Why does everyone only ever play Platinum on Firebase Giant?

I get that it's one of the easier maps, you can just hide near the spawn point most of the game, but it's so boring not playing any of the other maps.

Whenever I quick join a game it's Giant and maybe sometimes White or Glacier. Very rarely I'll see any other maps chosen. And people usually quit if I'm leader and choose, horrors of horrors, Firebase Reactor.

In my days it was Rio and it was probably more boring than Giant.

Glacier is never too dull, especially the hazard one.

But I agree, U/U is the way to go.

I think you answered you own question. Giant is easy to hold, and (on hazard) has generous ammo boxes.

Once you find a good group you can play Platinum on whatever map you want, but there's nothing wrong with newbies to Platinum playing a map they're comfortable with.

It's a bit annoying, but I'll take it any day over nothing but Rio games popping up.

I don't preset to Glacier because lamers who compete for points have an affinity for that map.

Glacier isn't any fun when it just gets spawn nuked incessantly.

I haven't played a single wave of Plat on Rio, because by the time I finally got around to moving up, the Box of Shame had become such a 'thing' that most people were actively avoiding it.  Fine by me.  I hardly ever go pugging on Plat, and when I do the map will invariably be Giant, White or Glacier, or their Hazard variants.  It's pretty boring, but I do understand it.  Rolling Goddess on PS3, for example, can be... p r o b ...... l e m...... a.... t i................c.

On a related note... can we have the 'which maps do you like/dislike' discussion again?

Because I think it's been at least a month since the last time.

Good question. Whenever I join Platinum matches, Giant is where I always end up too...

And on a related note. Why do folks always have to camp Giant near the LZ zone? Why not the control room side of the map for a change of pace? If you like camping, I'd figure you'd be also starving for some much needed variety too... I also remember during Silver days folks only camping Giant Control room. Guess once pugs were introduced to weapons like Harrier, camping closer to an ammo box like Giant LZ became a must, sadly...

Easy to hold. Generous nade boxes and has a decent kiting route if things go sideways. Honestly there are easier maps for some kits though, White IMO is much easier with an even average team. Reactor actually isn't a bad map either.

From the LZ you can control the nearby spawn points. From the control room, you can't.

Not everyone plays Giant.  I've got an enthusiastic fella here willing to try unknown map and against Collector.

I wish I run exclusively into those kind of hosts.

The invisible kind?

Check the bolded part.

The ones who preset to collectors.

I'm talking about the fact that the latency makes it look like there's no host. :P

^ There is no joking around when it comes to collectors. Collectors are serious business - no messing around.  ;)

Edit: I know it was a joke, I just wanted to fulfill my daily quota of collector posts on BSN and it was a very opportune moment :P

LOL

Pugs camp because they dont or are not comfortable running around any map like they do on silver or gold. A map with a decent defensive position is attractive in that way so they can do a revive loop behind some cover if possible, instead of standing out in the open center court and getting blasted on gold and dying with no revive at times. Ever since the game came out playing defensively is a PUG trait and has always annoyed and frustrated anyone that just like to run around and go out and kill ****

I mean why do you think you see AIU/Juggernauts/Volus in PUG lobbies on Giant/Rio especially? They want the credits with the least amount of pain.

The evolution of platinum games:

At release the first thing people tried to do was farm White the same way they did Geth Gold.  It was kind of crappy.

Then the next big thing was farming Glacier from the small room in the center.  This was so popular, they changed the map so you couldn't go into that room.

After that, sadly everyone started playing Rio so they could stay in the box.  The problem is that this map sucks for objectives and it wasn't nearly as effective for farming with random players as old Glacier was.

Giant got more popular around the time the last challenge came out, and I even hosted games on that map to try and drag people through.

In any case, every single map is campable for the duration of the game.  Ease of objectives should be the real reason for selecting one map over another, and some of that will be up to RNG.  Goddess is a good camping map, and really only has one or two tricky objectives for a team.  Hydra is the same way.  Condor is also not bad for a team, especially if everyone decides to just take PPRs so ammo box glitch can't have any effect.  Jade has basically one bad device, although it is a doozy.

I'd take a puggernaut 10x over those people who run ahead like madmen to get to spawns before you can even see anything, rage-gelling a few times in the process. And as soon as things get a bit too difficult and they can't roflstomp, they use a rocket. It's not fun at all.

To me the experience is equivalent to being trampled by a bus of Chinese tourists flock while I'm waiting in line at the buffet and they all rush past me for fear they won't get enough.

Camping is a perfectly sound and intelligent strategy. Boring yet effective.

I don't think it's only just camping. I believe people feel which maps are the best for kiting, objective locations and which maps are nicely divided into "sectors" where you can't get sniped from all directions and use said sectors for CQC kits. And Giant is really good at that.

It is but Giant does have some shitty objectives as well.
