Now that we know Flemeth is the vessel of Mythal, I just had this awesome epiphany when replaying DAO the other day.

The description of the grimoire reads, "An old, but lovingly cared for book, bound in leather of questionable origins. The pages smell of herbs and wood smoke. Intricate stitching on the cover marks out a leafless tree, strangely ominous in its stark appearance."

And that leafless tree is in fact the symbol/icon/sigil/emblem/whatever of Mythal (check out the Dalish tattoo designs for Mythal if you like). So I was a little mind-blown at the time, and I thought it would be fun to share.

I'd forgotten all about that grimoire. Thanks for sharing that detail!

No problem. Although it does make me think however, just how many more such hidden gems lie within DAO, the game published in 2009.

I thought it's the inquisition spoiler.

Just curious as to how most of you deal with this personal quest (particularly if you know of what happens in DAI)?

There are two things that make me reluctant to send a Morrigan-less team to kill Flemeth.  First, Flemeth is the one who saves your PC and Allistair from certain death at Ostagar.  It seems rather ungrateful to go kill her without further investigating what's in the Grimoire and talking to Flemeth about the contents.

Second, of course, is seeing Flemeth in DAI and hearing what she has to say in her last words to Morrigan and coming to the conclusion that what was in the Grimoire isn't as sinister as what Morrigan assumes in DAO.

Thoughts?

It varied for me depending on my RP.  If my warden was a templar "kill all apostates" type, or was particularly friendly to Morrigan, I was more inclined to fight her.  It's a fun, tough battle and she seems to take it all in stride (since she has an out anyway).  If my warden was more sneaky and/or didn't particularly care for Morrigan, or even, as you point out felt obligated to Flemeth for saving the warden's and Alistair's lives, I bargained for the book and let her live (even Morrigan says she won't stay dead--it's a temporary measure at best).

I always liked Flemeth so I never killed her. I think I only did once in one play through just to see what would happen, but she's left alive almost always. After DA2 and DAI, I'm glad, because I don't think she's as sinister or evil as she is made out to be. But from a roleplay perspective, you've got to go on what your Warden knows and thinks. My canon Warden was Amell, so as a mage, she didn't fear her as much and knew things might not be as they appeared.

Morrigan knew she was wrong about her mother in witch hunt after you follow her to the eluvian,

As for killing her, i did kill her for the sake of Morrigan and because i always take a chance to prove my strength and i don't like an npc being more knowledgeable than me and acting high and mighty.

Thanks all.  Good to know there are other options aside from killing Flemeth.  I appreciate the need to role-play based on what you know, but even without the advanced knowledge of DAI, it doesn't seem right to just kill her without investigating things further.  I suppose if my PC were in a relationship with Morrigan, I might feel compelled to go for the kill.  But I don't see that happening regardless of whether I play as male or female.  The best party banter usually involves Morrigan, but as a person, she's really rather annoying.

Is there ever any explanation as to how the Circle got a hold of Flemeth's Grimoire in the first place?  She was never a Circle Mage was she?

I think Morrigan just says something like it was taken by templars some time ago.

Good catch on the cover thing, OP.

My Warden who was in love with Morrigan killed Flemeth to keep her safe, right or wrong.

But I did investigate what the grimoire was and what Flemeth's intentions were. She was evasive, which led me to believe that what Morrigan said was true. Flemeth had her chance to tell my Hero what the real story was. She didn't. So she was dealt with.

My male human noble warrior rationalized it this way: Yes Flemeth saved them from Ostagar, but their repayment for that was taking Morrigan with them, as Flemeth even states. Therefore that debt is repaid. Next, the main issue here is if Flemeth will possess Morrigan or not. Upon questioning Flemeth acts evasive and will not deny that she intends to take over Morrigan. Instead she tries to offer a deal, which is to give Morrigan the true grimoire and lie to her that she has been slain.

This sent up warning flags to my Hero right away. If Flemeth is not offering any explanation, not answering questions, and is suggesting that Morrigan should be deceived into thinking she's dead, then based on all that the most likely reason is because Flemeth really does intend to possess Morrigan. In which case, she must be stopped. My Hero considered Morrigan to be a friend.

As for my male human mage, he had romanced Morrigan, and so he considered Morrigan to be his. But, even so, he went to Flemeth with no real intention to kill her without a good enough reason. He may have even accepted her proposal to let her go and just lie to Morrigan, which he had done to Morrigan plenty of times already. The kicker here was that my mage told Flemeth that he would take the grimoire for himself! Flemeth seemed impressed, but said that he would have to earn the power he would gain, and she attacked him. Which of course left him with no choice but to take her down.
