Congrats!  You were hired by EA/BioWare and you've been selected to work on the next Mass Effect game as [insert title].  What would you do differently based on the "leaked" plot?

For me, I would try to find a way to tie it to the Milky Way.  Now I don't mind so much the setting might be in Andromeda, but my biggest issue is to be able to go back and see the consequences of the reaper war.  Or at least, have little nods here and there to the original trilogy.

And I don't mean a "what would Shepard do" moment.  I would like for the characters to be able in certain situations or dialogue to discuss events that went down.

I wouldn't do any cameos.  This is an entirely new story, with new characters to get to know and fall in love with.  I understand some people don't like change.  But this is a new chapter.

I will scrap the Andromeda galaxy. No need for going to another galaxy. Either way they'll have to start over, wether it'll be rebuilding the damage the Reaper War has done the galaxy, or colonizing a new galaxy. Besides the Milky Way has so much potential left.

Moving to the Andromeda galaxy sounds almost methaphorical for Bioware running away from the corner they've wrote themselves in.

Is the rule fir this game that we're stuck with the leaked plot and have to make it work somehow?

Yes, based on what we know from the leaked plot (if confirmed), what would you do?

Put out a hit on myself to save the fans like myself from a MENightmare. If thats not possible keep covertly sabotaging it until it can be made right. FAILING Plan B quit in frustration. Failing Plan C make it the way I'd want it even if I know others would hate it....I'd be a horrible as a dev obviously. :P

My take on the game is that we can't. The higher-ups like the theory and we're stuck implementing it. We can quit, but we can't make a different ME.

I'll have to give it some thought.

Throw in a choatic intro of our Hero fighting his/her way to the "Tempest" while the citadel is under attack. Throw in a scene where while charging through a shop a garbled voice says "Hi I'm Commander Shepard and this is-" fade out. Nostalgia and my adoration of the Milky Way aside (Its GREAT I've been living there for years) grounding the first few hours back in the Milky Way with maybe a cameo or too followed by a narrow escape into dark space after most of your colonization fleet is destroyed leaving you and whoever else is left scattered. Your last word from Command is that the status of Shepard unknown and your mission is a green light. You gawk at the empty stasis chamber of a dead or missing crewmate (Your friend/Richard Jenkins the 2nd) and hop in your own. When you get out a few hundred years later you see someone has been using the dead guys pod and there is a trail of melted ice leading away. By the Goddess a stoaway/possible squadmate. My fanfiction aside, if this "Andromeda" business assuming it is not all a joke then I believe atleast keeping the prologue in the Milky Way, adding in some cameos, and showing how choatic before Shepard made his decision were would atleast help justify the plot and maybe help calm the "Milky Way Loyalists" who want to stick to Mass Effects roots. The Hero having flashbacks to their old life might help some loyalists relate to the sense of loss, and maybe some MP maps set in the old Galaxy would help. Honestly true or not it must be heck for the developers to try and please everyone. I support the Ark theory but losing the old Galaxy would be sad, and I see why some might be disappointed.

Nothing. I think everyone here needs to stop worrying and complaining. Why you need to stop worrying you ask? well because It's like food what looks bad so you assume it's going to be bad with out trying it. And when you do try It. the it looks bad so it must be bad is still in your mindset so it's going to taste bad when it really tastes good, as to why you should stop complaining look what happen to mass effect 2, loading screens and planet scanning.

If anyone that signed off on ME3's ending is my boss, I'd quit immediately. If they were my underling, I'd fire them immediately. Or at best reassign, if they get me or a really really good day.

Otherwise, I'd try and get Timothy Zahn and Drew Karpyshyn in to write the story.

I'd make sure the feel of ME is not lost even if the setting, characters and some of the tech is. Might retcon relay technology to have been given to Leviathans from some other even more ancient extragalactic race that would otherwise play no part in the setting. Just to get relays in Andromeda without associated Reaper shenanigans, since Mass Relays are pretty iconic to the series.

Maybe I'll have more later.

I don't like the sound of over 100 explorable worlds. That sounds like might suffer from the same flaws of DA:I.

I'm starting to hate Skyrim, or rather it's success. If The Witcher 3 also suffers from story and immersion taking a backseat to open world exploration, I think I'm going to have to start mourning the death of story and character driven RPGs.

