A disappointment, just like my future son will be when he inevitably decides to make poor life choices.

" Are you a real living Prothean? " - Tali

" As opposed to a fake dead one? " - Javik

The characters and squad banter are one of my Highlights of the trilogy

It's not N7, as Bioware likes to believe.

Mass Effect, to me, boils down to a few basic elements.

A protagonist I can define through character customization and dialog choice.

A setting where humanity in struggling to stand among other races as equals.

A universe full of ancient and hidden mysteries.  Even the the Shepard Trilogy, it's obvious that the universe contains wonders and horrors beyond just the Reapers.  The Thorian being the most obvious example.

A universe that is filled with horrible beauty.  To me, one of the biggest failings of the trilogy is the Rachni.  They has SO much promise.  The moments where you could stop on the uncharted worlds and listen to their song are still some of the most chilling of the first game.  And when you confront the queen on Novaria, and come to understand the beauty of the Rachni, and the horror of what was done to them.

A struggle against titanic forces.  The Reapers, the Geth, the Collectors, the Leviathan.  Standing against an enemy that out classes up, and finding a way to win, or to bring them to our side.

Exploration.  Discovering the new, and the ancient.  I loved the uncharted worlds.  Anyone who didn't is just wrong.  If you can stand on the surface of an uncharted world, and look up at the Great Rift of Klendagon or twin suns in the sky, or any of the other vistas and not feel a sense of wonder, I don't want to know you.  And of course, there's Ilos.  Ilos was amazing.

Friendship.  The relationships you build with characters are amazing.  The moment in Mass Effect 2 I love more than any other in the entire game is when Wrex sweeps aside everyone around him, and just says, in pure, unmitigated delight, "Shepard!  My Friend!"  There are so many moments in ME3 like that it's hard to list them all.

Darkness beneath the surface.  The universe is bright and shiny, but that is a veneer, stretched over vice, corruption and greed.  The mercenary gangs, the fact hat Aria is allowed to exist, the fell as though holding on to civilization is a hard fought struggle.

Hope.  The fact that, even in the face of all the horror and darkness, people still believe, hope and dream of a universe where there is light and justice.

Mass Effect resonates with me, because at the end of the day, it's everything Star Trek should have been.  A vision of the future that is ultimately bright, but unlike Star Trek, it doesn't paper over the fact that there *is* darkness, both without and within.  It simply believes that if we work and fight hard enough, we can win against it.

What set Mass Effect from the other games I played are
one, the fact that you can make choices and have friends that feel like real friends,
two; powers-tech and biotic powers,
three; the different type of guns,
four; the environments and also the ability to create your own character as the way you want. And this way, easy to own him or her as yours.
These things may be the ones that make this game trilogy as the game I'll always love. I don' know; I can't really answer the question either though.
I'm not sure about what to expect from ME:Andromeda but I'm optimistic.

However the new DMC game didn't feel like a DMC game. I love Dante and the Devil May Cry game series but the last game, even though having the same mechanic, the same powers, the same weapons and the same characters(younger and different)should have been named as another game. I enjoyed playing it but it didn't feel like the game I loved or the Dante and Vergil I knew.
We'll see the new ME game soon.

Mass Effect is the best video game trilogy I have ever played, brilliant story, brilliant characters and filled with emotion.

Absolutely love it :) Just hope it gets a remaster for PS4!

First game was pretty fun, a nice intro to the trilogy while meeting with many cool characters and the general story of the series.

The second game is one of the best games I've ever played, period. I will cherish it until the end of my life. I really cannot find any flaws with it.

The third game was great until the last 10min. After that it's the biggest disappointment and a major source of discontent, anger and rage. At this point I just ignore that it ever existed. I haven't started a 2nd playthrough since the completion 3 years ago.

ME is the greatest video game I've ever experienced. Characters, me3 had ridiculously fun gameplay mechanics, epic story, and eezo are the foundations andromeda must be built upon. Without that it just won't be worthy of the name mass effect. Bioware has set the bar very high

The most important (and distinctive) aspects of Mass Effect to me are:

The characters: well-written, interesting characters that make the journey a lot more special.

The atmosphere: the locations, architecture, technology, armor, etc. All three games have done an amazing job of creating interesting worlds that include both classic sci-fi elements and new, fresh ideas. The use of sleek lines (in armor, buildings, clothing) makes it aesthetically pleasing and screams future to me.

