I would hate to admit this, but Dual Wield has more multiple hit abilities, and would take much better advantage of crits and the abilities that utilize them. This is in general, not with any particular spec/character. I tend to leave Varric and Sera as archers simply because that fits them best.

Indeed dual wield deals more damage than archery but its the most squishy class/spec in the game and its pretty much guaranteed to die on higher difficulties constantly, specially if not controlled. But between archers, even when compared to inquisitor archer, Varric takes the most advantage from crit and crit damage and has the highest of both stats due to Bianca.

Archery sacrifices damage for safety.

Besides, Varric is a great support rogue, providing valuable buffs for the whole party.

Providing buffs is not that great in my opinion (nor enough to make him essential on nightmare). Early game, he has neither the stats (even with crafting) nor the abilities to take advantage of the stats. The looked like it hurts passive does not help with the cooldown, something that rogues HAVE to deal with early game. At end game everything dies rather easily, even dragons, on nightmare.

Quite honestly though, there is no real comparison between Sera and Varric. They both do similar, yet completely differing in style, jobs. Varric is great for sustained damage due to his specialization alongside looked like it hurt. Sera is more bursty, utilizing flask of fire for the hard hits rather than any long term damage.

Varric and Ironbull have amazing crit synergy. Ironbull went from a liability to a bulldozer. They both lower each other's cooldown times if specced right. I always used Sera because I was JUST focused on DPS on the weapon. I will sub out Ironbull and Varric for Cass and Sera for demon/rift fights.

I don't think there is an actual clear answer to this, it is fairly dependent on the stage of the game and which bows you have picked up.  If I were to generalize, I would say Sera tends to be a little better in the early to mid game if you have picked up a decent bow (like from the Astrarium reward on Storm Coast).  Late game I don't think there is a huge difference, but I would give the nod to Varric just because of party wide buffs.

Agreed I think it largely depends on the Specializations they each have as to which you want in your team. Varric is an Artificer and Sera's a Tempest. Personally I find Tempest works best on DW rogues (as I find that when I have used Sera in my playthrough's she's not been getting that heavy in the actoin tbh) rather than archers as I found that specializatoin especially the flasks very useful when enemies got too close to me the one time I've played a rogue before Presonally I've found Varric's skills moer useful with being an Archer than Sera's but this is  just my opinoin

Sera is a better archer early to mid game because it's easier to just give her better bows than it is to upgrade Bianca for Varric.

Sera is my favorite companion but she seems to die quicker then Varric does so i just end up bringing both. Sera because she's my best friend and Varric for survivability. That and i like his Elemental Mines and Fallback Plan abilities.

Depends on playstyle to some extent. I don't like to control companions except in emergencies, so Varric's spec isn't all that useful to me except for the passives, and the AI won't use Leaping Shot too well either.

Interesting. Can I ask how you spec them both?

My guess would be Varric's (Artificer's) And Take Them Down passive buffs IB's (2H's) crits, which in turn fuel IB's Flow of Battle. That's one side of the equation that lowers IB's cooldowns.

The other side would be Varric's (Artificer's) And Take Them Down passive buffs IB's (2H's) crits, which in turn fuel Varric's (Artificer's) Opportunity Knocks, reducing Varric's cooldowns.

Artificer passives do most of the heavy-lifting.

I'm running an Artificer now with Cass as a tank and it's a tough decision whether to leave her S&S to get an extra FT slot, or switch her to 2H to get Flow of Battle.

AFAIK, FoB still works with S&S, and you'd only be wasting the one point in a 2h-only prerequisite for it, so....

Yeah you've never needed a certain weapon to get the weapon tree passive to work.