Simple i'd shove the destroy solution down everyones throats, set the game 40 years after the events of ME3.

turns out there's something more dangerous then reapers in the milky way.

the exploding mass relays wiped out system after system but the explosion had another unintended consequence.

this time the threat is organic. a species long forgotten about, who we're subjugated by the leviathans who survived their AI war, though barely.

then the first cycle came, again their numbers depleted but they survived by fleeing into the space between systems, now phobic of AI's and machines in general they redeveloped their ships purely to avoid all forms of detection other then direct visual, not heat signature, no radar no emissions. they altered their genetic structure to make them more capable of survival, the opposite of the Qurans they focused on altering themselves to be highly combat capable and by living aboard organic ships had to adapt a stronger immune system, and ensured their digestive system could extract nutrients from almost any form of life. worried about numbers always in in fear a reaper would stumble upon their living ships and wipe them out they they increased their fertility rates and gestation and development cycles.

in the aftermath of the first reaper cycle which lasted far longer then they anticipated, they found their population starting to explode, They found their home worlds incapable of hosting life, hope seemed lost, for so long they were so few and now their greatest strength had become their weakness. Until a single ship found nearby system of one planet was populated with primitive life even the highest developed life forms still lived in make shift villages constructed out of local material. but the planet did not have the biosphere to sustain all the ships they could land sustain themselves setup a colony and start over, help this other lie form develop and protect itself from the machines.

But the time in such close quarters had instilled loyalty to their kind beyond which anyone could imagine, instead they informed all the ships a delegation was formed to come to a decision, But while they talked their people were starving riots had broken out, and then one day their was a mutiny aboard one of the ships, it descend toward the planet. The other ships panicked and headed for the planet they touched down and in that moment they stopped being who they were completely, in an orgy of gluttony and violence they slaughtered all life in sight devouring planets, animals and even the villagers. they stayed on the planet for a many decades some tried to regrow crops but all in vain released from confinement of living space their population grew out of control they consumed the entire biosphere transforming the planet into a lifeless husk.

and when their was nothing left to eat? they turned on one another canibalism turned to full blown warfare where the objective was not just to kill but eat your enemy.

how many generations this went on for is unknown, what is known is a profit brought together the emerging groups under the fear that machines would return.

they would return to space where they were once loyal to one another they would find a new planet which they could feed on and that is how they would live strict controls on population ensured they could survive 1000's years on "live stock" (the dregs of their society) and then lay waste to new a world.

and this went on and on each time a they stumbled upon a world rich in life they descended like a plague after they had consumed the planet their eldest generation allowed themselves to be consumed to ensure the population was once again able to live in ships, over the raids they had developed a cycle of hibernation that lasted centuries.

but the fear of the machines never left them, anytime they detected an inorganic ship they assumed it was the reapers and so they never ventured toward the mass relays they fled into FTL the moment an advance race came towards them.

and it was through this means they survived, the countless cycles never had records of them, only vague references to ships fleeing to FTL almost as soon as they were spotted, no records of showing up on any telemetry, they were dismissed as ghost stories, never venturing into regions of space populated by advanced races they clung to the barely discovered regions, they became myths that devoured entire worlds. the reapers never had a reason to seek them out, for all intents and purposes they didn't exist.

overtime however they grew bolder popping up in regions shortly after the reapers purging to hunt and scavenging, they slowly learned about mass relays and their true meaning and learned the timing of reaper cycles and they continued to rewrite themselves becoming ever more deadly quieter and faster able to overrun worlds with standing armies in matter of days. they even started to strategically target ships with organics onboard who wondered too far or missed a calculated a relay jump.  But their armaments were designed to maim and wound even the few weapons their ships carried were designed to disable a ship so they could feast and thus they were never able to compete with the head races of each cycle.

until the explosion, having detected the reapers they had gone into hibernation awaiting the time when they could feast once more, but suddenly all ships were woken at once signature of mass effect relays detonating all at once, reports from scouts ships reporting........... the machines were dead............... and the citadel races defences were offline. their enemy was dead, it was time to celebrate.