The gameplay: I love the different classes and the combination of guns and powers in combat. It emphasises on the rpg aspect of the games, since you can choose exactly what your battle style is. The choice of which types of guns to pick, which guns within a specific type (e.g. the shotgun) to choose and which powers to use are, to me, very important and it adds a lot to the replayability as well. I like the rpg elements like the paragon-renegade dialogue system and even small things like changing your look (character creator, different armor and casual outfits) or being able to holster your weapon (shame on you, ME3!). Lastly, even though vehicles were not included in ME3 (and only in ME2 dlc), I feel like they're a part of Mass Effect. I can't imagine ME1 without the mako and I love that shitty thing to pieces. Happy to see it returning in Andromeda.

Being in real-life that guy who when it comes to girls is 99% of the time "Damned if you do, damned if you don't"-fail, Mass Effect is about the relationships, the interactions. Coming from Oblivion, back in 2008, the fantastic job done on the characters' body language totally sucked me into every conversation of ME1.

Now, what is Mass Effect not -- that totally dain-bramaged resource-scanning system of ME2 (carpal-tunnel-inducing!), that totally retarded flying around on 1000 units of fuel mini-game, that totally irrelevant inconsequential and uninteresting reaper alertness mini-game. Let me guess, Marketing insisted on 'more features'?!

BioWare, I hope, next-gen, FrostBite is something you respect enough not to use to code silly time-sinks that at best are the post-millenium equivalent of what QBasic beginners would be proud of: way to turn The Normandy into the new Digger or PacMan! So much for the most advanced ship in the Alliance fleet.

I'm a simple man, i play games for their gameplay.

It's a Sci-Fi themed third person shooter series with satisfying mechanics and variable gameplay style between the classes (excluding the first game), great music (excluding the first game), and unusually detailed storyline. Sure the ending is poor, but it doesn't invalidate the rest of the series' strengths.

So it's a series i have enjoyed playing, am currently enjoying playing, and will enjoy playing in the future. Excluding the first game :P

Nothing more, nothing less, and that is enough

Oh, right, planet scanning in 2

But that's what save editors are for ^_^

And i think it is a clever move to set the game in a different galaxy, where they can ignore the baggage of Reapers and Crucible's result. Brand new adventures avait! However... :P

I really liked ME1's story but thought the combat and gampelay were mediocre

I really liked ME2's combat and characters but didn't really care for the story

I thought ME3 has a mediocre story and also fairly mediocre gameplay.

I play games for the their gameplay and combat, so ME2 was my favorite. As for what defines "mass effect" its essentially just a sci-fi/space opera themed rpg/third person shooter hybrid with a focus on character creation/customization, player choice (however irrelevant it is in the end), character development and exploration. The game-play doesn't really have anything all that unique (basically gears of war with "magic" powers) so it could be tweaked and/or completely overhauled without loosing the overall "vibe" of the series.

I play different games for different reasons.  BioWare games have always had the story and characters I enjoy, whether or not I like them, they are usually interesting.  Mass Effect series turned  into the game I loved most and hated more intensely than any other game.  For me, they did a really good job with characters and story.

I loved the story of ME1,  I teared up every time I went to Virmire no matter who got left behind.  And knowing that Shepard would be carried over to the 2nd and 3rd made it extra special.

ME2 gave me so many ways I could mix things up,  Go after the crew immediately or wait.  Have Jack and Miranda help with the swarm and Jack will die in the attempt to save Miranda.  I did the "bioware" route a couple of times but it was more fun to send someone who should have been able to do the job and see what happened.

ME3 did some things really well.  I once romanced Thane in 2 and his death felt right to me.  Mordin's death made me tear up but I had no problem seeing him make this decision.  I loved Wrex and Eve.  But they did a number of things rather badly.  Poor Jacob among other things.    It did give me different perspective on the DR in Origins.

All the way back to Minse  and Boo; Carth, Bastila, Jolee Bindo, Sky and Silk Fox, Alistair, Dorrian, Solas, Cullen to Kaidan, Garrus, Ken, Gabby, Sam and Steve.  Their characters have made me laugh, cry and sometimes, yell at the tv.   :)  And once walk away from the game in anger.

Mass Effect 2007 - 2012  5 years of my life.  And  :D now I"m playing it again on the PC with the MEHEM mod where Shepard can live and put the plaque up for Anderson or die.  No jedi smile from her love interest.  I'm also playing other games so while I once played the ME series pretty much continuously, now I play it occasional.

To me, Mass Effect is a troubling (and failed) attempt to expand the definition of RPG.
