Either way, it's not hard to tell that either the top or bottom answers were baited for a conflict. It should have been a simple question like the 3 middle responses, but you had to go and throw in the extremist choices on either end. You dug your own hole even before the first posters. So don't throw all the blame on the "general populous" on here.

Why does it have to be an obsession? Why is it impossible to like the idea of a female protagonist without having some sort of secret agenda to kill all men? You just look at the concepts and you either like them or you don't, there really isn't much more to it than that.

It's an obsession because people keep wanting to see female versions of traditionally male characters. It doesn't mean it's a bad thing, it just means that people keep coming back to it.

I never said it was impossible to like the idea of a female protagonist without some secret agenda. For somebody who claims to have wanted to avoid "social justice issues", you're only adding to the whole thing by comments like that when I didn't even begin to suggest anything that ridiculous.

What I said is that I don't get why people want to take male characters and put boobs on them, as opposed to getting a new female character.

Or being able to play as an existing female character that was previously a NPC like some people have suggested with Zelda.

That's kinda conflicting. If we hated social justice issues we wouldn't bring it up. I'm pretty sure most of us know of the actual real social issues going on in this world. We just like to make fun of the internet social justice issues. Because TV is no longer funny.

But this thread is not about social justice issues, I tried to say that this thread is not about social justice issues, I only brought it up to ask people not to turn this thread into a discussion about social justice issues but lo and behold y'all turn it into a thread about social justice issues, for people who claim to hate social justice issues you sure love talking about it.

Politicians, in condition,

Counter culture, full of vultures.

We're goin' all out.
But get 'em up, get 'em up.

This.

These people dress the issue up as "destroying sexism within media and representing females better" but that could work with creating entirely new characters who are female. In truth it seems some people want male characters turned into females just to raise a "middle finger to patriarchy." You can add more female characters by creating new ones or using pre-existing female characters as protagonists, there's no need to reboot a character.

Those who are trying to dress up this issue as something else would probably rage were Eidos to suddenly change Lara Croft's gender and make her into Larry Croft for example. You can use all their same arguments against them here too:

  • When does Lara need her vagina to move the plot forward?
  • How does Lara's female gender make her achieve her goals that male characters could also achieve equally as well?
  • Since no one mentions Lara's gender in dialogue, how can replacing her with a male version be hard?

Just as in the case of the male characters these arguments are used for, it doesn't work here. The character was created as a female, it was the developer's vision to create a female explorer and it is also part of Lara's character (because gender can define a character just as something as simple as clothing and hair can as we found out with the rebooted DmC - where the new Dante was still a wise-ass sarcastic joker but looked like a emo much to the disdain of the fans). Ultimately, it being the developer's vision is enough to justify whatever gender they choose whether it's referenced in plot or not.

If someone wants a playable female character in Zelda then I don't know why it can't be Zelda herself. "But she's not a warrior!" and Link isn't a female but these guys don't seem to care about the canon/lore or background there.

It makes me laugh really, this subject doesn't just extend to media. Did you know some people are even trying to represent Jesus as a woman now? Someone even wrote a book where she used the Jefferson Bible and replaced "he" and "him" for Jesus with "her" and "she." Link I wonder how far in the future it will be before recent historical figures are claimed to have been secretly female or get portrayed as female for nonsensical reasons? 30 years from now, Abraham Lincoln will be Abarrane Lincoln if SJW's keep going...

I think it would be an alright change of pace. Wouldn't be ground breaking or anything to me but it would be different.

I wonder if it would fit with the lore though? Technically most Links are different versions right? I'm not sure if the in story lore says they're the same person or if it's just a role that has to be constantly fulfilled.

Yeah, they're all different Links aside from the few direct sequels a la Majora's Mask and Phantom Hourglass.

So I don't really have a problem with it and think it would be neat, but I don't really have a burning desire to see it happen either.

I don't give a damn about Legend of Zelda or Link, but the forthcoming quote was so laughable that I had to comment:

Yes Skyward sword does imply that but I don't remember it stating anywhere that the incarnation needs to be male or have blonde hair or any other silly restriction you want to arbitrarily place on the hero, just because most of the incarnations of the hero so far have been male does not mean they all need to be male, is there no room for variation?

Also considering that many of the incarnations have been children when they saved the world I am not sure it is too big a stretch to believe that a woman could save the world as well.

Look if you don't want to play as a female character or the idea of playing a female character makes you uncomfortable then that is fine, you have the right to your preferences, but at the same time there is nothing saying that all incarnations need to be male either or that it is impossible for a female incarnation of the hero to exist.

This couldn't possibly be more ironic. You're claiming he's placing "arbitrary restrictions" on Link -- even though emperical evidence and simple logic are on Kaiser Shepard's side -- while you're simultaneously championing an arbitrary gender change for Link, because reasons. Good one.

Zelda is a case of Generation Xerox which is common in many Japanese games. Zelda has the same recurring characters, the fan base consider them the same characters though even though some of the games are generations apart.

That character's role has always been portrayed by a male, either an adult, a young adult, a teenage or a young kid. Never it has been changed by gender, and the reason is that's the archetype, a young male elf, dressed in green and white, with a funny hat, a shield and a sword.

What would happen if I changed Jill Valentine into a male called Bill Valentine? You get a total different character who needs new characterization - based on his gender - and that has nothing to do with the previous, except he has a similar role in the story.

What you get for swapping sex is pleasure suited for a sick mind. I'd never change neither the gender or the role of any famous character, videogame intended or not, unless there is a specific and strong reason to do that, remaining on the same base of the main opera.
