Why?
It's a butchering of his character and of the franchise/lore/story. Pretty simple thing to grasp really.

What character is there to butcher?
feels appropriate for some reason.

Link's legacy of being a proud cishet male who protects and rescues those too useless to save themselves, such as women.

Ouch! Zelda is one of the handful of video games that manage to be both a really cool game and have a cool backstory/setting/characters IMO.
Link doesn't really have much of a personality nor a backstory to talk about, at least not outside of Wind Waker where he's able to express emotions beyond constant grunting and shriek noises.

Link has nothing on Adol Christin, whom gropes goddesses in the dark corners of dungeons for their measurements.

Well if it had more backstory and dialog it would detract from the game no? I think it's one of (again rare) examples where they both surface and are pretty compelling. Plus Skyward Sword had hefty amounts of all kinds of stuff (as a more modern example..)
For most people the distinction between A link to the Past and say the NES Zelda isn't apparent, but I actually perceive the two to be very different in overall aesthetic because of Yoshiaki Koizumi's influence in the storytelling aspects. I rather enjoyed reading the Link to the Past manual over and over again, with things like the imprisoning war, the nature of the triforce.. etc.. etc.

Which in of itself is irrelevant to the point I was making.

Lets be honest here, everyone who votes for any of the last 3 options is a misogynistic shitlord, the person who voted 5 is merely being honest about it.

Eh, I wouldn't mind them providing for both options. I probably would stick with male Link, but other than a new character model and changing he to she, I can't imagine this taking up too much effort. Of course, this is all provided that I actually buy a Wii U, which isn't happening any time soon.
The idea of this sounds so BioWare that it lowkey makes me angry.
Gonna be honest here, the idea doesn't sound like it'd be too bad.
Unfortunately, to make a good female character work, you have to make a good character that works first. And Link just isn't that good of a character. He hasn't evolved since the NES days of being a silent protagonist with no real personality outside of a desire to do good. Zelda's gone through many different incarnations but link's been mostly the same. So making link a girl, outside of having some situational humor with character dialouge, would would have no impact on the story, and thus be a waste of time.
Now making the character female and giving them a good personality would be great. I've seen it done, its wonderful.

But honestly, a good personality with a bit of a comedic spin does wonders for making a good character regardless of gender. And its just something nintendo isn't comfortable doing. And to be perfectly honest, I think many Legend of Zelda fans, after many years of the traditional approach to protagonists preserved via Mario and Zelda, would not want to see that change.
Can't blame em either. There's a lot of games that embrace the method I stated above, this site being dedicated to a company that does just that. But there isn't a big push for the old school silent player character these days. I don't see why it should change, and not have a different game that champions the concept a female link would have done, which can embrace the new way of protagonist writing without loosing one of the flagships for the old.
Wonder how feminists would freak out if someone suggested a female character be turned male.
And then rioting about it.
People claim Dubstep is not music.
I say nay, compared to this "singing" Dubstep is the very soul of music.
I honestly don't see why... but then again why not? Link has always been the most boring thing about the LoZ series. In fact, now that I think about it, females have always been far more interesting in the series. Zelda in her various incarnations are way better characters than Link. And do I even need to bring up Midna at this point?
In fact I would be perfectly fine with a compromise: make Link a female, but imbue them with absolutely no personality beyond just your standard "hero".
I would only be opposed to it if I didn't have a choice in the matter between male link and female link. Just forcing it upon everyone because it's the new thing to do isn't right if there is no choice to decide.
I want a protagonist like this, not necessarily a LoZ game. Now making the character female and giving them a good personality would be great. I've seen it done, its wonderful.

More like never a LoZ game. Equal parts "it wouldn't happen" and "it shouldn't happen". Especially not on the back of the whole female Link idea. That kind of behavior is too much like a wholly different character to not deserve a different game. Nintendo gets enough flack for repurposing different ideas and throwing in characters from their established IPs anyway. Like that Link's Crossbow Traning or whatever it's called.

Reezy, you somehow knew what I meant through my terrible choice of words.
I meant "not necessarily" as "it doesn't need to/shouldn't be", I know that isn't the correct way, but that's the best I could come up with at the time.

I thought so. I had to be sure though so I threw in my two cents.
You guys, I was just thinking about how we need more LGBT representation in the Mushroom Kingdom as well.
Nintendo really is grossly unprogressive ![]()

Hell you never see Zis junk so its either a dude or a flattie.
What did White Knight Chronicles do?
Let you make the main characters companion instead of the main character. the companion was then used in the multiplayer.
How did everyone there not just burst out laughing?
the thing is most feminist art eventually lets you see mu*f. i guarantee most of the guts were just hopping.
When will video games stop being such human-centric bigotry? What about all of the Otherkin out there? The people who self identify as animals, or plants, or rocks, or space, or whatever they think up of. If video games don't remind these people what special snowflakes they are they could be triggered or worse!
Anti-psychotic medication.
