Don't hurt me for the pun.

But anyway...is it just me, or have the party Mages gotten a lot less interesting as Dragon Age has gone on?

In the first game, Anders Morrigan and Wynne were all interesting and funny and entertaining on their own or in the group.

Then Merril in DAII:

And then we get to DA:I and....the Mages kind of fall flat. Dorian comes the closest to be entertaining, and occasionally one of them will get a good snipe in on someone else, but it seems most of the banter and entertainment is reserved for Cassandra, Varric and they tried with Seras.

Vivienne is really just kind of...flat most of the time and Solas doesn't say much at all.

And to top it off Mages have gotten less interesting since the first game, gameplay-wise, just from the removal of many of the things they could do in the first game (No Healing allowed, despite the game blatantly stating that Healing is very definitely a school of magic mages specialize in, nor can you use Blood Magic, etc.) . I mean, yeah, Fire/Ice/Lightning is cool and all, but not have the old Force/Healing trees limits a lot of the parties you used to be able to make with Mages (especially since the old Force spells are now spread out in the different elements).

I think it's very much a matter of personal preference, so I guess we'll just have to see how many agrees with you. I for one, do not, and to underline that I've made a list of the all mage companions (excluding Sketch and Finn) going from most liked to least. For the record, I hate myself for doing this since they all hold a special place in my heart. Except Valenna. Screw you Valenna. And Vivienne, even though I respect the writing of her.

Solas (DA:I)
Morrigan (DA:O)
Anders (DA:A/DA:II)
Dorian (DA:I)
Merrill (DA:II)
Wynne (DA:O)
Bethany (DA:II)
Vivienne (DA:I)
Velanna (DA:A)

As you can see, for me it's very equally divided over games, but I'm interested to see what people say.  :D

Solas is one of the most interesting and best characters BioWare has ever created, IMO. But he's subtle. Very layered.

Dorian is great too.

I never liked Morrigan much. Too much of a know it all and too mean. I loved Wynne in Origins. Vivienne I dislike but she's interesting. Merrill I also like. The Hawke family.

I think the devs dropped the ball when it came to Velanna because everything ultimately went nowhere.

As far as abilities go, I do and don't like the removal of a dedicated healer. One, it gives you somewhat more party flexibility, but it takes getting used to. You can still be very effective and heal up, especially once everyone is fully in their specs.

I think Solas, Dorian and Viv are three of the most interesting and well written mages we've had in the games.  I may not like Vivienne but I appreciate good writing.  I avoided using the mages in DA2 (Hawke was a mage and she was a better healer than Anders, better damage dealer than Merrill and more alive than Bethany) whereas I've often travelled with a four mage party in DAI.

I love having Dorian, Solas, and Viv in my party. Shots fired everywhere. Dorian has some hilarious banter with everyone (Blackwall/Dorian being some of my favorite).

DAI is really the first game I enjoyed most of the mage companions. All three of them are so well written. I only liked Morrigan in DAO; Wynne was a boring grandmother and Anders tried too hard to be funny, and I hated basically everything about him in DAA, before going over the edge in DA2. I did not care for Merrill (*GASP*) or Bethany, well, any of the DA2 companions tbh.

As far as mage game play goes....they still kick ass.

I was glad to have Wynne because she was actually more fun than one might expect from an old Circle mage once you got to really know her. She's an extremely powerful healer and has a lot to offer. She became like a surrogate mother figure to Alistair, but she also trolled him about things like giving him a sex talk. Also, when do you ever get an old lady in your party in a game, ever?

My party composition almost never changes. Two mages, a rogue (usually me) and a tank/warrior. In DAI, those mages were Solas and Dorian. Vivienne, I used sparingly because her ugly personality was such a huge turnoff.

And to add to my previous post; I don't think healing is needed at all. The reason for removing it was, as I understand it, primarily for lore reasons. Healing magic is somewhat rare, and not something most mages has had a need to learn. And sure, they could have solved it in a different way than removing it completely (it would for instance make more sense for Solas to have the spell, maybe), but if something else was prioritized instead I don't really mind. And difficulty wise, I've only played the game on as high as hard so far, but I've rarely died apart from the very beginning or when running into dragon fights to early.

