To give a serious answer:

It don't matter. Link being a woman isn't such a big deal. We play an androgynous man in tights anyways so a step to the female side wouldn't be all that different. There's a reason why there are so many female cosplayers of Link and tbh they fit the role much better than most guys who try and play as him. So there's that.

Especially since it alienates the bulk of the fanbase only to appeal to a fringe vocal minority of agitators(a good portion of which don't even player video games or the franchise in question).

This was actually proven in one of Sarkeesian's latest videos. She made a video about positive female representation in videogames. She chose a blank slate who's gender isn't even definable unless you're told that it's a female. She told all of the people who watch her videos to immediately go and play the game. People did some digging and found that the average people playing the game per day went up by... one person. A single person went and played the game despite her video getting over 230,000 views to date.

That just shows what's been guessed at all along, these people don't play videogames. Devs bending over backwards to cater to these people has no upside for them. It would be like a farmer who is getting his crops destroyed by a swarm of locusts, but instead of protecting the crops, they help the locusts destroy the crops. Then the locusts move on to a new target, and all the farmer has done has lost the crops, and has no customers left to sell them to.

I don't see why people who want to play as a female character in these kind of games don't push for a game set in the same universe with a different protagonist. What's the point of changing the sex of a character that already exists? It seems arbitrary and perhaps even a little spiteful.

Instead of complaining that devs don't allow them to make set characters like Link, Geralt etc female, why not simply ask for new female characters?

That's actually a good idea, as long as they don't become a walking soapbox for contemporary Feminism like Lady Thor.

A game set in the same universe with a different protagonist... so, another Legend of Zelda game, with a female Link.

You know, since every Link is a separate person, outside of WW->PH, OoT->MM, etc. It's only precedent dictating a new one be male, not continuity.

Well at first I thought it was satire but you're honestly confusing people. You seem very serious and pressing about the whole "issue". And cheap shots aren't going to get you anywhere tbh.

The truth of the matter is I saw the female link concepts and the thought of playing a Zelda game with a female protagonist appealed to me, the problem is everyone keeps making out that the only reason to do this would be to "appease the PC crowd" which makes it impossible to even mention the possibility of a female protagonist without the discussion devolving into accusations of bigotry and pandering which is honestly just as bad as Feminists claiming that every game that features a male protagonist is sexist.

I'm fairly neutral and ambiguous about a female Link. On the one hand, I have nothing against it, it could be an interesting avenue to explore and it's not like it would hurt anyone or anything. If you don't want to play it, then don't. I'm sure there are people who would be curious/want to play a female Link.

I personally don't feel it would a great use of creative energy to make Link female (unless they did a game involving a Female Link/Zelda romance, that I fully support :P ) since the gender of Link really isn't a big part of the character nor is it that significant, in some ways Link is almost androgynous, I mean honestly when I play any Zelda game half the time I forget that Link is technically a dude. From that perspective, there wouldn't seem to be any major gain in making Link female. Why not create an entirely different protagonist in the same universe maybe? And that character could be female. Or simply focus on creating an entirely new and original character in an entirely new series, in my opinion there would be more creativity and sense (and fun) in doing either of those things than simply changing the gender of an already existing character in which the gender is barely more than a side-effect of Link. It could arguably be seen as artistic laziness, it really depends on the hypothetical game itself.

However, I wouldn't go so far as to say I am completely against the idea of a Female Link altogether nor would I necessarily not support it if it came to pass. I may not see the point in changing an existing characters gender when one could create an entirely new being instead, but I'm certainly not against changing the genders of characters in existing universes altogether, as I intimated above it would really depend on the entirety of the game, maybe the changed gender will genuinely bring something new and exciting about. Or it could not.

I won't give a more definitive one or the other opinion until this hypothetical game comes to pass and I actually try it, hell, for all I know I mind end up enjoying playing as a Female Link. Won't knock it 'till I try it :)

I don't believe that's what people are saying. It's the idea of changing an established character to a different gender which reeks of catering to political correctness -- I recall plenty of people in this thread saying "Why not an original character in the same universe and or a game featuring Zelda as the lead?" (even though Tetra owns Zelda in every single way possible mind you).

But it's not about gender at all. It's about the character. They don't want change to one of the most iconic video game characters. Female Link isn't going to happen. Now if Zelda/Sheik were playable in a LoZ game then ya damn right I'd jump on it.

And not all the comments that oppose female Link are serious, but just pure humor.

To be fair, you were the first person to bring up the terms bigotry, feminists and misogyny. Whether you were joking or not, it's irrelevant now since that seems to be the issue.

You've had people disagree with you, showing their perspective on the matter but all you keep doing is pushing it and attempting to come up with points to make.

I can see how it would be appealing, but it'd just feel weird playing Link as a lady and even Ganondorf as a female. *cringes*

Link could never be a lady. She kicks in too many doors and robs too many poor people.

Actually instead of discussing gaming misogyny, we need to open this discussion to cover the continuing persecution and oppression of non-PC characters in video games.

I initially brought it up to say that this is not what this thread is about and that I don't support just gender swapping established male characters willy-nilly saying that Lady Thor was a bad idea, if I hadn't had brought it up then the thread would probably have devolved down this path anyway and I hoped by getting it out of the way early we could focus on the topic at hand, unfortunately I was wrong.

As for people disagreeing with me and me disagreeing with them in turn that is sometimes how a discussion works, sometimes you have to defend the points you make and question points other people make, does not mean I am having a go at people or calling them misogynistic scum for disagreeing with me, I am merely discussing the topic. There is nothing wrong with questioning other peoples points of view so long as you remain civil about it and don't resolve to mudslinging.

Then what exactly is the deal with making posts like this?

Lets be honest here, everyone who votes for any of the last 3 options is a misogynistic shitlord, the person who voted 5 is merely being honest about it.

So you admit you've been trolling. Well, good to get that cleared up then, so why did you think that would provoke a serious discussion? On this forum of all places even. You claim that you would like to see a female protagonist equivalent to that of Link, but the poll says the opposite, phrasing it as "by turning an iconic character" implying a different agenda altogether.