Suddenly that urge they'd long forgotten about re-emerged so many planets, moons and space stations so full of life and now they were ready for the taking.................their ships headed towards citadel space.

in the aftermath of the reaper war the citadel races had rebuilt, but with the relays destroyed and with no working AI's it took decades weaponry took a back seat as even the turians  focused on fixing what was lost, a make shift network of relays were slowly brought back online powered tech removed by the reapers, things were slowly getting back to normal.

even the assari had reached a point where they could once again take to the stairs.......... unfortunately for them they were the first ones hit. the ships came out of no black completely undetected. as they called for help screaming about being invaded the council worlds were paralysed, thinking the reapers had returned. by the time they realised the truth it was too late refuges from outlying colonies and ex-patriots were all that were left were of the asari. They told horror stories of ships descending to the planet engulfed in flame and when they touched down they consumed everything in sight.

the combined forces of the citadel species rearmed and went to drive these, locusts back into the black. but the effort was haphazard the new council was unwilling to wait and forces were deployed undermanned and underarmed. but it was the sheer number of Locust ships and their ability to avoid detection that saw the first offensive a disaster.

luckily for the citadel races the locust ships could not use mass relays and as such it brought them time. the batarians were the first to make a break through in detecting locust ships, and with that several victories were small victories were made at one point the allied forces drove them back. but it was all in vain the locusts seemed to adapt quickly their ships somehow got stronger. with each new offensive. in time the locusts pushed forward slowly but sure consuming worlds in a bid to slow them down, the krogan cured of the genophage sent millions of troops to the next worlds in line its unknown how many they slaughtered before they were overrun but it gained them the allies many months and when a planet was lost they detonated nuclear warheads to deprive them of food.  while the turians had turned to suicide tacts developing ultra fast fighters with mass effect drives. they drove single fighters into the locust armada then detonated the cores.

but it was no use, their numbers were too many nothing seemed to stop them, they never flinched and with each battle the locusts altered their DNA and that of their ships becoming ever more invincible....... realising all was lost, the council turned to a project from the reaper war that was proposed but never used.

Thus the Ark Project began..............

Hm.. well, unless that title was Lead whatever i'd probably do whatever the hell my boss pays me to do and stop playing video games all together, since after working on them for every day of every week of every month i could no longer look at one without projectile vomiting.

Maybe lease a bigger apartment.. Bioware probably pay pretty well...

However... during lunch breaks i would slowly instigate a peasant uprising, when we'd finally amassed into a mighty drone throng we would march on our overlords with staplers pointed at their throats, demanding that the game takes place in the Milky Way where the setting we know and love is,

I'd ensure there was some quantum entanglement communication with the old galaxy to give sense of continuity.
I'd ensure there would be proper side/secondary quests with choices
Ensure the exploration element isn't excessive and that there is strong enough story content to go round these explorable areas.
I'd try and set it reasonably close to arrival, so there's still a frontier/pioneer ambiance
Little auto-dialogue, return of neutral conversation choices

Usually, when I start a new job, I do two things immediately:

1. I take responsibility for the maintenance and proper supply of the nearest coffee machine. This ensures that a shortage in coffee is never an issue.

2. I propose to instigate a happy hour with company paid beers for everyone, starting 5pm every Friday.

Not sure where I'd take it from there.

I'd re-brand the game, pitch it as an idea to CBS as a new "Star Trek" game or pitch it as an idea to Disney as a new "Star Wars" game. I'd also come out publicly and state the "leak" was a way to generate useful data and feedback based on systems and features that could be in the next Mass Effect title. We'd go on from there.

That's a lot of setup! If you want simple without ramrodding an ending then just say Shep was concussed into a coma when hit by harbinger's beam and everything after that was a dream, meaning the scene of Shep breathing was just her waking up. If you picked another ending your Shep merely remains in the coma. Either way your body gets retrieved after total defeat. Also the Ark? Being built by the same amazing collection of engineers that made the crucible, who better to retreat with into dark space? The crucible? Used as a worm hole bomb. Boom, new trilogy, Shep alive but either older or still in a coma. Reason not to go back to milky way? Reapers gonna reap.

Simple with zero plotholes! Personally I'd rather not use it, but simple nonetheless.
