoint/ then your choice of wall of fire or fire mine) that is very solid. set fade step, barrier, wall of fire and walking bomb to preferred in tactics.
alternatively you can spec into static cage with upgrade instead of inferno put that generally works better on the inquisitor or another mage as the ai will not use static cage+walking bomb combo as effectively as it can be used (like in quick succession when flashpoint or mana surge perc is active).
as summary barrier is great but it is even better upgraded and with mana surge passive. pyromancers with upgraded wall of flame are generally the most ai friendly builds and most useful to the team, wall of flame is used very well by the ai (unlike fire mine). cryomancers (persistent blizzard) is much trickier but in a good 4 team party where enemies are dying quickly it should be possible through death syphon mana regeneration. Blizzard however is not as powerful as wall of fire or static cage so that is only if you somehow just love the idea of the spell.

A lot of people seem to spec him with fire as it benefits from his necro passives.
I usually go ice with him, just so he is more versatile in fights, most enemies that are immune to paniced are also immune to fire damage.

I generally leave Dorian to auto spec into the fire tree since when I play as a mage I go KE/Ice with Immolate and/or Chain Lightning. This is what I did on my nightmare PT. But I prefer the support role of ice for myself since I'm up front tanking as a KE. Dorian can be in the back casting those big AoE spells and causing people to freak out and panic. I just hit them with cheap shots of Winter's Grasp/Immolate/Chain Lightning before going in for close combat. I also make sure to give Dorian Winter's Grasp or Chain Lightning too, just so he can hit enemies who are immune to fire with something.

Also, he pairs well with an assassin teammate. Mark of Death and Hidden Blades grant precise control over when Dorian gets his on-kill bonuses.
And if you're bringing an assassin along, you want your mage to be setting up Shatter combos.

The first passive in the frost school is good for mana recovery during cooldowns. Any movement and casting most spells breaks it, but I find it helps a lot on hard. I think it's called Stillness of Winter or Winter's Chill, something like that, in the center of the tree, beneath winter's grasp. Unless they fixed the AI for Mark of Death, I don't even bother wasting a spot on a useless skill. My experience with the creatures that die when marked is that they stand around until combat is over, then run off and die where I can't find them. The upside of not bothering with a wasted talent is that I can spend the points on buffing him elsewhere.
I take Dorian just about everywhere, since he's really pretty easy to please, and he rocks in combat, but I don't play on nightmare. I just don't think the specialization works exactly the way it was intended. The added attribute points in constitution from the necromancy school do make him pretty hardy.

oooomg Dorian is so good and fun to play. I use this Pyromancer Pet build. The pet AI is ridiculously hilarious and silly at times but the firepower and the amount of fear is really useful. A couple of days ago my Dorian converted a Red Templar Behemoth and, in an attempt to run to help me beat up the other behemoth, it jumped into a hole and died.

I probably do it wrong, but with FF on, I have him set for Winter's Grasp and Static Cage, with Virulent Walking Bomb disabled (but I can order it into archers or whatever when need be). Pick up the good passives from Fire, and some of the others from Spirit and Ice.
With FF off, I just had him spam Walking Bomb all over the place.

Hey, magdalena, it's up to you, but you don't have to shy away from that spell unless you really want to. If you take control of Dorian after combat and click on the spell again, you'll dispell his glowy blue summons and the creature will die right then and there where you can see it.

I like this mixed build for Dorian when i have another mage in the party to cast barrier.

Everything except for spirit mark (i dont like how the AI uses it)
Winter: 3
winters grasp+
winter stillness
