Seriously though. Is this a golden rule in all fantasy writing that elves shan't have facial hair? Because yesterday for the first time, I decided to create an elf from scratch and I thought it would be cute to give him a jawline beard. Nope, the CC wasn't allowing me to do so. Afterwards, went on Google and typed beared elves and I see a lot of conversations popping around saying that it has to do with their youth aspects or something in many lore and legends. I'm like: "Well, the old guy from the elf alienage didn't need a beard and was all wrinkled in DAO..." I figure they link facial hair to old age or something. Honestly I'm disappointed. Facial hair is not as ugly as people think it is and I believe elves could look just as cute with a little facial hair then nothing. Tried to make a male elf yesterday but he looked so androgynous that I couldn't appreciate my character at all. Confession time: I feel terrible for being this shallow. ![]()

There's at least two elves that have a beard in the Middle Earth lore, Cirdan and Tinfang Gelion (The star-beard) to be exact. It says that its rather rare when you read through the Middle Earth encyclopedia. Based on that lore it required them to be in the 'third cycle' of their lift before they can achieve bearded awesomeness.
I know they don't normally follow other aspects of lore in other areas but there's at least a precedent to follow in this regard.

Seeing how the elves of Dragon Age lost their immortality and gained some "humanity" aspects over time as they got assimilated to the alienages, I was surprised to see that some of them haven't adopted some of their hairstyle or facial hair style. It never occured to me that they couldn't "grow" facial hair at all, I'm being honest here. I seriously thought that some of them could grow facial hair.

elves with beards its the same as dwarfs who have the same size as humans.....and this is more about biology
there is only one universe who have bearded "elves" and it is suit them, it is TES
in Middle Earth only the most ancient elf -Cirdan have beard and he have it as i remember because he have a human ancestor and have a very hard and unhappy life, he was literaly look like very old man

TES also breaks this because they don't actually have dwarves, the Dwemer are just another breed of elf. They're only called Dwarves because that's what humans call them to differentiate them from other elves, they also call them Deep Elves.

You can have light stubble as an elf, but not a full beard; which sucks.

There's no stubble option in DAI, from what I've seen.

It's connected to complexion, here's an elf I created:

Goddayum ~ I need to try that. It doesn't look like it will change its colour with hair colour though.

(to 10k) Nice Inquisitor, I need to remember to add that complexion to my next Inquisitor.
Man, I hope that vallaslin design sticks around.

He has a nice bit of stubble, but based on where that shoulder is, I'm guessing he still suffers from Vegeta Arm Syndrome.

Tried to make an elf earlier, look decent... then there was an odd eye glitch where the eyeball is bigger than the eye lid and it pops out a little whenever he moves his head a certain way. Grrr...

I think they made all of the other races so difficult to tweak so we don't ask for them again.

No wonder I prefer playing human characters. They're not complicated to design. XD

You can also have stubble as a female dwarf. Not sure if LOTR joke, or just trolling... ![]()

They can. Female elf players, if they want long hair, are going to have male-pattern sideburns XD

Discworld lady dwarves have beards. I think Forgotten Realms do as well.

Discworld dwarves also actually eat stone, and trolls get smarter as the base temperature goes down. If those things were true in DA we'd be in serious trouble.

This stems from almost every modern fantasy world trying to be Tolkien.
Tolkien is the world were dwarves were short bearded miners who drank lots of ale and hand a fondness for axes.
Tolkien's work is the one where elves where lithe, fair, facial-hairless people with an affinity for nature.
You get the idea.
Not that taking inspiration from Tolkien is a bad thing. In fact, it's nearly impossible. Tolkien is THE benchmark for building fantasy worlds. Tolkien IS fantasy. But yeah, if you want a real answer to the question of "who said elves can't have facial hair?" The answer is Tolkien.

Teddy, could it also be a simple glitch in the CC or some morgram management folley? In as many ways as I've seen the CC crash I wouldn't rule it out over inconsistent lore and story or plot holes. Could it be your looking for meaning in all the wrong places?

Nah, elves don't have beards in the CC. Double checked today. ![]()