And yeah, the rest of the abilities are very lack-luster. A great many spells have been removed, and the rest divided into schools which have previously been in the same tree. The tactical side of combat suffers for it, I think, and it has just become more mindless.

On the contrary, I like all the mages and even love some of them. Each of them offers different perspective on magic and how it affects their lives.

Morrigan and Wynne are great, and I think this is not the point of contention. Velanna is more difficult for me to like, and DAA Anders is just very entertaining.

DA2 Anders, Merrill, and Bethany are my children, and I love them to death.

I love Dorian and his sarcasm. His banters are just awesome, so are his butts. Solas is interesting. I like his take on spirits/demons and the Fade. Although I wholeheartedly disagree with Vivienne's opinions, I appreciate them. It is interesting how being in the position of power can influence her perception of the Circle.

Morrigan kind of broke the mold, but I think Dorian and Solas hold their own in DA:I.

Dorian is my favorite all time ever.  If he were real I would be his adoring bestie.  Followed by Bethany.  I love that she is so sweet and has a great relationship with her sister Hawke.  I have a love/dislike relationship with Anders. He was awesome in awakenings.  He was not so much in DAII with Justice inside him making him suck.  I like Morrigan more now since she has grown (despite wearing the same bikini top for the past 10 years - at the very least I'm sure the elasticity has worn out of it from wear).  Wynne, Velanna,   and Merrill all kind of rank equally in that I kind of feel blah about them.  And Vivienne bothers me the more I play DAI.  She is just so manipulative.  And she puts up a wall so you can't even really get to know her.  Even when she is mourning her lover's death she is still manipulating things to work to her advantage. Solas also bothers me because he knowingly lies by omission.  And his lie is not of the little white lie variety.  It's kind of a doozy.

My favorite mage is Solas, with Dorian and awakening Anders coming in close. I also like Merril and Morrigan quite a bit. At the other end of the spectrum are Wynne who, to me, felt like a preachy grandmother with her speeches about heroism and telling my warden how to do a job she had no idea what it envolved, and Vivienne for whom I feel a hatred I didn't thought possible. So character-wise, I don't personally think the mages fall flat, but to each with their on opinion. As for the game-play I only have this to say: WHY.CAN'T.QUIZZIE.BE.HEALER!?. Sorry for caps, but for me the removal of the healer class felt like a shot to the kneecap. Is because in every game I play, I always jump for the healer/support class like a rabid dog.

Mage as a gameplay class have gotten bland, boring and dull but as characters, they still remain entertaining and interesting.

I think Solas is the most interesting mage in the series. Not entertaining, of course, but a fascinating character.

I disagree. In my opinion, the mages have become complex. Dorian, Vivienne and Solas all are different aspects of a mage in Thedas.

And as you may know, I disliked morrigan. Her manipulations were for nothing but herself and she lacked the tact and poise of Vivienne to even pull it off.

It's just you, OP. I liked Anders, but Wynne was easily the most boring character I've ever encountered in any game. Morrigan was OK, but I never found her remotely deserving of the adoration people lavish upon her. In contrast, I loved DA2 Anders and DA2 Merrill. Dorian was the best though, IMO, so if anything, they're getting better, not worse.

Agreed (expect Wynne, she was my fave old lady).

The mages in Inquisition have been amazing as far as personality and banter goes. Dorian vs Vivienne is one of my favourites in the series.

I think the DAI mages are complex and contradictory characters. Aristocrat/outcast, god/apostate, mage/pro-chantry. I think they are as flawed and as interesting as their predecessors.

I've liked most of them. Some of my favorite characters in DA are mages. I think its not so much they have gotten less interesting....but they have changed. Maybe more serious? Less humorous? With the whole mage/Templar war thing, they have gotten less funny and a little bit darker, and deeper I think. By DAI even Morrigan has matured a lot. Solas is one of the more complex characters they have written so far.

As far as game play, I agree somewhat. I miss specializations like shapeshifting and blood magic.

That is genius! Attribution? Must convey kudos.

Only thing I'd change is to make Sten more emo.

I wouldn't call Morrigan's and Wynne's banter funny. Only person who made DAO funny for me was Zevran.

Merrill was somehow funny in DA2. Anders was funny's opposite.

I think Dorian as somehow funny in DAI is enough for me. Sadly I don't get much banter from anyone though so not much entertainment for me.
