Never played in a persistent world before but I'm a bit burnt out on the mmo rp scene and am looking for the most populated heavy rp world, any suggestions?

In my experience both Baldur's Gate: the Sword Coast Chronicles, and Sigil: City of Doors are good persistent worlds for roleplay. They are also the largest (and oldest) worlds out there for NWN, in terms of players. 

 

For Baldur's Gate you can see the server's player influenced campaign's history when you log into their forum. In the lore section, its not visible to guests.
Sigil likewise has a forum recording its history, though you may need to look around a bit. 

 

Whether you will like them depends on your tastes. There are plenty of other worlds out there you can also give a try if the popular ones don't rub you right.

There is Dalelands Beyond that has been around since 2010 and still has a population that rivals Sigil and Baldur's gate as well.
